Update v1.2.73 won't even start Win7

I have (had) version 1.1.58 running, w/ Reinforcement/BrokenA/Anabasis DLCs all loaded. No problems when playing those.
I hit "Check for Updates" and it pulled down the 1.2.73 Update and successfully applied it (according to update wizard). The splash screen had the updated look & feel to it, and was pulling news/info (Sin & Sacrifice News). But when I hit "Play Game", I just get the standard Deadlock mouse cursor over a completely black screen. It's as if it's waiting to load up the game, but it never does. The cursor doesn't freeze, and i can move it around, but the game into/Load saved games screen never appears. i let it sit there for 20 minutes and it never recovered.
Killed the process, went back and downgraded to an old update (v 1.1.54) that I had saved locally, and everthing worked again. I then downloaded the Update from the website and tried to apply it manually, versus allowing the "Check For Updates" wizard to do it. Same exact behavior.
Did a complete uninstall, re-installed, then tried to apply the update, and same thing happened. I've run out of ideas.
The Output Log file is very short, and full of errors. Looks like several files aren't installed as part of the update.:
