After the league matches are done, we have to set up friendly matches to test out things. I know for sure I need to learn how to counter those darn samnite medium infantries :?
If any of you feisty Div D folk want a practice match, I'm up for it as Div A is proceeding at nice slow and stately pace. Practice games are much less stressful than League games.

The Samnites are pretty dangerous - but if you can survive that first charge, you'll usually be fine if you're using heavy infantry with pikes or offensive spears.

The offensive spearmen haven't enough power to beat them. Even on a hill like my battle. Maybe you should set a trap...

Depends on the Samnites. The veteran samnites will require either an average pike or a veteran hoplites to defeat in melee (if they survive the impact). Heavy infantry in the open have a +1 to cohesion that can offset the impact penalty, and then the medium foot penalty of the samnites can hurt them if they start losing in melee. The best units to beat down the Veteran Samnites are the high tier pikes and Roman cohorts. Combo of superior or better morale to resist the impact, and then armor or deep pike to beat them down. Of course, they are much more expensive than veteran Samnites, which is the real problem. Mid-cost superior impact foot are one of the best values out there for infantry. They are competitive on impact with more expensive units, while having the morale to survive multiple turns in melee.

The non-veteran version can be dealt with my normal hoplites in the same fashion, because they have 100 POA in melee, while the basic Samnites will only have 50.

An interesting battle in which I had to use 200% of my brain to block the huge forces attacking my left wing and at the same time manage to eliminate the centre of the enemy before my even weaker right wing would allow Huscarls and shieldwalls to pass.
I awoke again last night in a cold sweat screaming "Veteran Muslim Spearmen."

Pete my 1 point comes from a close loss and not a draw so I should be 1 win and 4 losses.

There may be a few anomalies from what has been usual before, but as I made clear before the start of this season these will be considered "fortunes of war" and not a good enough reason to ask for a restart.

Please post any queries about the update in either the main forum or the technical forum.

I'll get your record right eventually! More "senior moments" now than I can count.

Division D for Daring

Barrold713 - (Dacian 89-106AD with Sarmatian allies 25-375A) defeats GeneralKostas (Byzantine 551-578AD) 45-16

Some serious die roll misfortune plagued the General's good efforts. Thanks for the match

The Byzantine Army has very powerful cavalry units, but without infantry support they don't have any luck in the battlefield.

ConstantinIX has won Late Antiquity Division C!

Post by stockwellpete » Thu Feb 27, 2020 12:21 pm

Our first winner of the season is newcomer ConstantinIX who has used his Roman army (24BC–196AD) to great effect winning 8 matches (and drawing the other one) to win automatic promotion from Division C of Late Antiquity. Well played ConstantinIX. :D

Many thanks to all my opponents (All the games were very pleasant) and especially to the organizers. It must be a burden to follow and to keep things on tracks . But that said, I was looking forward to the week summary :-).

Division B

cromlechi - Scots-Irish 50-476AD 31% drew with Questar17 - Gepid 493-567AD with Germanic/Gothic Foot Tribes allies 260-599AD 17 %

Sadly the first time I have encountered poor sportsmanship and rudeness in this tournament. My opponent seems to think that 'I deserve nothing' because I didn't leave the woods to be slaughtered by his heavy foot. I could ask him why he didn't enter said woods to be slaughtered by my medium foot. I did apologise for the map which I did think ruined the game but I would have done nothing but commit suicide by leaving them as the rest of the map was completely open. I hope I do not encounter such rudeness again as it's the first time in the many years of playing in this tournament FoG 1 and 2 that I've experienced this.

Dear Cromlechi,

My intention wasn't to offend you. I'm sorry if my words seemed rude for you.
The reason of my phrase "you deserve absolutely nothing" is related to your tactics to cover almost all your troops at the edge of the battlefield. And here under i'd like to reason my phrase.
After breaking almost all his skirsmishers and chariots, i moved all my troops to the wood with his medioum infantry and rest of chariots at the edge of battlefield as cromlechi wanted according to his message in the chat. Once my troops were close to his in the wood, i started to fire his troops by my skirmishers with ease but cromlechi did absolutely nothing. Realizing that by this mode i will not score 40% for a victory, i started to attack by my heavy infantry his medium infantry in the wood, causing my heavy becoming severally disordered vs his moderately disordered troops. Finally it was remaining 3-4 turns before nightfall, our score was about 25:10 in my favour but cromlechi still weren't attacking me/ doing nothing what means he wouldn't score any point. It was my 1st time in FoG 2 when the opponent was using so defensive but useless tactics and that was surprised me as i always play for a win.
Again my phrase "you deserve absolutely nothing" isn't an offence but my opinion. Above mentioned confirms that.

By the intention or not but you posted incorrect result of the battle. Below i'm posting a correct result of the battle with a picture. It's the 1st time of FoG2 participation when the opponent posts wrong score.
