The Historical Battles on Deity.
The Historical Battles on Deity.
Hi everyone.
I've been toying with the idea of making Field of Glory II videos for a little while. I decided to finally pluck up the courage, do the work, and get one done. I've wanted to start working my way through the historical battles on Deity difficulty for a while now, and I felt I might as well record my attempts at it. Here is my attempt at the Battle of Ulai.

I'm having a little bit of trouble embedding the video, so here is the link for now. I hope to produce one of these videos at least once a week, if not more frequently. I'll post my losses as well. I expect to take more than a couple of pastings here; I chickened out of trying the Deity version of Clontarf! I apologise for the potato-quality mic. I'm hoping to get a proper mic at some point in the future.

Also, OT, but subbed to your channel and saw - a fellow Shogun Total War 1 player?? Best in the series, you ask me, none of the sequels matched that atmosphere.

Re: The Historical Battles on Deity.
Shogun I is probably my most played Total War. It doesn't have a lot of the features which annoy me in later TWs; Med I has those massive respawning faction stacks, Rome I and Med II have very long sieges, etc. Essentially, most of the later TWs have at least one thing which pulls me out of the experience. Shogun I is the only one I can play without any moments of drag, and it doesn't hurt that you can actually complete its campaigns in a reasonable amount of time. I'd love to complete Europa Barbarorum's campaign, but who has that kind of time? That's not to say I don't like the other games.SnuggleBunnies wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 3:33 am Also, OT, but subbed to your channel and saw - a fellow Shogun Total War 1 player?? So last week everyone was modder, and now everyone's youtuber?
Just kidding, of course, keep it up, would be interesting to see you play some MP.

I think I'll be able to record multiplayer footage in the future. I need to try splicing some footage together in Youtube Editor.

I attempt the Elamite side of the Battle of Ulai. Will I be able to save the kingdom of Elam, or will my army be ground to dust beneath the desert sands?

Jumping forward about thirteen centuries, I give the Battle of Lechfeld a shot.

Don't look at me. I only managed it on Emperor, Deity is beyond me.

Re: The Historical Battles on Deity.
There's a way, but it involves cheesing the hell out of the AI.
First I turned around and walked back to where the forest protected both flanks, placing my lancers opposite irregular foot and defensive spears in between across from horse archers, ready to face-tank arrows. My light archers were split up in the woods at the extreme flanks.
This will cause the light and non-light horse archers at the ends of the AI's line to wander off into Narnia before turning around and rejoining the battle:

Re: The Historical Battles on Deity.
By the time my lancers break through the irregular foot, there was a gaggle of horse archers piling up behind them trying to get shots off on my defensive spears. My pursuing lancers caused them to evade in weird angles letting me get in rear charges against horse archers that have already evaded. My defensive spears followed up the best they could, blocking off possible flank attacks on my lancers, ZOCing horse archers and face-tanking arrows, or charging the horse archers to drive them in front of my waiting lancers, as the situation require. Be very careful about letting the AI's irregular foot charge your defensive spears. In my case half of the defensive spears that got charged by irregular foot disrupted on impact due to the deity quality buff/debuff.

This is fantastic work. I still need to beat this battle myself, but I'm very impressed that you managed it. I'll need to take another look.

Re: The Historical Battles on Deity.
Next step is to play the side that lost historically on Deity level...
I watched the Nineveh battle and it was truly impressive. Haven't yet looked at Lechfeld I and II, but being half-Hungarian my sympathy somewhat rests with the Magyar.

Re: The Historical Battles on Deity.
I suspect the Magyar side would be easier. The AI is fairly bad at dealing with horse-archers. A single non-light horse archer in the AI's rear would paralyze multiple units due to fear of flank charges.kronenblatt wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 1:55 pm Next step is to play the side that lost historically on Deity level...
