Camo list

Post by Patrick Ward »

So its been asked that we supply a list of all the camo available in the base game and the General Edition.

Firstly a quick explanation of some of the complexities of camo....

A skin is a container for UPTO 4 different types of camo ( vehicles, aircraft, ships, Infantry (redundant) ). DEFAULT skins ( 3 per nation - summer, winter, desert ) include a representative camo for all vehicles, aircraft and ships. Each nation has at least 3 DEFAULT skins.
DEFAULT skins can be applied to ALL units on the map using the button in the top left of the panel and will affect vehicles, aircraft and ships.
Individually or descriptively named skins will only be applied to the currently selected vehicle.

The camo panel is always filtered by unit type. So if you have a tank selected, it will only show vehicle camo. If you have a plane selected, it will only show aircraft camo. Same with ships. These are all interchangeable within their given type. So any vehicle camo will work with any nations vehicle etc.
Infantry are the exception. Every infantry texture and camo assignment is already unique and many are not interchangable. Game play requirements meant that every infantry type had to have a unique camo assignment. Since it's near impossible to assign any kind of meaningful filtering to them you are left to pick what ever you want. Be aware that many just won't work. Try applying the Russian Navy uniform to Spanish Militia and you'll get odd results because the UV's don't match.
The reason you often see the same infantry camo colour/repeated is that the variation is in the fixed colour* texture. So all Commonwealth units used British uniforms ie. the same colour camo, but had unique insignia. The insignia is not part of the camo patch so isn't displayed. However the insignia is unique to a given model, so giving the British the Australian camo will not give them the Australian insignia.

  • Vehicles - 1 or 2 tiled camo patches over fixed colours* with ability to add dust, wear and tear, underpainting, bare metal, primer etc.. The second camo patch can be restricted to upper surfaces. Only applicable to ground based vehicles.
  • Aircraft - 1 or 2 tiled/UV based patch over fixed colours* with ability to add dust, wear and tear, underpainting, bare metal, primer etc ( fewer controls and so less resource hungry than vehicles). The secondary camo channel isn't currently used. Additional colour input for belly if required. Only applicable to Aircraft. - Note that as of the 1940 update we can now have bare metal skins. There's not many examples yet but later in the war there will be more.
  • Ships - 1 or 2 tiled/UV/colour based patch over fixed colours*. They can be given a single coloured patch ( eg- Italian ) a simple fixed pattern ( eg German ) or they can be given a variable camo pattern ( eg. British ). With the latter the V coordinate of the UV is shifted based on the starting coordinates of the model, so each ship uses the same patch but looks different. The dazzle camos are a good example of this. Only applicable to ships.
  • Infantry - 1 tiled/UV based patch over fixed colours*. Due to their size and shape every infantry model has to automatically have a unique camo pattern to aid differentiation. So each has a unique material and camo set. This is why the infantry camo list often looks to have duplicates as sometimes the difference might actually be in the fixed texture - eg. most commonwealth units wore the same British uniform, but had unique arm badges. Only applicable to Infantry.

Notes:
* Fixed colours are things like tank tracks, prop blades, machine guns, belts, webbing, insignia etc.. elements that didn't routinely get painted with camo paint. So these are unique and model specific ( UV based ), can not change and so can not be interchanged between one model and another
The editor is much more low level than the game and does not have the same level of filtering.
The first camo in the list is labeled as Default. This is just an ingame indication of the starting camo. To know if a skin is a DEFAULT type, hover your mouse and read the tool tip.

The Base Game

The base game includes all the standard, default textures required to play and help distinguish all the nations. However the player is free to use the camo of any other nation as their own.

The release of the 1942 DLC will add the following in the General Edition ( in the form of a free update)

Additional German - as per the notes in the post below, German vehicles should still mostly be plain Panzer Grey in 1942. The exception to this is field coverings of muddy patterns, and new vehicles sent to the South of Russia, which would of been painted in one of the Tropen schemes.
Dunkelgelb 7028 - one of many variations.
Dunkelgelb 7028 Ausgabe 1944 - Darker form seen in 1944.
Tropen I (a) - correct colours - Used in the Mediterannean and Southern Russia. Most of the new tanks sent to Stalingrad and the south would of been painted in Tropen I or II.
Tropen I (b) - scaled and sunbleached - at the games scale, true colours look too dark, plus some paints weren't as light fast as they should be.
Tropen II ( 521a) - seen on vehicles of the 521st - scaled colours
Tropen II ( 521b) - seen on vehicles of the 521st (Inc Dicker Max/Sturer Emil ) - scaled colours

Nightfighter 7 - Late war two tone with field applied black on undersides. Me410
Nightfighter 8 - Late war Liegeplatz-Tarnung - field applied dark green dispersal Camo seen on He219
Prototype Air - This was meant to represent the unpainted look of some German prototype aircraft but to do it right it needs to be unique for every model rather than a generic texture, so this looks more like bare metal.
White wash squiggle over two tone green ( no longer the winter Default ) - seen on some bombers and twin engine fighters.
White wash cells over two tone green - seen on some bombers
White wash wavy lines over grey/green base - seen in 1940-41 on single engine fighters.

Re: Camo list

Post by Patrick Ward »

So based on at least some comments .. that isn't enough  :D . (" an embarrassingly small number", "barren", "sad attempt" ) ok I get it. While more will get added with various DLC, if theres anything specific you'd like to see please drop a line here or better, given we're talking visuals, an image. Can't guarantee your request will make it in but we'll have a better idea of what you want/need/pine for.

And for those of you wanting to know when specific camo was introduced in order to edit your scenarios accordingly ..

I can't give you information for every nation .. not even most nations .. but I'll start with the first DLC and Spain being a small, localised conflict, I can provide all the aircraft quantities. But after that you'll have to do your own research.

The time between an order being given, and the camo being seen in the field can be from days to months. Normally, any vehicle leaving the factory once the order was issued, had to comply with that order, even if it delayed delivary. The strictness of this obviously reduced as the war progressed.

Camo was usually meant to be applied with a spray gun, but more often than not it was applied by brush, rag or floor brush.

Spain - Condor Legion

Spain was a period of transition and experimentation for camo and unit markings. Far too much happened with markings to cover here in any sensible way but camo is fairly well deliniated. ( Staffel = 10-13 planes )

August(ish) 1936 - 6xHe51, 20xJu52 bombers are sent painted in pale green-grey ( close to RLM 63 )

Late 1936 - 3 Staffel of Ju52 Bomber arrive painted pale green-grey.
- 3 Staffel He51 - pale green-grey.
- 18xHe70 - pale green-grey.
- 6xHe45 arrive - pale green-grey.
- 10xHe 59 arrive- in dark green-grey
(until about spring 1937, some He45s and 51s were seen to have dark brown sprayed over the pale green-grey in the field. Others had brown painted over dark green)
Nationalist insignia of black circle, and white tail with black cross introduced.
Condor Legion gets a second circle on upper wings to aid recognition of He 45, 51 and 59.
It doesn't work so additional white wing tips added to all Condor units, and full wing width white crosses added to biplanes He 45, 51 and 59. Other aircraft get a white cross added to the black discs instead.
- 3xBf109B prototypes tested in Spain - pale green-grey camo.

Dec 1936 - 5xHs123 - splinter camo - Dark Brown, Dark Green, Pale Green-Grey, over Blue-Grey undersurface. (RLM 61,62,63 over 65 the standard for German bombers at the time and strictly defined with 2 mirrored patterns of 3 colour swapped variations of each ). White wingtips and wing cross and standard Nationalist markings.

Over the next few months, Hs123 replacements and some new aircraft were sent with this new splinter camo scheme.

Feb 1937 - 1 Staffel of He111B - pale Green/grey. White wing tips, and tail with cross, white cross in black circle. ( now the standard for all CL monoplanes )
- 1 Staffel of He111B - splinter camo. Standard markings.

April 1937 - 15 Do17Fs - splinter camo + standard markings
- 30xBf109B - pale green-grey. Some later repainted either dark brown or dark green. Some with green fuselage and brown upper wings and other combinations. Standard monoplane markings except the white cross on black circle was smaller than on other planes

September 1937 - 5xJu86 - splinter camo, standard markings.
- 3xJu87A - splinter camo

October 1937 - 3xJu87B, 6xHs126 ( to replace He45s) - new continental fighter camo - dark green/black green over blue-grey ( RLM 70,71 over 65 ) this stays in use until early 1940 and in these early years it is broght right down the side of the fuselage - (the two greens represent the light and shadow areas of coniferous trees and there are two mirrored variations of the official, factory applied pattern). - standard monoplane markings
Continental camo for naval and marine operations was RLM 72/73/65

November 1937 - 10xDo17Ps - continental camo - standard monoplane markings

Luftwaffe 1938 +
The Continental fighter camo was adopted by all aircraft during 1938 and the red tail band of the swastika was removed.
Few remaining Ar 68E - repainted from RLM 61,62,63,65 to RLM 70, 71, 65

August 1938
- defensive requirements result in Balkenkreuz being reduced in size so they didn't compromise the camouflage.
- all aircraft leaving Spain have their white identification colours and Nationallist markings removed and German Balkenkreuz and Hakenkreuz added.

Spring 1939 - letter codes styles, that had gone through multiple iterations to this point, are finalised, and changed little from then on.

August 1939 - Poland - Balkenkreuz are repositioned and painted larger for quicker recognition.
- Ju52s and some converted bombers used as air ambulances - early Spanish 4 colour splinter camo + red cross insignia. Undersurface sometimes painted black.
- some Do17Fs from Spain still seen with splinter camo.
- 37xHs123 available in Poland, all with splinter camo.
- 60xBf110 available for Poland, all in 70/71/65 continental camo.

Late 1939 - some crews of Bf109s replace one of the two greens with RLM 02 Grey. This started as a field experiment but quickly spread throughout the Gruppen and by late 1940 was common for single and twin engine fighters but never officially adopted.

Winter 1939-40 - some Bf109B, C and Ds and the last few Ar68s seconded for night interception. Some given temporary black paint.

10th May 1940
- the demarcation line between the two tone green and the pale blue underside is raised so the side of aircraft is almost entirely blue. This was to provide better air to air camouflage. In practice, this change took several months.

By June 1940 - no more examples of the 4 colour Spanish splinter pattern were in service.

Wehrmacht

Between 1927 and 1937, German armour was painted in a 3 colour Buntfarbenanstrich camo - Yellow/brown, brown and green. colours to be applied in a wavey pattern with soft edges or borderd by a 1-3cm black line

12th July 1937 - German vehicles were to be painted a base of Dark Grey ( No. 46 ) with a 1/3 feathered covering of Dark Brown ( No. 45 ) once the early three colour camo is sufficiently worn out. So in the early months of the Spanish Civil War, many vehicles were not immediatly repainted so appeared in their original 3 colour camo.

2 November 1938 - All units had to immediatly repaint vehicles to the dark grey / dark brown scheme and must start sourcing their own paints directly from the factories.

Jan 1939 - all combat vehicles were painted Dark Grey with 1/3 Dark Brown overspray. Non-combat were to be painted Dark Grey

Poland/Czechoslovakia - all German vehicles were by this time Dark Grey with 1/3 Dark Brown overspray. Balkenkreuz design varied greatly, ranging from simple, crude white crosses, bright yellow smaller crosses, to simplified versions of what would later become the standard Balkenkreuz.

June 1940 - units were to stop sourcing their own paint and instead it was to be issued. At this time only Dark Grey was issued.

31st July 1940 - All German vehicles to be painted Dark Grey ( RAL 7021 ). This happened gradually over many months.

Vehicles first arriving in North Africa were often given a spray of Gelbbraun over their dark grey base, and sometimes painted with requisitioned Italian paints. The abrasion of the sand often wore this off.

17 March 1941 - Equipment in North Africa and those destined for Southern Europe, should be painted two-thirds yellow-brown ( RAL 8000 gelbbraun) and one-third feathered gray-green (RAL 7008 graugrün). Referred to as Tropen I.

November 1941 - Norway, Finland, and Russia - vehicles are provided with removable, white camouflage paint. Due to limited paint stocks, this was often limited to metal surfaces of combat vehicles only.

( Historical photos and documents suggest that Tigers sent to Leningrad with Schwere Panzerabteilung 502 in early 1942 were still painted dark grey. Five that were diverted to Rostov were likewise grey. But the rest of the Tigers deployed in 1941-1942 were painted in Tropen I. Of the 1350 Tigers built, only about 25 were grey )

25 March 1942 - yellow-brown and gray-green were to be replaced by brown (RAL 8020 braun) and gray (RAL 7027 grau) once existing paint is depleted, using the same pattern ratio. ( winter camo is now allowed on canvas/tarpaulin ). Referred to as Tropen II. The Marders of Pz.J.Abt 561 were notable examples as was likely the single Dicker Max at Stalingrad.

Feb 1943 - All German vehicles to be painted with a base of dark yellow ( RAL 7028 Dunkelgelb ), with stripes of Redbrown ( RAL 8017) and Green ( RAL 6003 ) added in the field.
The actual tones of these colours, especially Dunkelgelb, varied as the war progressed, sometimes getting lighter, sometimes darker, and we don't cover all of them in-game as they're too subtle at our scale. The naming we've given them suggests it got lighter with time, this isn't neccessarily true but fits the conceit of the game.

19 August 1944 - all vehicles to be painted at the factory in Ambush camouflage. The pattern varied from factory to factory and there are examples of it being applied in the field, but was dominated by MAN/MNH and Daimler Benz.
Daimler Benz used dark brown and green overyellow with vary spots of both colours overlaying each.
MAN/MNH and Skoda produced variations on disc patterns.

Sept 1944 -vehicles ordered to leave factories in red oxide primer with a pattern of dark yellow and/or olive green applied 'sparingly ' in varied, large shapes.

October 1944 - more 'elaborate' patterns began to emerge from the factories, with dark grey often used when olive green was unavailable.

November 1944 - many tanks recieve a base coat of olive green with a hard edged pattern of dark yellow and red brown.

Soviet Camo

I'm sure I've mentioned it somewhere else but wanted to make a quick point about Soviet vehicle camo.

For the most part, the Russians didn't deviate much from 4B0 Protective Green ( although theres as many different versions of 4B0 as there were factories and each weathered very differently ). There were orders issued about the application of camo paint but they were largely ignored. Theres a number of possible reasons for this but the two main ones are..
  • Early in the war, vehicles just didn't last long enough for crews to bother camouflaging. There are many 'recorded' instances of vehicles being driven from their factory, straight into battle.
  • Later in the war, once they were advancing rather than defending, camo was less useful. You don't need to hide if you're attacking.
How significant those suggestions are is anyones guess but most Russian vehicles you'd see would be a shade of green, with the addition of white distemper/whitewash in the winter.

Aircraft tended to have camo applied in the factory so you can often recognise a planes origin and year of manufacture by the pattern. They also made more effort to change the colours by location and season, so those in the south of the country tended to have warmer patterns.
Beyond the application of white distemper in the winter, most fighters were left in their factory finish. Bombers and larger two engined aircraft were more likely to recieve in the field combinations of the official camo colours.

( Note: I've been quite liberal in my use of colours. Using 'exact' colour representation in game would render models far too dark, so in general they tend to be brightened. In addition, many players will be used to seeing illustrations of these in hues and shades that barely resemble the original. So I've tried to cater for this as well. I've seen this range from near flourescent to very dull. The reality would be closer to .. dusty.
Dates are approximate or the date of the order. It could often take a few months for it to be dominent in the field as paint took time to manufacture and get to maintenances depots and crews.)

If there's interest I'll add more info as DLC are released.

Non-Camouflage-Colors:

I would like to have the option to choose from a selection of easy to see "Non-Camouflage-Colors"... or 'Mix' of " Non-Camouflage-Colors".

Could this be made available at some point in future?.

A simple German three-tone camo (green and brown on yellow - no Ambush!) would be cool.

Also for Germany: whitewash on grey base and whitewash on yellow base paint.

And some US camos please ...

More camos is always nice. Now I'm left wondering what the abstract one would look like with a black or dark grey background with brass or bronze highlights.
Mildly pretentious Swede. Goes by Path on most platforms, including Steam.

Added a basic red-oxide primer to the German lists. The idea is for it to be used on Prototypes.
It will likely be added with the next update.

Note that there have also been a number of fixes to camo that had been displaying slight incorrectly. Likewise they will appear in a future update.

Updated some info at the beginning of the base game list to better explain the differences between camo types, restrictions on usage, and some of the anomalies that occur due to its complexity.

Can I suggest introducing a specific 3d model for Italian CTVs? If a specific model was not possible, a specific camo with black jacket and gray / green pants would be sufficient in my opinion.
Thanks for your attention and good work!
