Sorry that is not a fact it is fiction.... by R F Delderfield (and set in the 19th Century not the 16th).
And one of my favourite novels. As is R F Delderfield's '7 men from Gascony' about a group of soldiers in Napoleon's army.

I have never read any of his books but growing up in the UK in the late seventies and early eighties I am familiar with his work as TV producers were keen to adapt his work for TV, "To serve Them all my Days" and " A Horseman Riding By" being just two. On the basis of your recommendation I shall look out for "7 Men From Gascony". Thanks.

Round 3 Result Win for the Scots
KiwiWarlord ( Scots ) 2% Doyley50 ( English ) 46%

Plenty of action from start to finish, the Highlanders cleared the woods on the last move of the game, Scottish Pikes were catching engaged English Light Horse and giving them a good old 'punch up the Khyber' but the main action between the line of English Keils and the Scottish Keils saw the demise of the English as the English Foot crumbled under the Scots Pike.
Doyley played well but I managed to counter all his thrusts around both Scottish Flanks which allowed the Scottish Pikes a trouble free approach into the English.

I have had "Seven Men from Gascony" in my bookcase for decades and I have read and reread it many times. Another good yarn is "Too Few for Drums" set in the Peninsular War and Imperial Sunset is non fiction, a military history of the events after the retreat from Moscow to the end in 1814. All good stuff.

Regarding my battle with KiwiLord, his account sums it up well. I was absolutely thrashed. The Scottish Pikes were unstoppable and my English foot just melted away under their onslaught and all my attempts to gain an advantage on the flanks came to naught. Well played KiwiLord.

SnuggleBunnies (Scottish) defeats Kerry D (English) 41-13

The Scots held off the English cavalry on the right, drove them off on the left, and barreled forward to push of pike in the open ground in the center, shrugging off a shower of arrows and arquebus shot on their way in.

GG, a real tough match for the English.

Round 3 results:

Scots (Lascar) 9% defeat English (Warrior230) 46%

This English army of foot and mediocre cavalry seems to be seriously over-matched by the massive Scot pike formations
and the nimble Highlanders. The limited numbers of medium and light cavalry the Scots brought to the battlefield were adequate for
countering the mediocre English cavalry.

Warrior230 did the best he could with the under performing English formations.

The English army needs a major reform if they hope to defeat the Scots in the future.

A victory for the English having lost 45% to Peter the Painter's 61%.

The battlefield had a river running from left to right through the centre of it, with forests to my left and hills on his side and a small hill to the right of my deployment zone. My entire army moved to the right and I moved my only gun battery onto the hill. I managed to form a crescent with him advancing into it with extra pike and highlanders outflanking my left. Our shooting disordered a couple of his pike and then fragged and broke them as they crossed the river. We won the cavalry battle on our right and then advanced into his rear, while our raw units and a few bows and cavalry held up his pikes and highlanders on our left.
It was a bitter struggle but with judicious rear charges and concentrated shooting we broke enough units to win the day.
Thanks for a most enjoyable game Peter.

Awesum and Peter, that sounds like a terrific game.

So we are just waiting for the results from the last two games before we move on. Can we try to wrap them up please in the next days?

Well done Chris (Snooky51), Scottish Pikemen prove once again that they can keep Scotland free of the dreaded Sassenachs !
Gribol, the Leader of this Sassenach incursion, is a formidable & very skilful Polish General with a much respected reputation so you have done well Snooky !

Mary Queen of Scots is most grateful.
