Error loading MP turn of Edgehill Scenario in the original P&S

I'm getting the following error and CTD when I try to load this game versus smjohnso77. Note this is with the original Pike & Shot (not the Campaigns version)

Interestingly the Edgehill scenario loads fine in single player.

I'll check with my opponent in case he is using mods or something but this is a stock scenario.

I've verified the game data in steam successfully.

Looks like the data may have become corrupted. I fear you will have to abandon this instance.

We've now got another challenge working. So as you say likely just corrupted data. Just reporting the error as the error said to report it.

seems like the other challenge which loaded fine once is now exhibiting the exact same issue. How odd.

I don't think that P&S has migrated to PBEM3, but I will check. If so, it might be something to do with the new code.

It seems that P&S has been migrated to PBEM3. So, please report any other MP issues as they arise.

So interestingly if I try to launch the game from the game files folder directly (it is the steam version of the original P&S). I get a Steam Startup Error (0) followed by the same Unhandled Exception! (Same ExpCode and ExpAddress as the error I get when I run the game via steam but get to the main menu and into the MP UI then try to load either of the two Edgehill turns and it CTDs......with the campaign string error first and then the same fatal application exit error.)

I started a new challenge with a entirely different scenario to see if the issue happens again with it or not.

As far as I remember in the past I think the autorun and executable ran fine from the game folder even without steam open....I thought it odd that fatal application exit error is the same as when loading the MP turns for the two Edgehill challenges.

probably down to the steam version not wanting to launch without steam (I tested with the campaigns version clicking on its autorun and it does open steam up and launch without the error so it seems to be a issue that I've seen only with the original P&S).

I tested making another game (Bosworth) in the original pike and shot (steam version)....it lets me do the force selection/deployment but when the turn comes back to me and I try to load it I'm getting the same error. Therefore, it doesn't appear to be scenario specific.

verifying the game data in steam also doesn't seem to resolve it.

It's odd....perhaps a complete reinstall is in order.

Everything else works fine on the singleplayer end of things and the game launches successfully via steam....it only CTDs on attempting to load the PBEM++ turns.......it logs in to the MP interface fine.

I guess the work around is just to play MP on the Campaigns version of the game. But still odd that the original is exhibiting this error for me when trying to load MP turns.

***See subsequent post maybe the issue is only with the games in the original P&S versus smjohnso77...but I don't have another person to test this theory with right atm.***

It never did so in the past. Maybe it's something wacky on my end or my opponent's end (corrupt game data? IDK) but it seems strange the the CTD seems to only effect the MP part of the original game. Wonder if any others have had the issue?

Interestingly, I just tried creating and accepting my own challenge (original P&S steam version) using the Falkirk custom scenario....and can play turns versus myself (loading them up for both sides) without any issues. I got up through English turn 4 or so.

I wonder if my opponent smjohnso77 may have some sort of mod that changes the information in the game turn that gets sent back to me or if there is some other issue that causes the error on loading the games with him but not when I setup a challenge that I accept and play against myself.

If anyone else has the original game installed maybe I could run a test challenge with you to try to isolate if this is just a issue with my games versus smjohnso77 on the original P&S or not.

It may be due to the move to PBEM3. I would be very interested to know if it also affects Pike and Shot: Campaigns.

Sorry for not writing back sooner. But here's a bit more information to add to the puzzle. I believe the root cause might be due to the fact that my opponent was utilizing the iPad version of the original Pike and Shot to do his turns. I'm not sure how the mobile and PC versions update wise compare but perhaps there are some differences between the two versions of the game (PC and Mobile) possibly also effected by updates to the PBEM system that have resulted in a campaign string / game data file being changed or missing in the turns my opponent sent back resulting in the CTD error here.

I didn't realize my opponent was using the mobile version until I explicitly asked so its certainly possible that this could be a contributing factor to this error.

AKA Probably, unfixable if fixing would require mucking with the now unsupported mobile version of the original game.

I don't think this issue effects P&S:Campaigns at all.
