Steam Workshop?

Post by MarkShot » Thu Aug 08, 2019 7:10 am

I notice there is no Steam Workshop.

So, does this mean that all modding will be done outside of Steam?

That does not really bother me. In fact, it is perhaps preferable. Steam forces you to only have one total conversion mod active at a time. It is this way, because your mod state is not really simply the state of your disk, but also the state of Steam's database of your subscriptions.

But this game looks like in a few years to perhaps have a 2 or more total conversion mods worth playing. Normally, I might just want to have them installed side by side with multiple instances of the game. Even running Steam (without the workshop) this is well possible. It just requires a simple script and the use of a Window's junction that changes where the Steam game directory resolves to.

So, what's the intent. Mod-able via the Steam workshop or only through direct local disk updates?

Thanks.

PS: I forgot to mention that I am running the game via Steam.

I don't own Empires but I feel I can safely answer judging by the 8 or so titles I own from this site. Everything I've seen, be it scenario or mod, is either downloaded within the game itself or someone posts an external link for you to manually DL and install. I don't have any Slitherine games that utilize Steam outside of updating with patches.

I think I like that better. It will allow for multiple installs of total conversion mods without having to worry about workshop subscriptions.

Using a simple script which creates/destroys Microsoft junction files is enough to have multiple Steam installs of the same game.

You remember all the total conversion mods RTW1 spawned. Off the top of my head: Roma Surrectum, Europa Barbarorum, Darth Mod, Ab Urbe Condita, ... I see this game doing something similar. All that is required is time.

A junction looks like a directory, but points to another directory. So, the directory "FOGE" could do this:

FOGE -> FOGE1

or

FOGE -> FOGE2

or

FOGE -> FOGE3

or

FOGE -> FOGE4

And Steam would be very happy. If one checks their C: drive one will find lots of junctions used by Microsoft to keep compatibility for other versions of Windows.
