Slow play . . .

Post by stockwellpete » Wed Oct 24, 2018 11:24 am

I just want to remind everyone of the rules regarding match completion in this tournament as we approach the half-way (5 weeks) Time Control check at 9pm (GMT) on Tuesday 6th November. This second check is more rigorous than the first one (after 3 weeks), as players who are behind with their matches are much more likely to be replaced by reserves. Experience has shown that players adrift at the half-way point usually do not make up the deficit in the second half of the tournament.

Firstly, Rule 3 states . . .

"It is expected that players will complete all their fixtures. Players who do not may be excluded from subsequent seasons."

The point about this is that I am trying to run a high-quality tournament where the problems of slow play, or absent players, are minimised. In that way, everyone enjoys the tournament more and players are more likely to return in subsequent seasons. Players who go missing half way through a season, or who leave a big chunk of their fixtures unfinished, or un-played, at the end of a season will not be invited to the next season and will usually be restricted to two sections if they return to the tournament after that. A further breach of the same rules will result in their permanent exclusion from the FOG2DL.

Secondly, Rule 3 also says . . .

"Players must register one result in each section they have entered within three weeks and three results within each section they have entered within five weeks (i.e. the halfway stage) of the opening of the tournament or they may be replaced by a player from the reserve list."

As you can tell from the latest league tables there are a number of players who have not registered a result in the various sections and yet they are still continuing in the tournament. Some of these players are reserves who joined the tournament late, or are players who explained to me before the tournament started that they would be starting a bit later than October 1st (I try to be flexible and agreeable when I know a player has been reliable in the past). A few of these players though are playing quite slowly and I have allowed them to continue only because they have told me that they have a significant number of matches in progress. I realise that if you get involved in long 24 turn matches right at the start of the tournament then these can sometimes continue beyond the first Time Control point even though you are playing at a reasonable pace. In any case, the main purpose of the first Time Control is to identify complete non-starters and I am satisfied that we do not have any of those this season.

But, as I have already said, the second Time Control is enforced more firmly. Players who are well behind with their matches are very likely to lose their place in one or more sections that they have entered. For example, if a player has entered three sections then to comply with Rule 3 they should have completed a total of 9 matches across the tournament by the half-way stage. If that player has completed 8 matches and has other matches in progress then that is OK, but if they have only completed 5 matches, and in one section have completed only one match, then they are going to lose their place in at least one section, maybe two, and they will face further restrictions when they enter the tournament in subsequent seasons.

Thirdly, Rule 6 says . . .

Please treat organisers and other players in the way that you would wish to be treated yourself. Please visit the Field of Glory 2 forum regularly. Try to respond to communications as quickly as you can and once you have started a match play at a regular pace so it can be completed within a reasonable timespan. It is expected that all matches will be completed within one month of their starting date. Matches that continue for longer than one month may be adjudicated. If you are unable to play for a short period of time then please let your opponents know in advance, whenever possible. Please notify the tournament organisers if you are unable to contact an opponent to start a match after 7 days have elapsed.

This is mainly relevant to the second half of the season where very slow players, who may also not be doing too well in the tournament, hardly move at all thereby completely spoiling the enjoyment of the other players. There is no need for you to suffer this sort of situation. If you think a match is going to take longer than a month then please contact me in the first instance and I will try to get things moving. If I cannot, and a month passes from the start of the match (note that the starting date is considered to be the date that the challenge for the match is first posted on the forum) then the match will be subject to adjudication. Also, if a player seems to be ignoring your challenge (they may just have overlooked it) then let me know and I will intervene as quickly as I can.

Fourthly, Rule 6 states . . .

If your opponent has not moved at all for 7 days without explanation then you are entitled to claim the match automatically by using the in-game facility to do this on the multiplayer system.

You do not have to ask permission to do this, just go ahead and claim the match. If you feel uncomfortable about it by all means send a PM to your opponent giving them a bit more time to respond.

Most of you will not need to concern yourself too much about these rules as you always complete your matches at an excellent pace, but there is always a slow contingent each season and I will do everything I can to stop slow play from spoiling your enjoyment of the tournament. Slow play is not only frustrating for those who experience it but it can also distort the league tables and spoil a close finish because the players do not know if certain matches will be played or not. If we did not have these rules then I fear that tournaments like these would be much more shambolic, and much less enjoyable, affairs. If you have any questions about this please post them in this thread.

Division D

Herode_2 (Seleucid 300-206 BC) defeats SLancaster (Carthaginian, Hannibal in Italy 216-203BC) by 68% - 45%

"Phew !" shall be my main comment, since the score underrates the combativity of Carthaginians : victory has been reached by a tiny margin against a very manoeuverable opponent definitely eager to flank my phalanxes.
Thanks for the game !
