Pod A
pantherboy (Persians) (14%) 86pts vs Stew101 (Numidians) (40%) 14pts
Mostly in open terrain once again, bar a couple of strategically useful spots of rough, the Persians held off the encirclement to win. One rally for the Numidians would of pushed the game many more turns as a good 6% to 9% of the Persians were about to rout. Tight match.

Karvon (Gallic w/ Samnites) (21 %) 90 pts vs Morbio (Samnites) (51%) 21 pts
Gallic warbands drew up with a large forest anchoring their right. Our light foot deployed to screen the edge of this forest. Our massed horse and chariots hid behind the forest initially. A couple of our allied Samnite foot were deployed deep in the forest as a delaying force. The Samnites advanced in a long line towards our warbands and extended opposite the forest. Their horse was held in reserve. We sent our mounted on a long and rather slow flanking march through and skirting the forest while our lights and mediums delayed the advancing Samnites. We held back a single horse and chariot to screen our slightly open left. As the first of our mounted cleared the far end of the forest, the Samnites shifted his smaller mounted reserve to delay us supported by a few light foot. The infantry battle lines closed with the Samnites attempted to force their way out of the forest around the right of our waiting warbands. With the enemy horse committed, we shifted our token mounted on our left to flank the engaged Samnite line. The infantry battle did not go well for the Samnites; our close order and superior warbands held up even when disordered vs his moderately disordered foot trying to push out of the woods and those fighting in the open faced even stiffer odds. His foot slowly crumbled and our flanking horse hastened the collapse of his center. Our horse and chariots chased his smaller horse about on our far right and finally trapped most of it, but the battle was over before they could be finished off.

Holien Carthaginian (Hannibal in Africa) 202 BC w/Numidian or Moorish 341-56 BC allies (54%) 66 pts Defeats LuciusSulla Seleucid 166-125 BC w/Jewish 163-111 BC allies (60%) 54 pts
This was one tough fight where the Seleucid started in control of a central hill which Hannibal would have to fight up. Not liking those odds Hannibal noticed a rocky hill, backed by woods on the eastern flanks of the enemy seperated from the main hill by a valley with a road meandering through it. Hannibal deployed all on the right flank to rush and try and take that hill to fend off the Seleucid force that had deployed more in a central position. The mad rush began and Hannibal just about stayed one step ahead and ultimately after some knife fights in the woods behind the hill came out on top. The battle truly could have gone their way at one point but the choices taken saved Hannibal and ultimately the Seleucid force had two pike blocks surrounded and the remaining Cavalry in a losing fight with an Elephant. One of Hannibals elephants did break but with the general on top it eventually came back into the fight. A real close match and skillful opponent a well deserved 54 points.
Holien Carthaginian (Hannibal in Africa) 202 BC w/Numidian or Moorish 341-56 BC allies (20%) 85 pts Defeats MorkinTheFree (East) Pontic 84-47 BC (45%) 20 pts
The map was pretty open with some rough ground on the eastern and western flanks. The numerous Pontic Heavy infantry would rule the day if met on equal terms so Hannibal marched forward to the Eastern rough ground to try and secure victory over that terrain. It paid off but not easily as Hannibals Western flank came too far forward and was over come and broke. However, the Pontic force on the Eastern flank was overcome and the battle came to an abrupt halt when broken units from earlier in the game rallied. Some hidden units on the Western flank did come into play and managed to catch a Pontic Legion from behind and route it. A tough game and now I know who is a fan of Mike Singleton games and brought back some memories I had forgotten...

Eastern POD A result.
Stew101 defeated Kroche.
Score 48 : 23.
Stew101 (Numidian & Moorish, with Roman allies) 23 ( 85 points ), Kroche (Carthaginian) 48 ( 23 points ).
The AI delivered a map mostly open on the Numidian side and with a range of hills (open and difficult) across the Carthaginian deployment zone, with two large patches of rough in front of their right and centre.
In an interesting game the Numidians took a core of 7 heavy Roman units of various quality and lots of MI and lights.
The Carthaginians took a good mix, with one elephant, giving them an advantage in HI and cavalry numbers, but less MI and lights.
The Carthaginians deployed their HI and cavalry in their left centre and left flank, with their MI holding the hills on their right centre and right flank.
The Numidians advanced as quickly as they could, taking both areas of rough in front of the Carthaginian hill line.
The Legions then attacked through the two square gap between the two rough patches, straight up the hills at the defending Carthaginian mediums.
The combats here were touch and go, but eventually the Numidian numbers told and the late intervention by the Carthaginian heavy's was blunted by their elephant getting stuck for a couple of turns killing off some light cavalry.
Hero's of the day - the loose warband unit and their General, who secured and held the right hand path of rough against all comers, protecting the Numidian right flank.
They lost most of their combats, even when hugely advantaged, were disordered 3 times and with the help of some Roman Auxilia they routed some spearmen and an enemy General.
Cracking game - thanks very much Kroche.
