Sambre-like scenario

Post by pyruse » Fri Jan 11, 2013 4:46 pm

We played a scenario loosely based on the Battle of the Sambre last night. This was with v1.
The Romans under Julius Caesar (IC) had an advance guard of 1x4 elite legionaries (the Xth) plus 2x4 average legionaries, 1x6 light horse (Numidians) and 1x6 slingers. The legions were on a large hill more or less in the centre of the table, the light troops on either side.
Off table to the Roman rear was the rest of the army in two groups (each with a TC):
1x4 Superior legionaries, 1x4 average legionaries
1x4 Superior legionaries, 1x4 average legionaries, 1x4 Average protected cavalry (Spanish)
These groups rolled for entry at the start of each Roman turn, requiring <= turn number to come on.

The attacking Gauls were: an FC + 2 TCs
5x8 Average Impact HF warband, 1x6 Superior HF warband
2x4 Superior Armoured Cavalry, 1x4 Superior Protected cavalry, 1x6 Slingers

We used 28mm figures, with a 30mm MU on a 6x4 table.
The Romans had small points advantage, but of course most of their army started off table.

It proved to be an excellent game. The Xth easily repulsed the first assault, but chased the routers and then charged without orders into the supporting Superior Gallic warband, after which it got hit in both flanks. At this point the Romans thought the game was up, but no. Those elite legionaries are tough! And Gallic dice rolling was very poor. In the end the Gauls were seen off with minimal Roman losses, but the game hung in the balance for two or three turns - could easily have gone the other way.

............. Using a 6x4 table I recommend using 1"=1MU. They game will work better ...

We tried 1" and found it too small. We tried 40mm and found it too large. That's why we use 30mm. Just right.
