Thoughts on Morale

Post by Kerensky » Mon Nov 17, 2014 1:28 am

How are people finding the Morale mechanic? Personally, I find it takes far too many 'rest' actions to bring a unit out of Red status. Scenario lengths range from 12 turns to 25 turns. It's on the 12 turn scenarios that you really feel the pain of not having an ability to rest 4 times to go from Red all the way back to White. Perhaps 2 morale levels recovered per rest action?

Yes, it does seem to be a long slog to get back in fighting form. That said, it also is not obvious what low moral is doing. If there was a way to indicate what affect the lower moral is having on the unit, that would be really good. Not sure how to show the effects however. I think it is a good idea to have in the game, but not doing too much right now.

Is there a way for Moral to reduce the movement range of the unit? That would help too.

Thanks,
Duncan

too long for me also, but as tanks don't seem to need it as much as infantry unit types do, atm with what i play like it's not top on my list for fixes either, but understand your concern on the matter and agree...

I didn't have a problem with moral until deeper into the campaign. Then it was slowing me down. If an infantry unit gets hit by artillery, forget it. It take way too long.

There's morale in the game???

Seriously. Sure, I've seen the coloured bar, but the game is so easy that I'm yet to actually see any effect on the unit that has poor morale. This really needs explaining in game and if you want morale to be an important thing it needs to do more than simply decrease effectiveness by X. Routing units and leadership is huge in 40k - why isn't this in the game?

i did wonder what those bar where also for, but tbh never bothered with it, as it didn't seem to do much, other than alter colour, it never stops you moving or firing so didn't really think of it, mind you only finished act 2 and 3, so might look more on act 1 today and see if it's even working for myself

I too think morale should have its effect better documented, and maybe increased, while recovering should be more efficient.
Morale could reduce movement(pinning) for instance. It seems to make quite a difference on return fire taken, but it is hard to tell without more Info.

Concerning morale, that is another reason why I am not using cheap units such as standard infantry. They will have a lot of losses, and thus loose moral a lot. As a result, for a low end unit, you have to buy new losses (1 turn), wait 2-3 turns to replenish moral for every 1-2 turn you are attacking. As a result, it is pretty useless to use such units late in the campaign. That is a shame.

I don't know how morale works, but one rule should be that if you inflict more losses that you get, you should have a morale increase.

I find it weird that artillery shelling an opponent that cannot fight back loses morale. The effect seems strong enough :
Command squad assaulting command squad in the open :
Normal vs normal : 11 casualties for both defender and attacker
Normal vs broken: 4 casualties for attacker, 13 for defender.
Shooting range 1, cas goes from 7-7 to 3-7

apart from them to take objectives, i see little use for them even in the game, yes they look nice, but don;t live long enough to be of any use, and no i don't or haven't hardly used them either...

What I´d don´t like is that units that are in the thick of it, lose Morale at quite a rapid rate even if they are doing very well and inflict much more losses than they suffer. Basically for every hit you take you lose Morale, but there´s no counterweight, no morale boost, for "winning".

And as kind of a 40k lore buff I gotta say it does not make a whole lot of sense for Space Marine units to be affected by morale.
In Novels and other written lore pieces Space Marines are fearless. The notion of a Space Marine fighting worse because of emotions does not fit with the lore at all.
You also have the Death Company in the game (also affected by morale), these guys are no longer sane and have lost all thaught for self preservation.
Both is represented in the table top aswell, albeit in a bit of a "gamey" way.

Maybe I just misunderstand what "Morale" is to represent in this game.

^ Since that is true, maybe we should call it organization. Where you loose the ability to strike back.

I like the idea of increasing moral a little for each hit given the enemy. It would be kool to get your moral over 100% for a few turns from long range attacks.

What does everyone think about calling it organization?

sounds good to me, but a per hit thing doesn't, a per damage one sounds better...

or you will have morale jumped up crazies firing at everything that moves but causing no or little damage what so ever, and there is atm no concept of ammo already used in the game, so that would make it worse as well tbh....

no point saying a unit has 5 shots for a weapon if it fires 20+ in a battle without running out or rearming, an over sight maybe, but something else that does feel and play 100% right, right from day 1...

then again it may just be me, as i seem to be talking to myself in most threads anyway, so goes off and plays in the corner__________________________>

Hmm, well I don't know that I like Organization any better, but on the other hand since it does not work as much like Morale in 40K TT, a change of name is needed.

Combat Readiness?
Initiative? (Already used right?)
Effectiveness?

Just some ideas.

thanks,
