Challenge1 (German) Draws with Schweetness101 (Dacian) 30-27 - Battle Timed Out

The Dacians drew up the majority of their forces on a large hill, situated on their right flank. There was some desultory skirmishing between the light troops before the German commander decided the Dacian position was too strong to assault. Meanwhile on the German's right they sent their lancers and light cavalry forward to try and entice the remaining Dacian forces to advance. Unfortunately, the intended advance was ambushed by Dacian troops hidden in a forest protecting their left and although no serious casualties arose, the German probe was checked and had to withdraw.
The Dacians eventually began to come off their hill, after giving the German light troops a good thrashing. They also followed up the retreating German cavalry on their left, but ran into spears and more spears and the ensuing mass brawl between the Dacian warbands and the German shieldwall deteriorated into the usual pushing and shoving match.

Night fell before either side could inflict enough casualties to rout the opposing army.

SnuggleBunnies (Dabuyid) defeats General Shapur (Assyrian) 52-5

The battle was divided into 4 distinct stages. At the start of the day, the Assyrian army had deployed with their foot on two enormous hills (over height 100), one of which was also protected by difficult slopes. Their cavalry were on the flanks. The Dabuyids had deployed a long line of their fearsome Dailami Infantry, extending into a large forest. Their cavalry deployed to their right.

1) The majority of the Dailami force wheeled right to attempt to outflank the Assyrian left wing cavalry. As they do so, the Assyrian right wing cavalry, supported by some of their infantry descending from the Difficult Sloped hill, pursued, pelting the 'withdrawing' Dabuyids with arrows and sling stones. The Dabuyid right continued to forge ahead, but the center about faced to confront their tormentors. As they did so, about 2000 Dailami Infantry concealed in the forest burst out and crashed into the Assyrian's flanks. Most were broken and fled, but about a thousand made it back to the Difficult hill, while another 500 would rally with their friends at the other great hill.

2) On their left, the Assyrian cavalry and chariots confronted the Dabuyid right wing. The Dabuyid horse was not as brave as their opponents, nor did they carry light lances as their foes did. However, with support from skirmishers and infantry, they drove off the Assyrian left.

3) About 3000 Dailami foot stormed the difficult sloped hill from all sides, under a hail of arrows. The defenders, outnumbered 3-1, could not cover the whole length of the hill, and were surrounded and driven off or cut down.

4) The Dabuyid army slowly surrounded the remaining Assyrians, and eventually attacked from all sides. Some of the defenders were on gentler slopes, and assaulted from two sides. Others had been shaken from missile fire, or hadn't quite recovered their spirits from having fled in the earlier fighting. As the Dabuyids broke through to the top of the great hill, a slaughter ensued.

Challenge1 (Galatian) defeated SnuggleBunnies (Rus) 61-51

A bloody encounter where the Galatian warbands managed to out last the Rus shieldwall. It was touch and go for some time but the Galatian cavalry on the left managed to hold on long enough to deny the superior Rus cavalry from making a telling contribution while the Galatian warbands surged forward. Once the shieldwall started to break and with their cavalry still not able to come to their aid, after despatching the Galatian mounted, the warriors were able to use their superior numbers to overwhelm the Rus spears.

General Shapur (Ach Persian 553-546BC) defeates Karvon (Thracian 329-281): 40-30

Two weak CC armies and and 2 large forests on opposite sides of an open field was always going to lead to a hesitant battle.

As usual, Karvon probed with his skirmishers and light cav getting some early hits. But Persian archers took their toll also. In the end, sensing he might have the edge in warrior backbone Karvy threw in the line troops and elite cav.

Sadly, for the plucky Thracians, with not enough turns to see the plan thru and the Persians not being the jelly backs they seemed to be earlier, the Persians came thru with a somewhat bloodless victory.

Actually, it's a 2-2 draw as neither army was broken and we both killed at least 25% of the enemy.

...and yeah your guys got a second wind there towards the end between your rallies and passing morale checks.

Challenge1 (Roman 490-341BC) defeated TheGrayMouser (Pontic 84-47BC) 43-6

With the Pontic forces not being able to bring their superior cavalry to bear and some easily defensible terrain on the Roman right, the army of Pontus struggled to find a foothold on the battlefield. The Roman hoplites were more than a match for the motly, hodge podge of Thracians, Cataphracts and wannabe legionaries and with seemingly little fight (unlucky cohesion checks), the Pontic army steadily collapsed.

Draw of the century

General Shapur Avar drew GreyMouser Welsh 59-59

A long no quarters battle of cav archers vs scores of infantry - in the end we were fiching with just a few units as the field was strewn with the dead

Good game indeed!

Karvon (Parthians) defeated Challenge1 (Byzantines 620AD) 67-45 4-0

Parthian archery whittled down advancing Byzantine horse. Wild back-and-forth battle saw Cat's break and chase off a number of opposing lancers. Both sides broke and chased offboard some horse. Pursuing Parthian light horse herded a number of Byzantine routers far from the battle never to return. Several worn out Byzantine lancers swept away in a final flank attack, breaking the army.

A hard fought and interesting battle.

Record = Wins-Ties-Losses D = Enemy Destroyed L = Own Losses

With 8 of his 10 games completed, SnuggleBunnies (6-0-2) has the lead with 25 pts.

General Shapur wins the Rabbit award for finishing all 10 of his games first.

Most everyone's down to 1-2 games left to play, so a very good rate of completion.

Schweetness101 (Spanish 718-899) defeats TheGreyMouser (Persian 224-349) 63-57

was a very close game of course. The terrain was very favorable to Spain with water and mountains creating a narrow and easily defended pass in the middle of the map. See an image here from about mid game:
https://imgur.com/e7PkPR3
Spain lined up a combination of cheap defensive spearmen on the flanks of a rough patch in the middle of the pass, and bowmen with irregular foot on the rough ground in the middle, with a complement of light foot in front and in the forest on the left and lancers lined up behind. Spain also had a secret force of light foot, cavalry, and lancers hidden in a swamp on the right that guarded a one tile wide pass through the otherwise impassable mountains. In the screenshot above these forces have already left the pass and attempted to flank to somewhat mixed success. Meanwhile, on the main line persian light foot and horse archers skirmished with the spanish ranged, the persian ranged cav withdrew, and the cataphracts crashed into the cheap spanish defensive spears, breaking some of them and in a few cases getting behind the line. Some cataphracrts broke through and managed to flank while others were themselves flanked by spanish lancers kept in reserve. By the end the battle had devolved into the total chaos seen below:
https://imgur.com/ThVDX3P
Persia broke and scattered multiple lancer units with cataphracts and elephants, and some of the Persian spears finally broke fighting the spanish spears and cavalry. Both sides suffered very heavy losses and it could have easily gone either way, but it ended at the hard 60% cap.

GG to TheGreyMouser.

SnuggleBunnies (German) defeats TheGrayMouser (Turkish) 64-46

The Turks goaded the German lancers into a premature charge by harassing them with arrows. This went badly for the Germans, who mostly were unable to catch the Turks, and then shot out of their saddles and attacked in the flank. Luckily, some survivors regrouped, and the arrival of infantry in the support of spearmen and massed archers saved the day, the Turks being low on arrows at this point.

A close, chaotic game.

Haha, real life forgetfulness. It was a great game, I recall you skillfully infiltrating villages and reeking havoc on my forces with converging Zoc’s!! Thank for posting!

Sorry all of the slow play and reporting! I have one last game to report ( with karvon) and one final game wrapping up ( also with karvon)
