Ludendorf (Galatians 280-63BC) defeats Nosy_Rat (Dacians 87AD) 51-21%. 18% attacker casualties, province 22 falls. No attacking armies lost.

The Dacian and Galatian armies met at the gap between two forests, with the larger forest facing the Galatian left extending out north towards the Galatians slightly and the right protected by rocky ground. This suited both armies to some extent; the rocky ground and forest helped to narrow the battlefield and emphasise the infantry battle, which the Galatian army excelled at. However, the forests on both sides of the main line allowed the more loosely formed and flexible Dacian warbands and the deadly Scythian lancers to be hidden.

This meant that King Ludendorf was unable to tell which side of the battleline the Dacian general had positioned his lancers, and had to carefully balance his flanks to avoid danger. In the event, Ludendorf decided to balance his left and his right. However, he recognised that the forest overhang on that side of the battlefield, which was much larger than the forest on the other side of the Dacian line, was an excellent place to hide ambushers and likely where the Dacians would hide the greatest part of their army. He placed his best cavalry, the armoured Galatians, on this side as a result. This decision would prove critical to the battle as it unfolded.

The picked Galatian warbands quickly drove the Dacian skirmishers back towards their lines. Ludendorf's army had been campaigning in German Skythia, and they were used to moving forward under provocation without breaking their lines. As his army pushed into the Dacian line, which was manned from end to end with falxmen, Ludendorf pulled his infantry in away from the forest edge, shying away from the extremes of the Dacian line. This was to avoid exposing them to trouble from the forest, which Ludendorf again suspected contained many warbands that would have an advantage if allowed to fight from the forest's edge. He had units of Gallic allies behind the Galatians, both infantry and cavalry, ready to exploit points in the line the Galatians broke through. These units proved critical, frustrating the Dacian reserves and ensuring that the Galatian warbands could continue to break through unmolested. Despite these odds, the Dacian falxmen fought on grimly for some time.

As the day went on, the Galatians began to get the upper hand on their right flank, the Dacian skirmishers and cavalry steadily being driven from the field despite a deadly attack from the forest by warbands and lancers, which would have spread panic had the Dacian warbands not lost formation and been broken as they tried to emerge from the trees. In the centre, despite fighting bravely, the Dacian falxmen were inevitably driven back by their more numerous Galatian foes. It was at this point that the Dacian lancers and warbands were unleashed on the left. The sudden Dacian onslaught almost crushed the Galatian flank, and many of the Gallic warbands and Galatian cavalry contingents were sent fleeing from the field. The remainder clung on however, the veteran Galatian armoured cavalry fighting almost to the last man in order to save the battle for their king, and as the centre and left of the Dacian line finally crumbled away, the Dacian army began to disengage and retreat, disheartened, from the field. The exhausted Galatian cavalry were in no state to contest this.

The Dacians were forced to retreat from the north towards their capital, Sarmizegetuza, losing most of what had been their core territories less than a decade ago. However, they still controlled a mighty kingdom that covered the old Hellenic lands of Macedonia, Thessaly, and much of Western Anatolia. The war between Galatia and Dacia was just beginning...

The Ptoemaic army defeats the Carthaginians to conquer Numidia 51 by 16% to 42% suffering 12% casualties and hence losing no armies.

Meanwhile on the other side of the border the Carthaginians are slowly crushing the Ptolemaic army in Ptolemaic 50 who are desperately holding on for a draw.

Ludendorf defeats paulmcneil 16-45%. 15% attacker casualties. No attacking armies lost, Britannia 8 falls.
Ludendorf defeats paulmcneil 31-56%. 17% attacker casualties. No attacking armies lost, Ireland falls.

The superior discipline of the Galatian warbands and armoured cavalry prove decisive here.

A hard-fought, grinding defensive battle.

On the large scale battles that have occurred this turn (where battles are 4x4 or greater), if you draw out or get a defensive win, the opponent loses the same number as armies in the other army, not all if greater. All armies are lost on a defense loss of a province or in a 4x4 meet at border.

On other small scale battles, on a defense win, attacker loses the number of armies participating in the battle, no more tgan x4.

I will clarify this in the rules and add illustrations on my next update.
