Division C

garymann - Ostrogoth 493-561 AD beat mkjhartmann - Scots-Irish 477-846 AD 40-3

To be fair, it was a very flat and open piece of Scotland, so good lancer country. Mike was unlucky with the terrain and with a more representative piece of Scotland would have performed better.

Division C

lydianed (Assyrian) defeats MikeMUC (Persian) 62-41.

Great game which was very close throughout. The persians occupied a series of linked hills and the Assyrians formed up opposite. The Assyrians made headway through combined chariotry and cavalry and steering clear of the persian immortals until the very end. Well played.

Division C

Geffalrus (Athenians) defeats deve (Lydians) 40-4. Good game to my opponent.

A large forest and mountain on the Athenian flanks prevented the Lydians from making early use of their incredible cavalry. Skirmishers were sent forward by both sides, but the Athenians came out ahead. Rather than sit put, the Athenians rolled their armored hoplites forward, while the flank hoplites played face-off with the cavalry. Unable to effectively outflank the Athenian line, the Lydians were forced into a frontal confrontation. Having access to Veteran hoplites and a larger armored hoplite pool proved decisive in the end.

The scope of the battle.

klayeckles (Ptolemaic) defeats pantherboy (persian) 41:6
the deadly rain of arrows was brief enough and spent mostly on the ptolemaic skirmishers that the pikemen were able to engage the immortals quickly and defeat a big part of the army before the rain of death could do it's damage. funny, but as lopsided as the score is, it could have easily turned the other way and been almost as lopsided the other way except for some persians that just wouldn't stand long enough to allow their greater numbers to get into the thick of it.
