Re: There Can Be Only One II! - Round 5!
ROUND 5 - Caesar helping Cleopatra to the Egyptian throne - Battle of the Nile
Things didn't work out too well for Crassus...in fact it was a disaster, and he paid for it with his life. It now seems that perhaps the same will happen for Caesar, as siding with Cleopatra has put him and his Roman army against the Egyptians of her rivals Queen Arsinoe IV and King Ptolemy XIII. Can Caesar beat back the Egyptians and put Cleopatra on the throne, or will he too be having gold for breakfast?
Armies: Roman 105-25 BC vs. Ptolemaic 166-56 BC
Team 5 vs. Team 8
Giacofa93 (Ptolemaic) vs. carpenkm (Roman)
Aetius (Ptolemaic) vs. tyronec (Roman)
When ready to play, the player using the Ptolemaic army sets up the game:
Large/Wide (1600)
Map is Mediterranean agriculture
Open battle
No allies for either side.
There is no re-rolling of the map.
Please post your challenges here so I can make sure everything is going smoothly.
*****Winners always post the battle results and points like this please:
Kronenblatt defeats Aetius39 45-17
Kronenblatt 60 + 28 = 88 total points
Aetius = 17 total points

Aetius39 (Ptolemaic) defeats tyronec 63-42
The armies met in the middle on a hill and clashed fairly quickly. The Romans maneuvered well and busted up the middle while the Ptolemaics chipped away at the sides. Their cavalry also managed to get behind enemy lines and do some damage there in flanks/blocks. It was, however, a mess, and the Romans took a long time to break. There were quite a few well-timed rallies that also helped. Thanks for the game, my opponent played really well!^^
Aetius - 60 + 21 total = 81 points
tyronec total: 42 points

Re: There Can Be Only One II! - Round 5!
After an epic struggle I can report that carpenkm (Roman) beat Giacofa93 70 -39
The Roman line was stretched skilfully by the Ptolomaics. Initially the fighting centred on a rough hill on the right centre. This battel was eventually won by the Ptolomaics but at great cost. Meanwhile the roman Left Flank came under extreme pressure, but with some luck held and the cavalry more than held their own. The Raw pikes left to defend the centre were no match for the Legionaries though and once broken, and with the help of an over enthusiastic warband, the romans were able to flank the pikes. the score line doesn't reflect how close this battle was. Well played and thanks for a very challenging match.

Final Round - Civil War - Battle of Pharsalus
Well, after a very hard-fought campaign the Triumvirs were victorious and settled down to each rule his respective area of control, always helping each other and caring for the overall good of the Empire, until the end of their days...
...just kidding they started fighting almost immediately after only the two of them remained.^^
So the world is not big enough for 2 Caesars, or 2 Pompeys, and...as always...there has to be a settlement.
Aetius and carpenkm have only one thing on their minds as they face each other across the battlefield amongst their vast array of armed soldiers...THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
Armies: Roman 105-25 BC vs. Roman 105-25 BC

Large/Wide (1600)
Map is Mediterranean agriculture
Open battle
No allies for either side.
There is no re-rolling of the map.
I'll let carpenkm decide if he wants to set up or I.
The known world hangs on a thread...who will emerge victorious?

Re: There Can Be Only One II! - Final Round!
Final Round Results:
Aetius39 (Romans) defeats carpenkm (Romans) 41-9
Promoted to Augustus:
Aetius
Demoted to Successor:
carpenkm
And so it ends; there could be only one, as always... On the fields of battle the "true" Romans won over their rivals. Unlike most civil war battles, this was a bit unexpected: a large section of the battlefield was water, with a decent-sized lake in the middle. Along with this, each side was atop opposing ridges. So there never was a massive central melee battle legionaire to legionaire...there was a flanking attempt by both sides around the lake, to which Aetius' army came out the winner.
This was enough to decide the battle, as the retreating troops went back and made carpenkm realize that victory could not be won. He surrendered honorably, and although some called for his head, Aetius Augustus remembered with fond recall the time they shared defeating all their foes, till only two remained. He also knew carpenkm was pushed to rebel by a certain centurion named Treycherous Betraerous, who has often immersed himself in Roman intrigue all too often. So carpenkm was given full pardon, and with friendship restored, was announced as the successor Augustus, when the time came for Aetius to step down or pass to the gods.
Thus ends yet another saga where only one can remain. Yet who knows how many more will come up in the future...?

Re: There Can Be Only One II! - Final Round!
A big thanks to everyone who participated; it was great fun running and playing!^^
If anyone has any remarks, comments, or suggestions on improving or changing the game, feel free to post here or pm me.
Lastly, I will be running a third "TCBOO" tournament once this season's Digital League is finished; recruiting will probably start the last week of the DL so we can get most of it done in the interim. I have some (hopefully great) ideas for the third one, but if anyone has any themselves by all means post or pm them!
Again, thanks everyone for playing, and hope to see you all in the next one!^^
