STICKY UPDATE: A REQUEST FOR PHOTOS

hey guys, i need certain pictures of specific angles of the models of units i'm making. this list of of request of photos will be updated over time as i receive photos from you guys.

for now just 1 unit on the list: harridan.

i need a north facing picture for harridan. north west or north east doesn't matter. on the other hand if you are sending me pictures, might as well send me the angle of south west/east facing picture too, for the sake of color consistency. so 2 pictures in all. 1 north east/west facing, 1 south east/west facing.

requirements for pictures: do not post pictures on this forum, there is image upload limit of 256k, which is too small for use in this project. i need at least resolution 600 by 600 pictures. the higher the rez the better. send me the photos by pm. also minimize the glare in the photo as much as possible. last thing, as for the army paint color, kraken scheme is the best, but if you don't have kraken, leviathan or any other colors will do . i will do a simple recolor. so preferably kraken, then leviathan, then any other colors.

alternatively, if you see a north west/east facing harridan model picture on the internet, feel free to point me to that direction.

UPDATE 6:

7th pack is all done !!
:D in this pack there are 3 new units and 5 reworked old units: harridan, mawloc, mucolid spore cluster are the new ones, flying tyrant, exocrine, tyrannofex, toxicrene and venomthrope are the old units. SPECIAL TREAT: toxicrene now has 6 directional facings as opposed to the usual 4!! see updated screenshots below showing the units.

finally all tyranids unit graphics are done!! :D however i have removed the download link, because the complete nids army addon mod has just been released ( v1.03a ), you can simply download that instead.

old updates:

6th pack released

in this pack there are 6 new finished units: hierodule, shrikes, skyslashers, genestealer cult/hybrids, dimachaeron and genestealer broodlord.

5th pack released

in this pack there are 6 new finished units: maleceptor ( another new unit from 7th edition codex ) , harpy , hive crone, haruspex, pyrovore and ripper swarm with directional facings.

4th pack released

in this pack there are 6 new finished units: tyrannocyte ( nids droppod/close air support) , toxicrene ( both these 2 units are new units from 7th edition codex ) , biovore, trygon, venomthrope and hive guard with directional facings.

3rd pack released.

in this pack there are 6 new finished units: tervigon, tyrannofex, exocrine, flying hive tyrant, gargoyles, and hierophant ( bio titan ) with directional facings. special treat: tervigon has 6 directional facings as opposed to the regular 4 facings in other units!

special note: in first 2 packs, i have used up all models in relic's dawn of war 2, so starting from this third pack, all source materials are pictures of painted models from the internet. ( google image ) so from now on, all source material credit go to the people on the internet who posted pictures of their beautifully painted models. i have updated note number 2 regarding credit.

second pack released.

in this second pack there are 6 new finished units: swarmlord, lictor, ravener, tyrant guard, genestealer, spore mine with directional facings.

first pack released.

this first pack contains 6 finished tyranids units graphics with directional facings. hive tyrant, carnifex, warrior, zoanthrope, termagaunt and hormagaunt.

you guys feel free to use this pack into any mods of any kind ( non profit ). no need to ask permission. :)

a few notes:
1. i did the 2D conversion myself, but for the first 2 packs, the art credit goes to relic, since the models are from dawn of war 2, i simply took high res screenshots of the units in that game and then converted them. starting from pack 3, source material credit go to the people on the internet who posted pictures of their beautifully painted models.

2. i did 4 directional facings instead of the default 6. ( exception is tervigon, which has 6 facings ) i use the west facing sprite for both west facing and south west facing, same with east side. reason being that aside from save me 1/3 of the workload, it doesn't really break immersion at all in game. now north east and north west facing need to be made separately because the units backs are facing you, no way around that. so i made them. my files are named based on directional facing. there are 4 of them in each unit folder. for example warrior e final.png, warrior w final.png, warrior ne final.png, warrior nw final.png.

do you mean unit shadow? shadow is already in this for every unit. it might not be very obvious on first glance for some units, but its there. these screenshots are too small for my liking due to pic upload size restriction lol.

btw lictor was done yesterday, working on swarmlord now :)

Hey, great work! Damn, I have to do more with the Tau... so much to do and so little time.

Are you using photoshop? You could apply some filters to let the units look more like rendered. And like my red lasers mod - you can easily change the colour of every shot-animation to any colour you like (green). I can give you some more details if you like.

After having a closer look - they actually look fairly good and rendered right now (coming from DoW, they have to :)), a little too bright and colourfull maybe (which is great imho, but the tone of the game is darker, so they look slightly not fitting).

Edit: "Why are there just four of the six directions?" - never mind, should have red your post more carefully ;)

yes really looking forward to your tau units. can't wait to play with tyranids against tau, the melee focused race against ranged focused race, gonna be fun ! :)


no , i use paint.net. it's a pretty awesome and feature rich program.


in terms of being a bit too bright and colorful, well, this is the color relic used , so not something i can easily change. as for army paint job. originally i was debating between using kraken ( the current red paint job you see now ) and leviathan ( dark purple ). both are great. but the problem with leviathan is that units simply blend in with the background terrain environment in cities, becomes kind of a mess. ( i tested it ) while the kraken's red stands out and is easily recognized in all terrain. besides, if i have to choose one over another between these 2 colors, i would pick kraken anyway because it fits with biological nature of tyranids better i think.

in terms of lore, even though leviathan invasion is currently on going, it MIGHT get completely defeated in the future like hive fleet behemoth. kraken on the other hand, technically they haven't been truly defeated because they still have lots of splinter fleets all over the place. so if you guys use them in various future scenarios, it's not exactly lore breaking.

i think next pack will be the last pack ( pack 5). pack 5 is half done. :) it will roughly have 6-7 units, which brings the total unit number to 30-31 UNIQUE units. that pretty much covers everything in the nids army. with 30-31 unique units, we can make the nids army to have at least 40-50 units, because some units can have different weapon loadouts. btw i won't be making separate sprites for different weapon loadouts of the same units, that's too much work. sorry :(

there are some obscure units i won't be making such as harridan which is basically a large carrier for gargoyles, no point in putting those units in.

one more thing, after pack 5 release, i will make 1 more update to redo some of the old units in previous packs. i am not very happy with some of the old units in previous packs for various reasons, could be source picture low rez quality, or angle or whatever.
