HOW TO START MY ATHENS CAMPAIGN?

Post by Briggs26 »

As posted in a previous thread, Athens by this point was well past it's prime. It had been pretty strong under Alexander (due to him relying on it's fleet and despite the battle of Charinea) and around 320 BC it launched the Lamian war against the Macedonian "regent" Antipater, winning several key battles, and trapping a Macedonian force inside Lamia (so much for Macedonian military superiority.) Unfortunately the Diodotchi temporarily allied together and crushed the uprising, forcing Athens to submit. It kept it's government, but a few years later when Antipater died they backed the wrong side in the civil war between his son Cassander and his general Polyarchon Viva Video, they were occupied and the victorious Cassander put a tyrant, Demetrios of phaleron in control. The citizenship was limited to 4,000 men, and it's democracy was finally dismantled. She would never be powerful again, and was basically sworn to Macedon.

As a result, at campaign start she's a vassal of Macedon, and will thus be a target of Epirus. Sparta's also a major threat, and will certainly need to be eliminated quickly, despite the fact that by this point the "Spartan" army was really a rabble of mercenaries and inferior trained old-fashioned Hoplites.
