Unfair battle option

Post by bodkin » Tue Jul 09, 2019 12:25 pm

Playing a five battle campaign Franks v Andalusians I win the first battle, but my next one is to either fight at a disadvantage which I don't wish to do against the hordes of javelin cav, spearman and lancers or hold out with my rearguard. I take the second options but it is futile, I am given about eight infantry units all up, no skirmishers, no cav. I have nothing to hold off the masses of javelin cavalry and archers.

I take refuge in the forest to try and survive but I get beaten up by the enemy archers, how was I supposed to win this? At least let me pick my forces, I really don't like this random battle type.

In this instance, given the nature of the two armies, you would probably be better off picking the other option.

I take your point about allowing the player to pick the forces to allocate to the rearguard. We can consider doing this perhaps in the future, but it isn't a trivial task.

I'll second the request to allow players to pick their forces. Invariably when I've played the rearguard scenario I get an awful mix of troops with no apparent correlation to the terrain or the mission, so I've given up on them completely and always opt for the other option.

You can try mirrorred match.
So if you found the setup is not favor on one of the armies, you can see how your opponent would conquer it or suffer from it :)

Me, too.
But with the opponent army selection concealed before it done. So this may not solve op's problem on army got countered by enemy arm.
If the selection is not concealed, then the player who picks later can easily counter-pick, which makes the problem even more serious.

For the current system, I think the most easy way to avoid unfair battle options is just to avoid it.
Check if the challenge is fair to you, before accept it and don't create any challenge you don't think fair.

I've only played rearguard scenarios as part of a campaign vs AI. I generally prefer to play open battles vs other players. I don't really like mirror matches as I'd rather play a wider variety of players and armies than playing the same scenario twice.
