Mery Christmas, Merry Christmas :D.

BTW I don't think that leaving Libya virtually undefended in this game is not a trap. IMO Morris just figured that he will concentrate on defence of Italian mainland without doing anything in Africa.

Turn 27 - 2nd Feb 1941 - Mud/Snow

Production

UK - 43
USA - 26
USSR - 58

Total 127 PP

Tobruk attacked, expecting the counterattack now!

Turn 28 - 22nd Feb 1941 - Snow / Severe

Production

UK - 43
USA - 26
USSR - 58

127 PP (-)

Tobruk falls, surprised the DAK haven't intervened. Italian fleet has attacked, at least two subs so far.

Image

Turn 29 - 14th March 1941 - Clear / Mud

Production

UK - 46 PP + 18 PP Convoy
USA - 30 PP
USSR - 69 PP

Total - 145 PP (+18)

Advancing on Benghazi now, where is the DAK?

Italian subs cause minor damage, British CV, reduced to 1 Step has to retire North to Greece to avoid being sunk.

Another DD built and we get the US lend lease one, we need more to counter the U-boats as despite getting a convoy through this time two are sunk. The British fleet may have to risk going into the Atlantic Sub hunting soon.

Turn 30 - 3rd April 1941 - Fair / Mud

Production

UK 46
USA 30
USSR 69

Total 145 PP (-)

Still no DAK encountered, Benghazi falls without a fight. My opponent is up to something.......

I wonder if the DAK has been evacuated to be used in Barbarossa?

Turn 32 - 13 May 1941 - Fair Weather

Production

UK - 41
USA - 30
USSR - 113

Total - 174

Barbarossa launched!

Germany advances deep into Russia without much in the way of opposition.

Zhukov is sent to help defend the centre, Tabukhin the North and Chuikov the South.

Forces are brought up from the rear to help form defensive lines but it will take a turn or two for any coherent lines are able to form.

In the St Georges Channel we lose a DD but also manage to destroy one this turn. Another DD is being built.

Image

Image

The Italian navy strikes just off Benghazi with an Italian BB being destroyed but the RN will probably lose one this time as well.

Image

Judging by the disposition of the German armour, looks like an early Case Blue is on.

I will try to build up a strong force around Vorenezh to try to cut this off.

Morris has got 5 TACs so hopefully his ground forces are not as strong as they might have been.

Barbarossa - disposition of forces after the invasion:

Turn 33 - 2nd June 1941 - Fair Weather

Production

UK - 43
USA - 35
USSR - 123

Total 201 (+27)

Barbarossa grinds on with dramatic gains for the Axis forces. There is almost nothing between the main German thrust near Minsk and Moscow itself.

The beginnings of a defensive line are forming in the North under Tobukin who is investing the Northern bank of the Daugavu River, he has a MEC, 2 Corps and 3 GAR so far to help hold this line.

Image

Zukhov is retreating in disarray but can hope to hold the line of the northern Dnepr with reinforcments that are due next turn.

In the South Chuikhov has also had to flee after his MEC unit took a battering but there is the beginnings of another defensive line along the Bug River, although the Germans have broken through so this may need to be abandoned.

3 MEC, 4 Corps and 6 GAR are in this theatre at the moment but we may need another leader as it's too large an area for Chuikov alone.

Popov is ordered to make ready to take command alongside Chuikov.

Image

The RN has had to retreat from the battle of the St Georges channel after losing a BB and another is trapped and may also be sunk this turn. The German Wulf packs are too numerous and elusive for the RAF to do much about as they try to support the surface vessels.

Image

Better news from the Med where another Italian BB is destroyed, the RN has taken heavy casualties though with one BB down to just 1 step fleeing towards Greece where it will hopefully avoid detection. The remaining RN BB has 9 steps and so hopefully will be able to survive the Italian navies vengeance.

Image

22nd June 1941 - Turn 34 - Fair

Production

UK - 43
USA - 35
USSR - 121

Total 199 (-2)

The Wulfpacks head out to take down a convoy that was being escorted by the lend-lease destroyer, they take the destroyer down too. The RAF is frustrated as every one of the 4 attacks launched on German SUBs is evaded. We have 2 DDs now in port with 3 being built, UK is currently resigned to building DDs for the next few months until they can take on the U Boat threat.

Barbarossa continues apace, the Germans are advancing so quickly that there is little chance of containing them. We are having to deploy GAR units to have some semblance of a defensive line, little chance of holding Moscow until even October at this rate.

My commanders continue to retreat as quickly as they can for fear of being wiped out.

Image

12th July 1941 Turn 35 Fair

Production

UK - 43
USA - 35
USSR - 117

Total - 195 (-4)

Soviet reserve released.

Managed to sink an enemy DD in the ongoing battle of the St Georges Channel, RN now has a full strength BB and half strength BB left with a couple of DDs in the Brtish waters or in port.

Tripoli falls without a fight, we need to clear the Med of Italian naval forces before we can consider an invasion of Italy or Southern France though. That won't be simple with what we have left in the area.

The Russians are struggling again to hold any semblance of a defensive line, although this turn with the release of the Russian strategic reserve they may just be able to put up some more coherent defence, for a turn or two at least.

Three new Russian tank units are deployed this turn around Moscow to at least make a bit of a fight for the capital. German units are likely to be in the Moscow area by September at their current rate of advance.

Image

Govorov is recruited to be sent to the far south to take command there next turn as all Russian leaders are concentrating all efforts on staying alive.

Image

As you can see Russian losses are high and Axis ones very low, remaining forces are getting low for Russia but increasing for the Axis.

Turn 36 - 1st August 1941 - Fair

Production

UK - 48
USA - 35
USSR - 110

Total 193 (-2)

Kiev and Kharkov fall.

Defences crumble once again in Russia as Kiev and Kharkov fall quite easily.

Image

I've managed to get another couple of half decent units ready to defend Moscow when the Germans feel like they want to attack it, probably in September at this rate.

The British now need to decide if they feel ready to try to invade Italy - I think the Italian navy is probably too strong for now though as the RN only has a BB, CV and a SUB in the Med currently.

US begins building DDs ready for when they join the war, 6 DDs will hopefully be enough to fend off the German SUBs. The German BBs both take some damage this turn in the Irish Sea as they knock a RN BB down to 1 step before it runs for port.

Turn 37 - 21st August 1941 - Fair

Production

UK - 48
USA - 35
USSR - 105

Total - 188 (-5)

The Russians now have a defence planned for Moscow, the Germans will be able to strike next turn but not in force until late September or early October.

Timoshenko holds Moscow with Zhukov commanding the Southern approach via Tula, between them they have a meagure force of 4 Armoured units, 1 MEC, 6 Corps and 4 GAR. All of these are green but most are at full strength.

In the South Govorov is now commanding in Stalingrad but as yet the defenders there are extremely thin on the ground, the Germans are probably not going to arrive before the end of October.

Russia prays for an early Rasputitsa this year to slow the fascists advance.

The British wait in N Africa for their Med CV to be repaired.

The RN is now pitifully weak around the home islands with just 3 full strength DD and the remaining BB likely to be sunk next turn as it is trapped and the RAF can do more than knock a few steps off the Germans SUBs.

Turn 38 - 10th Sept 1941 - Fair

48
40
107

195 (+7)

Relatively quiet turn, defenders prepare at Moscow whilst the Germans prepare their offensive.

We don't have enough forces in N Africa to attack Italy directly yet.

Turn 39 - 30-September 1941 Fair

Production

UK - 49 + 12 convoy
USA - 40
USSR - 103

Total - 192 (-3)

It looks like the German advance has halted ready for winter as they appear to be taking defensive positions using rivers to help blunt any soviet counter once the weather turns.

Moscow is relatively secure for now with Zukhov, Timoshenko and Chuikov defending a line from Orel to Yaroslav with 4 Armoured, 1 MEC and 7 Corps plus 2 Gar with another 2 Gar and 1 Corps in reserve around Ryazan.

The German advance in the South has turned to the oil-rich Caucuses which is a blessing on one hand as the Russian centre is nearly defenceless, with just a couple of units around Stalingrad and Vorenezh.

I have transferred a few units to defend Maikop along the line of the River Kuban, Vatutin is leading the defence with 4 units and the promise of more to come.

Image

The first British units will arrive to defend the oil fields at Baku soon and so I can send reinforcements up from that area. (note, hadn't realised you cannot do this!)

The Germans must be getting low on oil so it is important to hold the oil fields if possible.

Turn 40 - 20-Oct-1941 - Fair/Winter

Production

UK - 49
USA - 40
USSR - 101

Total - 190 (-2)

Leningrad and Sevastopol fall.

Germans halt their offense, time to get ready for a counter, I will wait until the winter becomes severe, time to build more units first.

Turn 41 - 9th Nov 1941 - Snow

Production

UK - 49
USA - 40
USSR - 123

Total 212 (+22)

The Siberian divisions are now available and Moscow is looking like it has enough forces to last at least until mid-1942 but doubtful they can hold against a prolonged assault.

We are producing enough units, mainly Corps now, so that a line from Moscow south can be formed as far as the Caucuses, but it will likely have a few gaps around Voronezh.

Image

In the Med we are planning to strike in Spring of 1942 once the US forces become available, an invasion of Vichy France might be possible.

Turn 42 - 29th Nov-1941 - Severe Winter

Production

UK - 49
USA - 40
USSR - 123

Total - 212 (-)

Continuing to build up defences around Moscow, may consider a limited counter attack soon.

All quiet elsewhere.

Turn 43 - 19-Dec-1941 Severe Winter

Production

UK - 49
USA - 58
USSR - 123 + 19

Total - 230 (+18)

Continuing to build defences, 3 more Corps are deployed and 4 GAR units to fill in some gaps.

I am considering deploying my armour around Voronezh to strike towards Rostov as a counter to see if I can trap the Germans at Stalingrad.

Image

UK and USA are stockpiling PP as not sure what we will need, hopefully enough DDs to at least escort the US forces to Europe!

Turn 44 8-Jan-1942 Winter/Severe

Production

UK - 49
USA - 67
USSR - 123

Total - 239 (+9)

Quiet, building up defences, 5 Russian Armoured units now ready to counter around Voronezh if the situation allows.

US Destroyers put to sea to allow the others to deploy. 1 German sub spotted.

Turn 45 - 28-Jan-1942 - Mud/Winter

Production

UK - 49
USA - 67
USSR - 123

Total - 239 (-)

Murmansk cut off.

The US invasion will launch next turn - probably go for the Med as stiff German forces in the N Atlantic, the UK forces may have to launch a diversionary operation.

Russian build up continues.

Turn - 46 - 17th Feb 1942 Winter/Severe

Production

UK - 49
USA - 67
USSR - 123

Total - 239 (-)

Limited counter manages to nearly recapture Kursk, the German defending GAR down to 2 steps.

US DDs scour the US Seaboard to search for u Boats, one is spotted but no others, 1 transport send across tentatively.

Turn 47 - 9th March 1942 Fair/Winter

Production

UK - 49
USA - 72
USSR - 133 + 53 (convoy)

Total 254 Total(+15)

The Atlantic is going to be running red soon as the Germans have 2 SUBS just off the US coast and a large fleet of 2 BBs and at least 3 DDs near the central North Atlantic. The US are escorting a large convoy with 3 DDs as a bluff to draw the German forces north whilst a single transport is testing the waters to the south of the Azores, with just a single DD.

The British have sent all 6 of their DDs to help out but it's going to be a hard fight.

Image

The British are not really strong enough to try for Overlord yet but it may be possible soon. If the Germans have committed everything to the Atlantic we can try next turn perhaps.

Kursk is retaken and the Russians drive on Karkhov, although it is more heavily defended and the winter will end soon so we may have to halt. The Russians should have launched their counter offensives earlier in the winter.

48 - 29th March 1942 - Mud/Winter

Production

UK - 49
USA - 72 + 73 convoy
USSR - 133

Total - 254

We lose 3 DDs and only sink 1 - 6 German SUBs, 2 DDs and 2 BBs remain.

The US carrier is reduced to 2 steps and their BB 5 steps.

The Allies have 1 SUB, 12 DDs in good order and another 2 damaged.

Minor skirmishes on the Eastern front as the front line advances.

Turn - 49 - 18th April 1942 - Fair

Production

UK - 49
USA - 72
USSR - 133

Total - 245 (-9)

Bad timing for the counter-attacks as fair weather means the Germans have managed to wipe out all 6 of the Russian tank units, for relatively little loss. Stalin is furious with Zukhov who is in a hospital bed and unlikely to recover until June.

Image

With Summer now coming the front is split.

Govorov commands the southern approaches to the Caucuses with 6 Corps and 10 GAR, his task is to at least delay German posession of the oil fields until 1943.

In the North Tolbikhin has 2 Corps and 2 GAR to defend the Northern approaches to Moscow, whilst Chuikhov defends the direct approach from the West with 6 Corps, 2 Shock MEC units and a GAR.

Moscow itself is defended by Timoshenko with his Corps, a Shock MEC, 3 GAR.

The Southern flank from Kursk is commanded by 2 MEC and 5 Corps.

On paper we have enough to hold Moscow for a good few months but it's unlikely we can hold until Winter comes to the rescue.

Image

The first US destroyer arrives in the MED, 3 more arrive shortly so we can then begin an invasion of either Southern France or Italy.

The Atlantic battle hasn't gone well, we've damaged a BB and DD quite badly but will lose more DDs ourselves this time.

May 8th 1942 Fair

Italians are evacuating Cagliari so our SUB there manages to hit them in port for 1 step.

US forces now into the Med, 4 DDs and 2 Corps in transports that can try to land in 2 turns. They will have the RN support of CV, BB, DD and a SUB with the 8th Army currently waiting at Tripoli. Still not decided whether to hit Southern France or Italy.

In the East Russia is hurting badly as a major German offesnive around Orel has done significant damage and we are having to withdraw forces to defend the capital or risk being surrounded. The 3rd and 4th Shock armies manage to wipe out a German Corps just West of Moscow but other than that propaganda victory we are on the defensive.

Image

The Germans have crossed the Don in force near Rostov threatening Stalingrad, the defenses along the line of the Don might as well not have been there the resistance they put up being so ineffective. Govorov is in hospital and Stalin is furious again.

There is a huge gap in the Russian defenses from Stalingrad north to Orel.

Turn 51 28th May 1942 Fair

Production

UK - 49 + 53 convoy
USA - 72
USSR - 126

Stalingrad falls. The entire south is looking extremely precarious with just a couple of Corps and 3 GAR now standing between the German might and the oil fields.

Partisans capture Lvov.

The US forces in the Med pick their landing sites just West of Marseilles, it will take another week or two until the British and other US forces are ready to join the invasion so a screen of 4 DDs is set up to protect the East flank of the landing beaches.

It is imperative that the enemy do not spot this invasion for at least one more turn.

Image

Moscow is coming under increasing pressure but holding reasonably firmly, although the full German forces have not yet been brought to bear. At the current rate as things stand Moscow cannot hold much longer than August at best.

Turn 52 - 17th June 1942 - Fair

Production

UK - 49
USA - 72 + 54 Convoy
USSR - 123

Total - 244 (-3)

Case Blue is on, in case I hadn't already worked that out!

Moscow and the Caucuses now severely under threat with little chance of holding out until the relief that Winter would bring.

Image

The US invasion will hit southern France and Dragoon can proceed next turn. The British will launch a limited Overlord in support if required to divert German forces away, although this is likely to be suicidal.

Turn 53 - 7th July 1942 - Fair

Production

UK - 49
USA - 72
USSR - 115

Total - 236 (-8)

Dragoon begins and Marseilles survives with 1 step, not a great start. The Free French are activated along with Vichy France.

Image

We have 2 units now on French soil with another 3 en route but they will get pushed back into the sea quite easily due to the failure to capture the city. BB, DD, CV and two Corps couldn't knock out the 5 step defending GAR even with the morale penalty.

May have to launch Overlord next turn in support.

Invasion into Tunisia goes well with the Mareth line being overrun.

Image

In the East Moscow is now starting to get surrounded and it will only hold a few more weeks at best, very unlikely to hold until even the Autumn rains.

No other coherent defence left anywhere, the Germans have captured two oil fields with just a MEC and and ARM unit left in their way of the main prize oil fields. Baku itself has a MEC and a Corps defending.

Image

Garrisoning cities now to slow down the advance so Russia isn't knocked out before 1943.

Turn 54 - 27th July 1942 - Fair

Production

UK - 50
USA - 73
USSR - 111

Total 234 (-2)

Moscow is surrounded and only 3 units now defend it - we killed a German Corps this turn which is another pyrrhic victory. Units are now being deployed to defend Baku and Omsk.

Image

Image

Dragoon is cancelled as the Germans have a full strength para unit in Marseille now that I cannot hope to dislodge, the US 1st Mech Corps is left to die with Devers in command while the British XXX Corps will suffer a similar fate but more quickly.

The remnants of the invasion force will land in N Africa and consider an invasion of Italy in 1943 once Tunisia is captured. We need to have naval dominance and hopefully once the remaining US fleet arrives from the US we can gain that.

We would then have 4 BB, a CV and 10 DDs in the region that should be sufficient to subdue the Italian Navy.

Overlord is being considered to support the Russians by drawing off some forces and also to take advantage of the fact that most Axis units are on the Eastern front - if we don't invade Europe before Russia falls then it will be nigh impossible. We decide not to go with Overlord this time around but possibly next turn.

Turn 55 - 16th August 1942 - Fair

Production

UK - 50
USA - 73
USSR - 103

Total - (-8) 226

1st Shock Army now defend Moscow and stand alone against the Axis horde that now surrounds the city. Their fate is sealed but the question is how long can they hold.

The Eastern most advance units of the Axis forces are now closing in on Omsk but the Rasputitsa will slow them down and hopefully winter will arrive before they can capture the city. Mech units are being built in time for the defence.

In North Africa there are now three US units ashore and the Axis have launched their own invasion to counter this threat. The US fleet in the Med is strong enough to sink an Italian transport and damage a German one as it gets ready to unload.

Image

The 8th army is closing in on Tunis so the odds are in our favour in this theatre at least.

Note to self don't forget to sell those Russian labs!

Wow, on a brief view things are looking rather grim for the Russians! If the Western Allies cannot draw about 50% of the German Forces West things will be really hard for the Allies to recover for a '43 or '44 campaign.

Turn 56 5th September 1942 - Fair

Production

UK - 50
USA - 73
USSR - 87

Total - 210 (-16)

Moscow falls.

Russians continue to retreat and build forces around Osmk with just 2 MEC units currently defending, but more being built. It is unlikely the Axis forces can arrive in sufficient force to threaten the city before winter so we should hold until 1943.

Tunis is down to 2 steps and another German transport sunk, the battle for the Med is intense and still in the balance however as there are 3 Italians SUBS that are proving elusive.

We have knocked one of their DDs down to 4 steps this turn and their BB is down to 7 steps.

2 more US DDs enter the Med this turn with a US CV near the straights of Gibraltar.

The Germans have reinforced Sicily with a SS Mec unit.

We are escorting a 90 point Russian convoy with 6 DDs, these may be the final points the Russians get and could prove invaluable. German SUBs are in the area though.

Total - 201 (-9)

Meretskov commands the defence of Omsk with 4 MEC, 3 Corps and 2 GAR currently forming his army. The Axis forces probably won't reach the area in sufficient force before winter arrives so he has time to build more defences.

Chuikov commands the defence of Baku with a MEC, a Corps and 2 GAR and likewise the Axis forces are not close by.

In the Med the Italian navy retreats, we sink a BB.

Casablanca falls to the free French.

Tunis falls to the 8th army, we will be able to invade Italy in spring 1943 now and this time are in a better place with aerial forces within range to support.

More fighters and bombers are ordered by USA and GB to reinforce the Med.

Turn 59 - 4th November 1942 - Mud!

Production

UK - 54
USA - 77
USSR - 71 + 19

Total - 202 (+3)

Mud slows down the Axis forces, giving time to build up defences around Omsk.

Partisans capture Orel.

Consolidating our position in North Africa ready to strike Italy once Spring arrives and Overlord can also launch.

Sorry for the delay.

Turn 60 - 24th November 1942 - Fair/Mud

Production

UK - 54
USA - 77 + 18
USSR - 71

Total - 202 (-)

Not much to report, Italian navy attacks US invasion forces near Tunis and knocks the transport down to 5 steps. US navy knocks a Luftwaffe fighter down to 7 steps on Sardinia and minor damage to defending Italian forces on Sardinia and Sicily.

All quiet on the Eastern front!

Turn 61 - 14th Dcember 1942 - Severe Winter

Production

UK - 54
USA - 77
USSR - 71

Total - 202 (-)

North Africa is now totally in Allied hands. Italian SUBs make a counter all 4 of them and weaken the US CV so it has to retire to port. DDs bombard the coast of Sicily but have little effect.

Russians mount a small counter attack but losses are light on both sides.

Partisans are now starting to take a few Russian cities back but it won't last.
