"Special Equipment Items" and "Modding"!

I've spent most of today checking out two of the txt files in the data directory of the installed version of Legion Arena, Squads.txt and BonusDef.txt.

My primary purpose was to discover the details of the "Special Equipment Items". There would appear to be seven of them, each one costing 750 denari:-

01. Achilles' Armour=(Blessed Armour?)-Universal-Requires Grand Master Swords III
02. Ajax's Banner-Universal-Requires Master Endurance
03. Dacian Falx-Universal excludes Spearmen & Triarii-Requires Master Big Hit (Does anyone know what Big Hit is?)
04. Odysseus' Bow-Archers only-Requires Grand Master Marksman III
05. Sarissa-Spearmen & Triarii only-Requires Master Stand Firm
06. Sarmation Cavalry Armour-Legate, Auxiliary Cavalry & Nobles excludes Scouts-Requires Master Trample
07. Teutonic Horses-Legate & All Cavalry-Requires Grand Master Swords III

I'm assuming that WesternLC=Scouts and MasterRideThemDown=Master Trample?

There is also a file named Prizes.txt which contains such exotic items as, Berzerk, FightToDeath, Strength, Agility, Shield, TrueShot, Speed and Death. I'm assuming these become available at the higher levels of difficulty?

I should point out that I've copied all eleven of the "interesting" txt files into spreadsheets using Excel for easier analysis. Whilst I was checking out the "Specials" I carefully made notes as to which sections related to the relevant troop types. I've mentioned several times my desire to award the Auxilia with "extra pilum" and the "expert throwers" skill. Through the art of "Modding" I believe that this is now possible. If it is as simple as changing a couple of numbers in the txt files, then I will try it.

**Update**

It worked, I simply put the numbers 5 and 7 in the relevant slots and bingo, my Auxilia now have these two new bonuses. (5 and 7 relate to the promotion levels)

If you look at my research on the effects of the anti-skills you will see that modding is exactly what I did, and so far it has just been a change of numbers :P

Thanks for all the hard work. To find out what something is, just look up its bonus in "bonusdef." meaning that "bighit" = "Armour Penetration" because it give concuss bonus (I assume it is the only one to do so?).

I will keep this in mind, very useful. Good idea to use a spread sheet (i don't have Excel :( so I just make full use of the searcn option. I might, but I don;t think so :P and am to lazy to look for it).

The Prizes seem to have a god association, and would therefore be left over froma previous game? Or planned for a future one? It could also appear on harder difficulties.

And finaly, thank you slitherine for making such simple files (I have seen much, much worse).

"I think" Big Hit is Armor Penetration.

BTW there are animations labeled Ballista in data\Battle\units. Would be nice to have some artillery.

Anyway adding equipment and skills is easy. Just edit your Squads.txt and of course be sure to make a backup first.

Find the unit you want and scroll down to the bonus section. Each bonus is followed by a number that is the earliest level it's available at. Value of 100 means it's not available for that unit. Yes I tried it and yes it works. Now the big question can you get into multiplayer with an edited file?

I think 99 or 100 actually means that it would take 99 levels to get it, but there aren't even enough levels in between 1 and 98 for them to get to 99, so it the same thing..

Also, looking through the files, I believe many (including "Buildings" and "Experience") are left over from previous games.

Tried adding javelins to scouts but it crashes when they try to shoot. I just copied the data from skirmishers so I'm guessing missing animations. Hmmm, not finding an error or crash log, would make it easier to see what's going wrong.

Pip, ugly question, but...

Are there safeguards built in to the game to prevent people from cheating by editing data files?

I had an experience last week in an MP game that caused me to wonder about this.

Yes, if the data files were different you would go out of synch. It's possible to go out of synch without cheating, but you'll always go out of synch if you are cheating.

So if Data fdiles are uneditable (from an MP Perspective) what about Unit Skins....now afaik this shouldnt put the games out of sync as only one end of the network will be seeing them (yours) but before i go on a rampant skinning fest and redo all your units :wink: I would like to know for sure...
(this of ourse doesnt happen in any other game i know of, but its good to be safe)

Skins do not effect the game model so you can edit them & stay in synch.

Data files can be edited but both players must have exactly the same set of data. Be careful when making changes as you'll need a back up to revert to if you want to play anyone that doesn't have your changes.

Yeah, Slitherine is very good about responding. They don't always give the answer you were hoping to hear, but they do respond ;)

I think I figured out a way to bypass the out of sync thing while cheating.

Send me a PM if you want to test it.

Also, there appears to be a trainer hovering around for legion arena. Does anybody know what it does?

I had one unit equipped with Ajax's banner, but the name struck me as being way out of context, since we are dealing with Romans in LA and not Hellenes.

Also, the same applies to Sarissa Equipment, for Romans???!!!???

Is it possible to change the names of Ajax's Banner, Odysseus' Bow or whatever, ans Sarissa Equipment to appropriate Roman names?? These Greek names would have been good for Spartan and GoT, not LA.

Just wondering.

Is it possible to change the names of Ajax's Banner, Odysseus' Bow or whatever, ans Sarissa Equipment to appropriate Roman names?? These Greek names would have been good for Spartan and GoT, not LA.
Just wondering.

Roman names:

Ajax's Banner = Banner of Mars, Banner Martius, Banner Horatius, Aquila (correct?) or Legion Eagle, Signum Martius, etc.

Odysses' Bow = Lightning of Jupiter (since the Romans weren't that big on bows), or could keep this one since the Romans were familiar with the Illiad and Odysee (sp?)

Sarissa quipment = Hasta(e) Triarius

etc. Simple changes.
