I will send you an invitation on 18/9 and you will need to put your name down in the Classical Antiquity recruitment thread, probably within the first 48 hours as places go very quickly.

stockwellpete wrote: Sun Aug 29, 2021 7:32 pm At the moment, we do not really do very much about players who play consistently slowly throughout the season. Provided they do enough to pass the two Time Control checks (after 3 weeks and 5 weeks) then we have mainly concentrated on players who go absent (AWOL) during a season, or who leave unfinished matches at the end. Players who do this are usually given a “yellow card” and banned for one season, unless they have a genuine reason for non-completion (e.g. family illness, work-related issues and so on). A repeat performance usually leads to a “red card” and a permanent exclusion from the tournament. But players who are very slow, and who manage, more or less, to finish their matches in a mad rush at the end of the season, have generally escaped from any sanction up until now.
Just one additional element to add to this. Players getting a "yellow card" can cancel it out when they return by completing a season without any issues at all. They can only do this once.

So whereas before a player transgressing, say, in Season 3 and then Season 7 would receive a permanent ban after the second offence, the situation now will be they would still miss Season 4, but provided they completed Season 5 OK then the slate would be wiped clean. A further problem in Season 7 would then only result in a yellow card, not a red, but this second yellow could never be cancelled out.

The Captain and I had a quick game. It didn't last too long, easy win for the Chinese.
The Xionghu light cav. are OK, hard to shoot with XBows and can probably get around a flank somewhere and cause a rout or two, but they are expensive at 40 points and are not going to win a game. The Chinese all XBow units are OK against them but otherwise better to chase them away rather than waste ammo.
However the Xhonghu heavy regular cav. are a mismatch against the mixed infantry, they get out shot and out melee'd. The Chinese just need to charge the light cav away and then shoot the regulars cav. to pieces.
Maybe if the Chinese play defensive then the Xhonghu could do some damage, but if the Chinese attack we concluded the game was one sided.
I think against that the only hope for the Xhonghu would be to run away all game and hope for a draw. Happy to do another test game if anyone thinks otherwise...

I am not going to be changing this match-up for something else. I would expect a top 10 rated player to beat a top 50 rated player most times, in any case, and I have tested this match-up myself.

This seems to be fairly decisive. I'll let the poll run its full course, but it looks like we're off to Sicily for Season 12.

Classical/Biblical poll now closed . . .

Post by stockwellpete »

I am not opposed to doing this for one season, but I think it would be best to restrict it to just one Biblical army per each division and allow players to pick just one Biblical army to make up their four army choices. So, for example, if Player 2 on the list for Division C gets allocated a Biblical army then no-one else in the division will get a Biblical army.

The reason for being a bit prescriptive is that I am seeking to minimise any problems that may be caused in terms of organising matches if a player does not have the Biblical DLC. I am not going to say to players that they must have the Rise of Persia DLC to enter Classical Antiquity this season.

Biblical armies that could be added just for this season
Achaemenid Persians 550-546 BC
Achaemenid Persians (Thymbra) 547 BC
Achaemenid Persians 545-481 BC
Arab 1000-313 BC

I should just point out then we do eventually get the other Biblical DLC then many of these "Biblical" armies will be shifted to Classical Antiquity anyway.

I voted no purely because although there have always been some geographically improbable match ups the timelines for Clasical have always been reasonably consistent. Having Babylonians taking on first century Romans in my view becomes a bit crazy.

Maybe another section for these kind of armies? Late Biblical?

I know a few players took the Persians in Classical last season and got battered v the pikes and Romans!

Classical Antiquity

Instructions

Here is the full army list for the Classical Antiquity league section. There are over 100 armies available to choose from and, initially, players are required to choose 4 of them (from different nations please, so not 3 Carthaginian armies and a Seleucid army, for example). You may choose to use one type of ally with your army which must be nominated now. Notice also the regulation regarding the “Diadochi nation” of primarily pike armies. Please post your army selections in your order of preference in this thread.

Important: you cannot pick your 4 armies, or their allies, from nations that you used in your last season in this section, whether you used them as your main army or as the allies.

Please indicate whether you want to play at 1200 points or 1600 points; the default size for armies in this section is 1600 points.

Once players have been organised into divisions of 10 based on their playing experience and ability, they will then be allocated one of their four choices. The allocation process will give preference to the lowest rated players (see FOG2DL ratings) in each division. Only very occasionally might a player be asked to make another selection at this stage.

Players will need to have both the base game and the Immortal Fire DLC to enter this section of the tournament.

Please be sure to familiarise yourself with both the Rules of Competition and the Players' Guide.

They are the Achaemenid Persians, Carthaginians, Diadochi, Greeks, Romans and Thracians. You still may only pick one army from any of these 6 groups.

Please note: the result of the poll to add Biblical armies for Season 12 was inconclusive so we are staying with the standard Classical Antiquity list.

Instructions

Each player will play five historically themed “mirror matches” against the other players in their division. The TT Mod will no longer be used. There will be a maximum of six divisions in this section and a full fixture list will be posted shortly before the tournament opens. Promotion and relegation will still apply.

In future seasons players will be offered the opportunity to select their own armies in the usual way. The Biblical armies will return for Season 13.

Here are the five historical match-ups that will be used in Season 12 . . .

Chinese (Zhou) 1046-701 BC versus Beidi 1046-701 BC

High Middle Ages is full, reserve places only

High Middle Ages

Instructions

Here is the full army list for the High Middle Ages league section. There are over 140 armies available to choose from and, initially, players are required to choose 4 of them from different nations (so not three Berber armies and one Scots army).

Please post your army selections (and allies if desired) in your order of preference in this thread.

Important: you cannot pick your 4 armies, or their allies, from nations that you used in your last season in this section, whether you used them as your main army or as the allies.

Please indicate whether you want to play at 1200 points or 1600 points; the default size for armies in this section is 1200 points.

Once players have been organised into divisions of 10 based on their playing experience and ability, they will then be allocated one of their four choices. The allocation process will give preference to the lowest rated players (see FOG2DL ratings) in each division. Only very occasionally might a player be asked to make another selection at this stage.

Players will need to have the base game, the Reconquista DLC, and the Swords and Scimitars DLC (to be released next week) to enter this section of the tournament.

Please be sure to familiarise yourself with both the Rules of Competition and the Players' Guide.

Themed Event is full, all reserve places are taken

Themed Event

Instructions

This section will have a Sicilian theme for Season 12.

Matches in this section are played to a tighter schedule and must be prioritised above matches from other sections. A full schedule of matches will be published before the tournament opens on October 1st. Either player may set up the challenge in this section. Remember to PM your opponent as well as placing the challenge and password in this thread. The group stage matches will be completed in the first 5 weeks of the competition, the knock-out matches will be allowed around 18 days for completion in the second half of the season. Unfinished matches will be subject to adjudication.

As usual,12 players will constitute a pool, which will be divided into 4 qualifying groups of 3 players. At the group stage players will play each other in mirror matches so the total of individual battles played by each player will be 4. Only the winner of each group will proceed to the knock-out stage, which will consist of semi-finals and final (again using mirror matches).

Where players finish with the same number of points at the end of the group stage, the points aggregate from the matches between those players will be used to decide the final places in the group table. If this does not separate the players then lots will be drawn to determine which player proceeds to the next stage of the competition.

Note: all armies will be 1600 points in this section.

The historical match-ups for this season are as follows . . .

Group stage (players will get 2 of these 4 match-ups)

1) 2nd Sicilian War 410-404 BC
Syracusan 412-281 BC v Carthaginian 410-341 BC

2) Peloponnesian War 431-404 BC
Syracusan 412-281 BC v Greek 460-281 BC

3) Carthaginian attempt to conquer Sicily 278 BC
Pyrrhic 280-275 BC with Syracusan 280-211 BC allies v Carthaginian 280-263BC

4) First Punic War 264-241 BC (Battle of Agrigentum 262 BC)
Roman 280-220 BC v Carthaginian 262-236 BC

Knock-out stage

5) Gothic War 535-554 AD
Byzantine 493-550 AD v Ostrogoth 493-561 AD

6) Muslim Conquest of Sicily 827-902 AD
Byzantine 740-903 AD v Arab Abbasid 836-873 AD

Re: This High Middle Ages recruitment thread will open on Saturday 18th September . . .

Post by stockwellpete »

Please note that the armies for the new DLC "Swords and Scimitars" are included in the above list. This DLC will be released on 23rd September, 5 days after recruitment has opened. Players wishing to enter this section are quite welcome to put "armies to follow" in their post when putting their name down. Play will start on 1st October in this section, but I will delay army allocation for as long as possible, until Wednesday 29th September, so that you have some time to look at the armies in the new DLC.
