Geffalrus (Antigonids) defeats Najanaja (Romans) 47-20. Good game to my opponent.

For the fifth time this season in Classical, the Antigonids faced an opponent on the other side of a stream. After lamenting the relative ineffectiveness of pikes and lancers in such terrain, the Antidonids set about doing the dance of the skirmisher. Both sides sensibly refused to cross the stream while the Antigonid skirmishers dealt substantial, but non-fatal damage to the Roman Velites. Eventually, the Antigonid Royal Guard saw an opportunity to ford the river, and surged forward with cavalry support, pushing back the Roman Equites. To avoid the Veteran Pikes, the Roman Hastati and Elephants attempted to fall back, but were disrupted by some bad cohesion rolls. With most of the Antigonid forces on the right flank, the Romans crossed the stream to chase down the weaker left flank, ultimately catching and routing some Thureophoroi. After a flurry of activity on both flanks, the final phase of the battle saw the Romans attempting to drag down two pike squares in the center of the field, while the plentiful Antigonid cavalry, freed from the elephant threat, rampaged all over the exposed Roman flanks.

While the stream prevented the Antigonids from rushing for a direct clash, the otherwise open terrain of the battlefield allowed them to leverage the mobility advantage of their cavalry wing to pin, delay, and distract the Roman infantry.

The two armies maneuver to contact.

Sunnyboy (Ostrogoths 493-561 AD) beat Barrold713 (Numidian or Moorish 55 BC-6 AD)
40-5

A mass of light javelin foot and horse made for quite a challenging contest. The Ostrogoths were able to slowly wear down the swarm of skirmishers. With casualties mounting the Numidian main body moved into action however a fragmenting and subsequently breaking pachyderm disrupted some neighbouring foot who were also put to flight bringing a rapid conclusion to the fight.

Thanks for the game!

Seleucids (Nijis) beat Indo-Greeks (Morbio) 51-23.

Clever maneuvering of the Indian archer line caught the phalanx off balance, and stripped away the elephants and cavalry protecting their flank. The phalangites were forced to launch a disjointed charge through the arrow storm that could have been disastrous - but they were able to close to melee with enough ordered troops to win a costly victory before the Indians could turn their flank.

Geffalrus (Antigonids) defeats Breogan (Greek Mercs) 47-10. Good game to my opponent and congratulations to MorkinTheFree as I believe this puts his 31 point total as insurmountable.

In 323 BC, a large army of Greek mercenaries and colonists settled in Bactria decided they'd rather return home, and upon news of Alexander's death, took up arms and marched back across Persia. In our reality, Peithon the Satrap of Media was sent to stop them. But in this alternate universe, Antigonus the One-Eyed was dispatched instead. Antigonus confronted the Greek host on the border of Hyrcania where the road leading west was pinched by a massive rocky plateau, a large forest, and a substantial swamp. Bringing only a small contingent of pikes, lancers, and elephants, the Antigonids instead relied on their medium foot and light skirmishers. The light and medium troops quickly occupied the plateau dominating the center and saw off multiple assaults by the Greek peltasts. The Greek heavy hoplites valiantly tried to storm the heights in many places, but could not overcome the steep slopes and rocky terrain. Meanwhile, the Macedonian forces marched down the road and engaged the remaining hoplites on open ground. Unable to seize the plateau, the Greek army was slowly ground down by the pikes and outflanked by the elephants and lancers. The survivors were rounded up and sent back to Bactria.

Thureophoroi were definitely the MVPs of the game for my army. On open terrain it's tempting to prefer hoplites, but they really earn their keep on rough terrain against Lspear/sword foot.

Bluefin (Syracuse) defeats Kifi (Macedonian) 46-11.

Playing for the first time in their traveling red uniforms, the Syracusans were able to stand up to the Macedonians in a very narrow battlefield -- mountains on one side, body of water on the other. Fun battle on an interesting battlefield. We are sampling the olives and vino tonight. Thanks for the game, Kifi!

Bluefin (Franks) defeats Barrold713 (Numidian) 46-11.

Frightened by the sheer number of javelin horse, it took a bit for the Franks to figure out what to even do. Slowly the Franks were able to gain control and the rapid defeat of an elephant shifted the tide of the battle. A very interesting battle. Thanks for the game, Barrold!

Match 4

Pydna

rexhurley (Romans) defeats nyczar 52/17 a lot harder fought than the score lines indicate as I had a lot of units and a left flank in tatters but once my elephant went rampaging around in the back and my my right flank cav got into the back of units its fell apart form nyczar.

Thank you for quite a challenging game, quite like nyczar will get his revenge in the mirror as I only have a centre left at this stage
