Mines

Post by Vorskl »

hi Kerensky,
please elaborate on a few questions regarding mines:
- is there an opportunity to add functionality to DEPLOY the mines (just like it works in OOB)? In 1942 onwards, a player will play more and more defensive scenarios. The battles like Rzhev or anything 1944+ should rely heavily on mines. Ideally, we need bridge pioneers be able to deploy land mines and strategic bombers to deploy sea mines (very important for Crimea and Baltic scenarios + pretty much anything marine in WEST DLCs). We already have mine-deploying trucks in DLC 1940, just expand it to bridge pioneers.
- can we differentiate infantry and tank mines? just like AT has soft and hard support, these mines would be active against a particular player type.
- any plans to upgrade mines? If nothing else, Orenthal 1940 scenario shows that mines suck; however the northern face of the Kursk salient demonstrated that even massive 'Ferdinands' were destroyed easily.

(a totally separate question - how do I access the equipment file - want to check what Soviet equipment is there)
thanks

There comes a time on every project when it is time to shoot the engineer and ship the damn thing.

The mines in Orenthal do exactly what minefields are really supposed to do, though? They immensely bog down the French advance, as they have no engineers or other mine-clearing units. A minefield that is not covered by defenders is little more than an obstacle that attackers can overcome with little to no substantial losses beyond that of time. And that's entirely okay, because the very purpose of minefields is to act as barriers to enemy movement - actual kills are a nice bonus, but not the real goal of their deployment.

Ok, but a player should be able to deploy mines. Virtually any time Germans 'played' defense, they'll built serious defensive lines. For Soviet DLC, Kursk will require mines deployment.
And Luftwaffe marine mines are the prime reason Soviet Baltic Fleet sat idle at Leningrad and Sevastopol fallen (Black Sea fleet was devastated by mines and active bombing, hence supply of arty projectiles dwindled (at desperation, USSR used submarines to carry fuel into Sevastopol (!) ) , making its massive artillery useless).

I would also like the special function for engineers to lay mines. If the future DLC should show the historical truth, especially with stronger opponents, the new function could give more strategic depth to offer the opponent a little more resistance. In addition to laying mines, you could also add the function of building bunkers. That would be a good addition for that unit type next to finding and removing mines and attack/destroy bunkers in a good manner.
