Solo?

Post by Sanzo84 » Sun Mar 30, 2008 12:40 am

Hey all.

So I read that FoG can be played solo according to this: http://www.fieldofglory.com/introduction.html Has anyone tried it, not to test the rules with small training scenarios but an actual battle? What was it like?

I played a solitaire game using the model Roman and Carthaginian lists from the rulebook. While any solitaire game requires a certain amount of schizophrenia  , the mechanics for CMT and other variables make for a pretty good solo game. I suspect that an army of primarily undrilled troops will make a better 'automatic' opponent than, say, Romans, who don't have to take many CMT's. Two undrilled armies would quite fun, I think.

To reduce the effect of unconscious favoritism, I'll draw up three battle plans for each side, and choose randomly.

I have played several solo games (3 I think) while I was learning the rules. I have saeveral pretty simple Biblical armies which each have their own personality, and I play them against one another to get a feel for each of the new rules sets I try out. Nice way to compare the feel of the different rules, and get to learn the mechanics at the same time.

FoG works OK solo, though I found working out the complex combats between several units a challenge until I got a feel for the rules. IMHO a better solo game than DBM.

I played a few solo games myself to learn the rules and I think FOG lends itself well to this. Of course it's not as much fun as playing against live opponents, but when you are in a place with almost no players like mine... it goes a long way towards quenching the thirst of playing :D

Thanks for the replies. I asked because from what I know there are players within driving distance from where I live but none in the immediate area. I'd like to test out the rules and eventually try different tactics and see what works in between games with other players.
