Ellendun 825 is now available in MP!

Design notes for the battle of Ellendun 825 AD

Even though this is a 9thC battle, there is very little detail available about it. All we know is that king Ecgberht led the Wessex army and was almost certainly assisted by his son, Aethelwulf, and ealdorman Wulfheard. Ealhstan, the Bishop of Sherborne may also have been with the Wessex army. The only person on the Mercian side for certain was their new usurper king Beornwulf. It is likely that the Mercian army contained contingents from Kent, Middlesex and Essex. And that is all we know for certain.

I have given the Mercians just two leader units compared to the four of Wessex to simulate the shaky nature of Beornwulf's grip on his throne.

The defeat of Mercia in the real battle signalled the end of Mercian dominance in the south of the country and the imminent emergence of Wessex as the most powerful of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in the 9th and 10th centuries.

Given Mercia was the agressor historically, they definitely seem to have been foolish according to your scenario which gives Wessex more troops as well as better quality on average. (More hird units for Wessex, no below average fyrd compared to the below average East Saxon ones for Mercia. Not too hard to see why Wessex should win...

Wessex has one more unit than the Mercians and the points totals are 1290 to 1212. Wessex should win this one as they did historically, so it is definitely challenging for the Mercians. Perhaps it works best as a paired game? Report the scores to me and I can look at it again.
