Slitherine acquires the Master of Magic franchise

In a continuous bid to update and modernize popular strategy IPs and bringing them to the 21st century, Slitherine has acquired the full publishing rights to the Master of Magic franchise from Atari.

This is one of the most recognizable names in videogames history. It’s one of the key pillars of turn-based strategy gaming and it has created a genre of its own that is still alive and thriving today.

Master of Magic first released on MS-DOS twenty-five years ago in 1994 and it quickly became one of the most cherished games of its genre with its infinite replayability and the sheer number of customisation options it gave to the players.

“We are looking forward to working on this immensely popular franchise”, said Iain McNeil development director at Slitherine. “We know there is a high level of responsibility when we try and develop sequels or successors to popular IPs. We have proven it is possible to fulfil players expectations with the likes of Panzer Corps when it comes to work on these legendary products”.

Sequels to Close Combat and Fantasy General, both coming this year, are also a testament of Slitherine’s ongoing mission in this space.

“The foundations of what we play today are still traced back to that golden age of gaming. We cannot ignore that, like we cannot ignore that technology has moved on with player’s expectations in other areas such as social integration, multiplayer, narration, ease-of-access and more. It will be a challenge, but we are happy to accept it and try our best to make a game that does justice to the brand”.

Fantastic news. Can you please also try to acquire the rights for Warlords III: Reign of Heroes and Darklords Rising?

I've played so much MoM as a kid that I probably should've spend outside playing instead. Fortunately, I am an adult and married now, so don't care about trivial things such as socialising and developing anymore.

One request- please make a campaign!! Even something simple and similar to the Age of Wonders one would do just fine.

I am old enough to remember MoM fondly. And several more recent 'knockoffs/homages' somewhat less fondly. And then we have AoW, doing all the same things rather better. Hopefully something interesting can be done with the franchise.

I would LOVE to see some old Strategic Studies Group (SSG) and Steve Fawkner titles re-visited and updated for modern gamers and technology.

Still play Master of Magic for a bit every year. So you might say I'm somewhat interested to see what you're going to do with it!

Any news on which developer will be doing it?

And it would be amazing to see both a sequel and a modern remaster of the original game. Some remasters (maybe most) aren't great, but the Bard's Tales ones were very well done (okay different, genre, but also a classic game)

Oh Good! I'd love to see a version which has updated graphics but otherwise identical to the original. OK... as well as an up-to-date adaptation. Suggest new game allows such a choice.

Great Idea!

Request that Byzantine Games starts work on unit models for lizardmen halberdiers, hellhounds, air ships, etc. forthwith. :D

Although paradox and slitherine both focus on strategy tactical game but I like slitherine title more than paradox.
Maybe because slitherine got deeper gameplay compare to paradox.

Paradox games have a wider audience and thus their games tend to be simpler. I also like Slitherine games more but the reality is Paradox makes a lot more money...

My expectations are quite low. Than I hear "Slitherine" I think "casualized gaming", and casualizing will kill the MoM. Happy to be wrong in this case.
