Field of Glory II: Medieval is coming soon

Post by Mantuvec » Thu Oct 15, 2020 4:49 pm

Field of Glory started out as a tabletop wargame over a decade ago. Designed by Richard Bodley Scott, Simon Hall, and Terry Shaw, the tabletop ruleset redefined wargaming by introducing unprecedented production values as well as setting new standards for the hobby.

Richard Bodley Scott went on to port that experience for PC players and therefore gave new life to Field of Glory with Field of Glory II. Field of Glory II has been such an incredible success among wargamers worldwide, with over ten million multiplayer matches played in three years. It has 90% positive reviews on Steam and a Metacritic of 84 and has become a benchmark for the genre, so much that official tournaments attract hundreds of players across the world and the demand for new content is increasing fast.

The announcement of Field of Glory II: Medieval starts a new page in the franchise. Set in the High Middle Ages from 1040 AD to 1270 AD, which is the heyday of the mounted knight and the time when the entire European continent was in turmoil.

Field of Glory II: Medieval is a deep, maniacally researched game of battles. Armies, equipment, alliances, formations; everything is accurate to the finest detail.

It’s not a game for everyone, but a deep wargame for dedicated wargamers. But it is also a beautifully crafted product that is yet again delivering in its mission to redefine the wargaming experience and bring fresh life to the genre. It also expands boundaries by attracting new players to the franchise.

Beta signups start today for an expected release in Q1 2021. Apply now.

I am a bit confused. Wasn´t the Medieval Era supposed to be part of FoG2?

That's what I thought too just a continuation of DLC. Just watched the Twitch stream - standalone game 1040-1270 to start with. Could be many reasons for the new game approach from better game engine to troops being harder to integrate with ancients, ie; armor and new weapons like longbows. Although they did it in the original TT version.

This fair enough but I hope we are still going to get one or more extra modules for FOG II to over the earlier BCE period back to the Sumerians ? Also hope these will not delayed too much be the release of the new always thought it was a pity that the original FOG never got round to the "Swifter Than Eagles" module and I hope that the same thing does not happen here.

Still buy the Medieval game and all its DLC though

I don´t find the Medieval Era to be that interesting in the first place. Enough to justify a DLC or two, but really not a standalone game.

For a new standalone game, I would have preferred practically everything else. Horse and Musket, Napoleonic, Fantasy, you name it. :-(

I too was hoping for a dlc, rather than a new game and share the fear that we will never see the Bronze Age for Field of Glory II.
I hope that at least the models will be compatible and we can mod them into our beloved game.

So I noticed that Field of Glory Medieval only covers Northern and Central Europe. No Byzantines, Fatimid Egypt, Seljuk Turks, or Crusader States. I'm guessing those will be part of some future DLCs?

The original release roughly covers Oath of Fealty. So my guess is three more DLCs, with Swords and Scimitars for the East, then Storm of Arrows for the later medieval in the West, then Eternal Empire for the East again.

Never been a big fan of medieval warfare but will definitely buy this once it's confirmed that there will be a Crusades DLC.

The plan is still for the FOG2 system to eventually cover 2500 BC - 1500 AD from Britain to India, with FOG2: Ancients covering 2500 BC-1040 AD, and FOG2: Medieval covering 1040-1500 AD.

We felt that although the underlying game system remains substantially similar, the Medieval period merited several rules changes to better suit the period, including a rebalanced points system to better reflect the changed balance between the different unit types in the Medieval period.

The Medieval period was thus better separated off as a game in its own right rather than DLCs for FOG2: Ancients. This allowed us to give it a new Medieval look and sound, and also take the opportunity to improve the UI.

Meh, pretty disappointing announcement overall: Half of the content I was hoping for; broken off into a stand-alone game; still months away from release.

Join the beta if you can then. The game is shaping up very nicely. As to development time, I too of course hoped for more - but between all new art assets and balancing entirely different armies and some new unit types, it makes sense that it took time. Keep in mind that FoGII Ancients was years in development before an announcement was made - graphics and UI, sure, but also balancing the huge number of armies.

Anyway, some day FoGII will be completed and we'll have no more DLCs to look forward to. The time when a game is in development is often the time that it has the most active community. Furthermore, it's always better that a game be given the time it needs to be developed over being rushed out.

looks great! can't wait to mod it! I kid, I kid, I will play vanilla first lol. And then mod...

Interesting to see it as a standalone game, even though the current FOG2 scripts contain all those references to Medieval units we were discussing in that other thread awhile back, can't remember which one now. I guess at some point they were testing medieval stuff in FoG2 (called FoG2: Ancients now?) to see if it would fit right in the existing game, and it did not, so they went for more of an overhaul and a standalone.

I wonder though how much the actual gameplay scripts will change? Richard did mention a similar underlying game system, but with re-balanced points, new units, looks, sound, and UI, so methinks gameplay mods could be portable with some work.

Can't wait to pull up the old file diff code compare and see what's what! If it's not too changed I might try and make an anarchy/refuse mod for it lol.

I'll probably hold off on this game until one or two DLCs get released. Guess which army match-ups I was most looking forward to? Hattin, Manzikert, and Bannockburn. In that order. This announcement for me has just been a textbook case of:

To me, it looks great.

The new graphics are an improvement on the Field of Glory II Ancients IMHO. I just hope my old PC can run it as easily. I love how colourful the units are and the new banners are a nice touch.

I think it's pretty reasonable that even within the same time period, the game would be split into a couple of modules. It would be an immense amount of work to shove everything between 1040 and 1270 from Britain to India into a single release, such that we would have to wait much longer for any release at all, and for God's sake surely the studio has to make money!

The fact that we're getting Hastings, the Mongol invasions and the Teutonic knights into one release is already cause for celebration. I can't wait to simulate a Mongol invasion of England.

I would suppose new Medieval mechanics will also leave the game in better stead for future DLCs, when we have longbows, hand cannons, super-advanced plate armour and all that coming in.

Losing the opportunity to test Roman legionaries against the Mongol hordes is a trivial price to pay.

Well done and thank you Richard! I can't wait to have a game.

Improved graphics and UI???

Any chance that FOG2 Classic will get said improvements? I own a number of games from Battle Front. They held the same titles and architecture/UI more or less for years, but have been selling engine upgrades from v2 -> v3 -> v4.

Also, Paradox is continuously adding content+mechanics to their games as DLC. But I hate to use them as an example, since I think they do so even when it makes no design or software sense, just so they ring up the register again.

I ask because I am more interested in ancients, I doubt I would buy a game without my beloved legions and phalanxes. I would seriously consider an improved FOG2 Classic Engine+ upgrade especially if it were to compatible with all existing content.
