A solid German PP reserve. Clever :). You will need it in 1944.

Looks like Victor really wants Italy out of the war as soon as possible.

This turn US paratroopers jump. 101st landed on Corsica succesfully, but 82nd taken major 6 damage when landing, so here is our chance.
More landing crafts spotted near Sardinia.

Image

Availiable Italian ground and air units push forward in their effort to eliminate Calabria beachead - airborne divsion here destroyed and Indian infantry reduced to 2 steps.

Image

In USSR we keep retreating. Only couple of units are within soviet grasp, but I think it is better to risk unit or two, but keep proper ZoCs and make sure, that soviets adcance only one hex row per turn - not 2 rows.

More action in Italy - Free French troops land on Sardinia. They will likely get Cagliari as 5th surrender city rather then Reggio.

Much to my surprise Corsica still holds.

Image

Italians focus their attacks on FF armour and Indian infantry this time.

Image

More retreats in USSR, though in the north soviets get dangerously close to our lines (probably our line was hidden in FoW, so they could advance despite of ZoCs.

Image

In the south small axis minor force left at Vinnitsa to perform some delaying action.

Image

Central convoy spawned in port this turn, so only 8 damage here.

Image

And northern one is escorted, no attack.

Image

Meanwhile German PP reserve is near 700. Soon I am going to put them to good use.

Allies capture Messina and threat Palermo and Cagliari. I believe this 2 cities will be ones, which force Italy to surrender.

Image

Attacks against troops in Calabria continue anyway - destroyed Indian corps and depleted Australian one.

Image

If these unit's goal was to secure Reggio, they failed, but if they were landed only to reduce Sicilian supply from 5 to 3, then maybe it was worthy operation for allies.

As all axis troops are out of SW zone in the north, we will make a stand here. No soviet heavy units spotted, so probably nothing bad will happen if we stop our retreat for a while.

Image

In the south retreat continues - Dniestr river line will be our new defensive position.

With recent allied success at Cagliari and Palermo Italy going to surrender next turn for sure.

Image

But Italian troops have just enough time to finish off Australian infantry near Reggio. So technically we still have no allies in mainland Italy.

Image

More retreats in the East.

Image

Southern front prepare defenses on Dniestr line - we are going to make a stand here.

Image

Here is picture of France, reserve army and builds situation.
Our main goal for 1944 campaign will be total failure of operation Overlord.

Great AAR! I wonder if one or two good German MECHs from your reserve would have made any difference in Sicily?

for a couple of turns, but I am guessing Plaid has a different Strategy - e.g. Overlord, Allies have exhausted a lot of PP's in Italy for not that much gain

I would dearly love to know the Russian forces strength, I think this game will be decided by the size of that juggernaught

I don't think that sending one or two good units to Sicily is an answer - they will be bombed into very low readiness and do little good. Even worse, only 1 hex of Sicily can't be bombarded from the sea.

This turn Italy surrenders. Its quite expected and I am rather happy, that Italy survived into 1944.
Allies are well behind schedule in the MED.

Image

German PP income jumps above 160 (but oil gains are not that great. Or maybe this oil pull "feature" was fixed).

Image

There was no action itself during this turn, so I'd rather post little overview of axis positions and situation.

Northern and Central parts of Eastern front :

Image

Here Wehrmacht just stands defensively and no Soviet attacks happened yet. They lack heavy units and probably don't want to attack at all for now... But who know how long it will continue this way?

Southern wing :

Image

Here axis troops occupie Dniestr river line and rough terrain south of Lvov. Red Army attacks are expected here soon, maybe very this turn.

Italy :

Image

No allied troops in mainland Italy for now, but they will start to arrive soon. Basically I am going to make a stang at Gustav line, but where allies would actually land? Good side is that hexes north of Rome are in Central Europe weather zone, so no landing here, unitl fair weather. But when fair weather arrives, Victor will need his landing points for Overlord, so he will be little short of them.

Build queue. Lost of PPs were spent this turn to upgrade most of my units across the map, rest were used to purchase 2 more mechs and 1 armour. ~100 PPs kept as reserve.

so 18 Russian Heavy Units are missing and the Ruskies have 20 Air in total

even 18 Units at very high effectiveness will still need the West to do some work given the Axis Position, will the Axis run out of oil - that is I think the question

Oh the silence before the storm.

Imagine the 18 Soviet ARM and MECH blob with the air support either around Minsk or Vinnitsa. Ouch :D Luckily you have the reserves you have. But still with two (or three in the worst case) fronts to come German's blob of heavies in the east will so much smaller than Soviet's. Does Vokt find his aggressive side and be ready to sacrfice his units in the process. Plaid you have played him in the past. What do you think? Will he still play it safe and not want to lose too many Soviet units or is he ready really push and try to break Germans in the east?

Are you going to sail u-boats to harass operation Overlord landings? And pretty much sacrifice them in the process most likely. Any small hindrance to the operation might help you to achieve your "main goal for 1944 campaign" the "total failure of operation Overlord". And if you are lucky you might even get final survivability upgrade before the Overlord. Or are you going keep them in Atlantic and pick off PPs from Alies where you can?

Vokt is smart and experienced player, I am sure he will go all-out in the East, as it is his main chance to win this game.

About subs - I will keep them in Atlantic. Again, I am pretty sure, that Victor will properly cover his landings with navy and airforce and it will be waste of subs.

If the success of the Overlord hangs in the balance and you really are aiming as your main goal to thwart the expansion of the upcoming beachhead, having the subs close by just might worth it. With your 7(?) subs you could potentially block some routes of the second wave of troop transports. Just to delay the arrival of those troops some.

Just my 2 cents. Anyway good luck for '44!

With active ASW search feature Channel will be swept from subs before landings even start.

In our past game Victor tried to do what you say and results were very sad for Kriegsmarine.

Another peaceful turn.

Allies land on Crete, which is empty after Italian surrender, and British armour lands in empty Reggio.

Image

No attacks all across the eastern front.

Image

Image

Image

French command prepares for allied landing. Soon they will receive some armour and more mechs.

Image

All subs are heading to ports for final level 6 upgrades and necessary repairs.

Another quiet turn :

Red Army stays possive while we reinforce Lublin area with more corps :

Image

Image

More shore bombardments and landings on Italian tip. It will take long time for these troops even to reach Gustav line.

Image

Some shore bombardments in France, while Luftwaffe arrives to support our planned campaign here.
My sub attacked transport, which supposed to be a mech (3 ground attack) for reasonable -3. Lets see how many damage sub will suffer from RAF bombers.

This turn my subs suffered reasonable damage (12 steps) from allied bombers and destroyers.

Now they need some repairs aswell as upgrade (just discovered submarines level 6).

Image

Now switched my labs from naval to infantry and armour for total 4 4 3 0 2. Still want to grab some valueable techs before summer campaign starts.

Image

In the east mud weather with fair weather in central Europe, so I got really good hit vs soviet armour (note odds - thats why I don't deploy armour for western front at all).

Image

Image

Also muddy weather means probably no soviet attacks this turn aswell.

Image

My forces in Italy and France are constantly bombarded by allied air and naval units, but nothing, what we can't repair for now.

Why not USSR attack in winter ? They have advantage in winter ! I think USSR playing a little bit too conservative this time . Time is running out for Allies ...... :)
