Need Advice on Depth, etc.

Post by Gerry4321 » Sat Aug 09, 2014 11:21 am

Hello All:

Have many tactical games I don't play as they are either too complex (e.g. Combat Mission) or too abstract (e.g. Conflict of Heroes). Hoping this one might be in the middle.

I am a former ASL player. Can you give me an idea of depth in the game please.

1) I realize it will not have 8 armor values but how does it handle armor thickness versus penetration by an AT Gun.
2) What are infantry options for moving (thought I saw on one video were there was a Run and Hunt option).
3) Do squads take casualties in numbers or is it some kind of step reduction system?
4) It does look a little "cartoonish" from screenshots I have seen. Does that feeling go away during play?
5. Buildings look strange, v. tall and skinny? I assume there are no levels like in ASL?

Thanks in advance,

Gerry

I can answer some of them
2.Infantry can move fast or hunting.
3.infantry squads do take casualties in numbers so you could have infantry units with 2 out of 5 men still alive
5. All buildings have the same effect on cover if that's what you mean.

1.) there are sides considered when dealing with armor, as well as AT capability of the guns, yes of course. It is handled automatically by the game and represented to you as a % chance to penetrate.

4.) I rather like the look and feel of BA1, so I venture that you will get used to it rather quickly.

guardsman:

No clue what you are up to. Thankfully there are others on the forum that take a question as a question.

Gerry.

I am sorry if you have taken offence, albeit I cannot see how. All that I have done is to offer you a game perhaps during which we could have conversed about the issues you raised. My second post was directed towards the wit of my fellow gamer JCB 989 in his post. May I suggest you read it.

Thanks for the game offer but I don't have the game. That's why I posted some questions.

In my experience the game can be as tactical as you make it. You would perhaps enjoy the modified maps which have been created by gifted individuals who play this game. In these mods they have tried to recreate actual battles and campaigns. Perhaps does not have the rule book of ASL but it is a very good game and well worth the cost considering the extra scenarios generated by PBEM. Buy it you will not be disappointed.

The buildings look very tall and skinny in relation to the other objects.

I came across something about space being abstracted, IOW each square is not the same size as in when you get out to 4 squares versus just out to two squares. So maybe that is the reason the buildings look like they do.

It's growing on me as I play the demo. Busy the next few weeks so I will keep dappling and reading. I may wait for BA2.

Take care,

My daughter 'surprised' me with the game this past Christmas, the first time in 18 years she ever considered buying me a computer game :).

At first I was like thanks but inside I didn't think I would like it since it had been out a while and it never seemed to excite me. Once I began playing it I found I really enjoyed it. I bought every expansion pack and played them all. It's easy to learn, it's fun, it's not too complicated yet not simple either and it plays quick. It is just a good game IMO. I'm hoping BA II will be just as much fun.
