Do to my plans for my Auxiliary force this Scenario, I opt to use some of the more obsolete capture stock that has built up over the Campaigns.

Image
My Auxillaries (Save for the Bruckenpioniere) are assigned to keep an eye on Rommel's advance with Alderauge. I don't exactly want them to advance too quickly and capture Lillie before I have the chance to capture the other Victory Hexes, so keeping my eyes on them and being able to help or possibly block them at times should prove useful.

Image
Control over the eastern side is established quickly, giving me plenty of time to capture Kortrijk as Rommel catches up in the west.

Ending Prestige: 32866 (+4328)
Thoughts: Something about this Scenario was very satisfying to play. Maybe its the feeling of a plan coming together, maybe its the feeling of another successful battle, or maybe its the feeling of utterly overrunning a fairly well defended stronghold with little to no resistance after encircling them and starving the enemy out.
I don't exactly no what else to say here. Lillie would be a tough nut to crack, but the way this Scenario is set up all you have to do is wait until Rommel is in position and let the encirclement neuter the enemy resistance.

I mostly put Alderauge in because I had a single slot left over during deployment, but it comes in handy by revealing exactly where the Britain-based RAF were positioned, allowing my fighters to launch a devastating first strike...until I was brutally reminded about the RAF fighters stations AT Dunkirk.

Ending Prestige: 34385 (+1309)
Thoughts: Well, other than the slip up of forgetting about the fighters based at Dunkirk itself, things went pretty well. Hurricanes were swatted out of the sky quickly, and even the Spitfires couldn't stand up to the combined firepower of my Fighters, especially with the 110s supporting them. In a few turns I had achieved complete air superiority and thus my bombers were given open season on the British ground and naval units.
I do really like these Air focused Scenarios, and I'm already looking forward to 1942 considering the announcement says that there will be more of these types of missions, like the Channel Dash.

There should be three air-only scenarios to look forward to. Time for the Luftwaffe to shine!

I have to admit to being startled each time seeing you mention Pz.Abt. 501 and 502 so early in the war, especially with light weight flame thrower tanks. I expect to see Tigers when I see those numbers!

My numbering system is one of my own design as opposed to how they were historically designated.

The hundreds digit denotes the type of tank while the rest is the units number within that type. In the case of tanks, for example, 000 is tankettes, 100 is light tanks, 200 is medium tanks, 300 is heavy, 400 is super heavy, and 500 is for flame tanks (Funnily enough I used to have Flame Tanks at 400, but quietly changed it to 500 very recently to make room for the Char 2C/Maus in my system).
There are also special cases were I use a letter in the hundreds spot for the more unique Gift Units, like the Neubaufahrzeug being X01 with X representing experimental and the Verdeja's S01 designating it's Spanish origins. I don't use letters like that for captured equipment and prototypes because those units won't always be captured or prototype equipment, whereas with Gift Units I often keep them around as a trophy unit and don't want them messing up my system.

The never ending naming flavor story. In my initial AAR, I went out of my way to not accidentally name the units after any existing ones, but still remain historically faithful to the convention, yet still got a few hits matching actual battalions. Then I went with just 1,2,3,4 etc. in other runs, mostly out of convenience, but the idea you provided about naming with unique names proved really fun in the Wunderwaffe AAR. Designing this naming and applying custom camouflage based on arbitrary rules is a really fun little thing - the more customization the better. Not every player will want to go through all of this, but the fact it's there in the game means a lot for those who do. Kind of like I actually spend 10 times more time building weird custom MtG commander decks then actually playing them later.

With the new rules regarding the Overrun Hero and Steamroller Awards on non-Tanks, my Overrun Hero gets reassigned to Vanguardia as that unit is easily the one with an already farmed Steamroller that would get the most value out of having access to Overrun. My Auxiliaries are slanted to help stablish defensive lines, something that from past experience is very useful in defensive Scenarios like this one.

Image
It doesn't take long for de Gaulle's forces to show up and challenge my main push.

Image
The power of stacking buffs leads to de Gaulle's defeat.

Ending Prestige: 40363 (+6110)
Thoughts: Interestingly enough, this was the first Scenario where I lost a Unit (Without any reloads to try and save it anyway  ). An Auxiliary 2cm Flakviering that got pounced on and destroyed by a pair of de Gaulle's Somuas, despite being in AT mode even. To be fair, I had positioned it on a risky flank, but I really needed something to provide cover for some of my Artillery on that flank so I guess it did its job. I ended up having more than enough AA and Fighter covers anyway even with its loss so I can't complain too much. Beyond that, while certainly a challenging Scenario, my Auxiliaries are often their most useful in such circumstances and this Scenario was no different.

Got to give credit where credit is due. Recon, Aiming assistance, extra Mass Attack AND high ground to take him out, wow.

Other than that, auxiliary troops are amazing in such missions, being literal meat shields. If the AI prioritized them less it could feel a bit of a cheat, but perhaps add to the challenge. A thing to consider if the enemy AI were to scale up with difficulty level in addition to prestige and accuracy.

The initial river crossing goes well enough, now for the real challenge.

I have a plan. Whether it's a good plan or not is to be determined. It pretty much boils down to luring de Gaulle, the Char 2C, and the rest of that armored force into this forest where I can take advantage of Close Terrain. Auxiliary SdKfz 232 will be filling the role of bait, there sacrifice will be remembered and honored.

Ending Prestige: 45677 (+5259)
Thoughts: Well, that didn't work out quite as planned. While I was able to lure de Gaulle to the edge of the forest, he and his forces refused to follow me into it, instead retreating back to Neufchateau. I was still able to take advantage of it to deter attacks on my Infantry, but this led to having to face the tanks on Open Terrain instead of Closed Terrain like I had hoped. In the end though, my forces prevailed, and France is defeated.
Now for a nice, scenic island vacation before taking on the British.

Generally, the British forces I faced in France weren't quite as potent as the French themselves were, and seeing as this is the beginning of our Sealion adventure, I should be able to get away with using this Scenario to rotate some of my less experienced troops to the front. Beyond that, I put some significant emphasis on air defense with my forces, as Spitfires were more than capable of tearing up my 109Es, although hopefully my new 109Fs will fair better.

Image
Forcing the initial landing is tricky, but once I secured a supply depot with Vanguardia and my vanguard began to flood the beaches the British defenders were quickly overrun.

Ending Prestige: 10452 (+5117)
Thoughts: That went almost surprisingly easy. My Core and Auxillary Fighters and Fighter-Bombers managed to down at least one enemy aircraft per turn, usually 2 or even 3 once Shrapnell was unloaded and could be used to soften up targets, and by the time my ground-based Auxiliaries arrived my Core had overrun most of the coast already, regulating them pretty much to camping outside Canterbury to defend my beachhead.
In other news, this was my first experience with the new Paratrooper rules, I can't say I'm a fan. My plan was to use my Fallschirmjager to get behind the coastal defenders where I planned to land, one to take out one of the 2 Strength Infantry blocking the beaches and the other 2 to start securing a Supply point. A much trickier and longer process when my Air Transports need escorts from my already overworked Fighters. I did manage to use them the way I intended, but it took my using my bombers as a sort of screen to block Fighter pathing so they couldn't get completely obliterated. I personally feel this change should have been made exclusively to Multiplayer, which is where they were a problem in the first place, if not just remove them from Multiplayer. Because at this point I don't think I'll be using Paratroopers unless I really need to from this point on as there only real benefit has been somewhat crippled. Which is a same, as I did like the concept of being able to use them to secure encirclements in key spots, with the risk of being counter-encircled.

Good luck to General Flasch and his troops in invading the British! Sneaking in through the less defended western-most beach might be a better option with the new paratrooper rules. Most of the British fighters are based in the northern fields. It takes about three turns for all forces to get in position - before the update....

I did think about that, but the northeastern beach is at least a turn or two further away from where your units start, and I wasn't sure if I would have enough turns to capture everything if I went that way.

For my main landing I always busted one of the strongpoint northeast and landed outside the beaches. I'm pretty sure it's not what the map intends and it requires a solid tactical bomber, best with Double Attack to break in time for the landing. It also means a lot more difficult ground targets to mow down. That said, it has the nice advantage of being out of range of at least half of the RAF in that early stage when everyone is on a boat.

Very interesting AAR. Did someone already inform you about the unit names?
Some of them have names that do not really exist, for example "Spuckfeuer" which would be "Feuerspucker".
Some other ones are just spelt wrong, for example Verteifiger, which would have to be Verteidiger and Alderauge which would need to be Adlerauge.
I guess you dont have Umlauts, right?

As far as I'm aware, my laptop lacks Umlauts yes.
And as for the rest, while I do know a bit of German, I've mostly been relying on Google Translate, so...

Maybe next time I'll stick to English. Less flavorful but I'd actually be able to spell things properly.

Alongside a trio of ground-based Ju88s and some support from my Core Air Force, it is my hope that this squadron will be able to save the Kriegsmarine from their fate.

Ending Prestige: 12665 (+5211)
Thoughts: Despite my best efforts and dedication of my air force I was unable to sink the Royal Navy fast enough to save the Kriegsmarine. The sheer numbers combined with the fact that ship firepower is always treated as the ship being at full Strength means you have to kill them, not just weaken them, if you want to reduce incoming damage, and considering my Bombers could only deal about 1-2 Damage per turn I just couldn't sink the enemy fast enough. Maybe if I had had the Kriegsmarine hide and try to draw as much of the Royal Navy to bombard my units on the coast instead of looking for my ships I could have bought enough time? On the other hand that would have likely caused a significant hit to my Prestige for constant repairs so perhaps it was for the best I didn't. I did manage to eventually claim vengeance by sinking the entire enemy fleet at least.
On the ground, things progress much more smoothly. de Gaulle is forced to retreat and repair whenever he popped up by my Bombers and heavy Artillery, and the British defenses were either overrun or worn down in a couple of turns by my forces.

By skipping the Matildas, I have more than enough Commendations that I have no need to complete the Bonus Objectives this Scenario. I might decide to go for it mid-Scenario depending on how things go, but for now my plan is to hold this line. Which is why I've focused on such an Infantry focused, defensively orientated set of units. With one important caveat...

Image
While I'm not concerning myself with Bonus Objectives, there is something I do want to grab in the northernmost part of the map. And so I'm going to use these 3 to attempt a raid on the Aerodrome.

Image
As expected, Redhill becomes the bloodiest part of my defensive line. Seven Oaks and Leatherhead were lightly defended, most of the defenders behind fortifications just north of the towns, and have rivers I can set my defenses up behind to stack battles in my favor (even if that means I'm not actually crossing the west river to capture Leatherhead. I have all the Primary VPs I need without it, so I'll take the stronger defensive line). Redhill, on the other hand, had a sizable garrison defending it, lacks any such natural barriers, and is also in the central part of the map which allows more vectors for enemy reinforcements to arrive from.

Image
That...was much easier than I had expected. I had assumed there would be at least an AA gun defending the airfield. The lack of Fighters was less unexpected, I had been working hard to shoot down any and all planes that came within range and was very careful with how and where I moved the transport planes.

Ending Prestige: 17178 (+7368)
Thoughts: Mission accomplished and Meteor secured. Choosing to play defensively instead of pursuing Bonus Objectives is almost assuredly the smart play for this map. Add in the extra Auxiliaries to support that defense and I never had any issue holding the line. Heck, the western group spent most of the campaign having its Artillery harassing the enemy on the other side of the river, who never bothered to move, and occasionally having Spuckfeuer swat a plane out of the air. East group also had periods like that, but also had a bit more action. Reinforcements would pile up on the far side of the river, which would eventually prompt occasional attempts to cross that were quickly rebuffed. There also were a fair few units that tried to circle the nearby small lake to flank the group, but there was another river there and since it was usually armor columns Verteifiger was able to hold the bridge with some air and artillery support. Redhill, as mentioned above, was under assault almost nonstop, with occasional 1-2 turns of peace to recover and resupply.
Could I have found an opportunity to push forwards to the Bonus Objectives? Probably. As I said, west group didn't see much action, and my air force had periods where they stayed parked do to lack of safe targets. Had I set my forces up differently and deployed them more aggressively, I probably could have pushed to London itself, which is what I usually do this Scenario. But I had no need to and decided to try playing this Scenario differently than usual.

Didn't find anything too interesting to screenshot, so have a pic of my army after repairs to celebrate the voyage home.

Ending Prestige: 18311 (+3458)
Thoughts: Don't have too much interesting to say about this Scenario. A nice combination of offensive and defensive tactics needed to capture Portsmouth (and Southampton) in 16 turn and deal with the reinforcing armies from the east and west.
As for the whole Sealion experience overall? Frankly, I really enjoy it and am quite glad the devs included it in the game. Sure, its extremely historically inaccurate, but Sealion in general was in many ways a pipe dream from the beginning. It also gives players more opportunity to face off against the British before having to but heads against some minor nations and the the Soviets for 2+ DLC. The Meteor Project is also an interesting reward. Even without knowing what the final reward will be (It's likely early access to Me 262s, but I'm partial to the idea of the Bf 109TL, which was jet variant planned as a backup in case the 262 design had issues. But I also generally like weird and obscure equipment as rewards. [Still hope the Heuschrecke 10 makes it into the game someday!]), it was the testbed of the token system for cross-DLC events.

Given how it often rains in this scenario that's a risky thing. Back when I first played the Catalonia mission in SCW I risked my planes like this on a airfield in snowstorm weather and became more wary of similar dangers, but I can see a world in which the carrier gets detected and sunk, with rain falling next turn and preventing planes form re-basing to land. At least there were auxiliary units, so potential loss was not as impactful, but with core ones I can see at least one player out there getting these unfortunate set of circumstances.
Stormchaser wrote: Mon Feb 21, 2022 8:29 pm That...was much easier than I had expected. I had assumed there would be at least an AA gun defending the airfield. The lack of Fighters was less unexpected, I had been working hard to shoot down any and all planes that came within range and was very careful with how and where I moved the transport planes.
One risk with the aerodrome is that sometime units can spawn in the northwest deployment zone and use that path, making it really hard to retreat anything but paratroopers. Plus there's the odd chance that units form London can go on an adventure west if the see a target in range and getting caught on the ground between the two sucks - one of my Kradschützen units from old time could testify. :)

First things first, pull the Italians back to Konitsa to try and save them from the trap they've barrelled into.

Image
Grenzer's new Hero came just in time, as I was wanting as many of these Italian Tanks as I can get my hands on.

Ending Prestige: 20455 (+2259)
Thoughts: Definitely a general difficulty drop in difficulty compared to our adventure on the British Isles or even the later parts of France. But that doesn't mean its without challenge. The Italians are positioned horribly, the Greeks assaulting your position with everything they have as fast as possible, your own forces are a few turns from the front, and the mountainous terrain domaining the middle makes positioning and traversing across the map difficult. Once you've rallyied and dealt with that initial mass push though, the tides quickly turn in your favor.
Probably shouldn't have brought along the air force though. They couldn't hit anything in the mountains and the lack of airfields plus infrequent snow meant they spent a lot of time sitting around. Need to remember to check for weather advice in the briefing...

Call it boring, but with no Bonus Objectives or anything I decide to take it easy and let them come to me.
One unfortunate thing about running Auxillary Force I have noticed these last 2 Scenarios is that you still don't get access to allied equipment as Auxillaries like you could in SCW. I can understand why, but I do miss the flavor.

Ending Prestige: 21384 (+2197)
Thoughts: Valona is pretty much just an upscaled version of last Scenario in terms of parameters, except with no Bonus Objectives you have no real reason to leave the starting area you are supposed to defend.
Can confirm that Distraction on a plane does not work against Artillery underneath at least.

Closing Thoughts: Probably the most diverse array of Auxillaries so far. A mix a different needs, advances in available equipment, and a willingness to use old captured stock all contribute to that. Although even with that Infantry and Air Force have the lions share of seeing use.
Interestingly enough, I also ran an overall deficit in terms of Prestige. Although between a Prestige Dump and a Prestige Reset and how much I spend on Auxillaries, that's not too surprising at the end of the day.

Now for something a bit more serious.
I am going to be stopping this AAR here.
It is unfortunate, but a big part of why I had such long pauses between segments at times had less to do with being busy with other things, and more not being interested in continuing.
It's not that I don't like the game, and I have had fun. It's more about the fact that this Campaign build has gotten...stale I guess is the best word for it? The Auxillaries definitely deserve to be a Perk, as the extra units make everything so much easier, and even against experienced enemies all you have to do is use them in a more supporting role compared to your Core.
I will be keeping both the Core and Save File at the final turn of the last Scenario, in case I ever change my mind. And I have an idea at least for a couple other AARs that would be hopefully a bit more fun and exciting, and also more challenging, although I'm probably going to experiment and try out some settings to figure out just how I want to set it up.

Anyway, thanks for following along.
General Flasch, signing off.

Re: AO-General Flasch's Auxiliary Adventures

Post by Tassadar »

A shame, but perfectly understandable as sometimes a break, restart, or even fully dropping things are better than trying to pursue them further. I have this issue with my attempts to mod the game - between work, family, playing this game normally and all the other things I like doing for fun this ambition has died down a bit (I still have Discord bookmarked, but finding time to check is another story...). So thank you for taking the time to finish the single DLC, it at the very least gives some closure to the run, not everyone would take their time to do so!

Plus thinking about the actual rules of the auxiliary force trait, I agree that it alone is a bit difficult to keep the experience fresh. It remains a great enabler for special challenges (there are Wunderwaffe run missions I'd never finish without the auxiliary troops...), but I agree it could use some extra spice, such as giving each scenario a minor allied faction and allow to only pull the troops from its list. This would make things far more unique each mission and keep the interest up, as you'd never know what you're going to get. Who knows, with all the other DLC and tweaks to missions and perhaps even old traits, this run might one day find itself available for an interesting continuation, that is if after such changes the save file would remain usable.
