it seems that the target of fire was Oddball (a hero Sherman Tank)
In that case, Oddball has the "Positive Waves" ability. If you hit a tank with this ability, two damage markers are rolled and the tanks keeps the best one

This is handled automatically in the game, but a small window appears informing you that the ability "Positive Waves" has been activated
