If you let people know your army composition and what tactics you are trying they might be able to help.

i've tried all infantry armies, heavy, skirkishers, light and all mixed up as well as infantry and cavalry mixes. have even had a unit of elephants and whilst i've been close to routing them they always inflict the casualties needed for me to lose.

what have others done to beat this scenario.

You may need to buy equipment and go with a smaller number of well equipped squads. Keep your weaker squads out of combat. This way you'll take less casualties. Elephants are also good for this as they are tough to kill.

hi, most of these units are level 15+ some are over level 20.

they are tooled up and anti cav and anti infantry specialists as well as some being masters at them, but still cannot beat the scenario whatever i do and whereever i start from or change in formations.

is there a way to skip battles?

There is no way (I know of) to skip battles, but you could always step down and fight one on Normal to get past it. However, I am amazed that you got to this point, and suddenly can't win. THis battle is only medium difficulty with my army.

I line up:
Legate - 20
Principe - 18,17,16
Hastati - 16
Spearmen - 20
Velites - 19,19
Skirms - 19,19
Aux. Cav - 14
Nobles - 18
something like this:

________Sp L N AC
______P V
____P V
__P Sk
H Sk

in the lower right, with cavalry and Spearmen in Offensive Disciplined, missilers in Offensive, everyone else in Balanced-Disciplined. All on short hold except cavalry on a forward move. Target missilers on heavies in stead of lights, use the AC to run down the enemy skrims wwhen they appear ouf ot the forest and then turn on the main slave force. If you do it right, you won't have a single unit rout, and should be able to keep your casualties to 50-odd, even on Very Hard.

(The under-scores are placeholders, as spaces get compressed.)
"Even on the attack, the spade is the equal of the rifle." Erwin Rommel
Caesar & "Marius' Mules" would agree.
