Chariotfest
With two forum competitions nearing their ends, can I canvas opinion on a new one with a different theme?
Chariotfest is designed to dust off some little used armies and thrust them together amidst the thunder of hooves and the trundle of wheels.
Basically the army choice is restricted to either one of 5 armies operating around 525BC which had 6 or more heavy chariots (or similar) or one of 6 armies operating about 55BC which had 8 or more light chariots.
Chariotfest 1
400 point armies with a minimum of 6 heavy chariots (or scythed chariots or war wagons).
Heavy Chariots
• Early Achaemenid Persian (Cyrus)
• 26th Dynasty Egyptian
• Kyrenean Greek (Early)
• Early Carthaginian
• Classical Indian
Chariotfest 2
400 point armies with a minimum of 8 light chariots.
Light Chariots
• Gallic (Early Lowland)
• Gallic (Early Hill Tribes)
• Ancient British
• Ancient British (Cassivellaunus)
• Early Scots-Irish
• Caledonian
I propose paired games to balance weaker armies like the Scots-Irish. But to avoid too many games, I'd use a knock out tournament structure, possibly with a mini 'group stage' depending on demand. That would give between 2 and 5 pairs of games per player depending on progress.
What do you think? Would you like to take part? Do you want to go for heavy chariots or light chariots?
If there is interest, I'd propose to start after either or both of the 279BC and 5th Century Byzantine competitions finish.

These are two very different categories; it should be very interesting.

What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

Re: Chariotfest
Fantastic idea, Richard. I like both, but would have a slight preference for the speedier, more chaotic light chariots.

Re: Chariotfest
Count me in!
My preference is for the heavies. The armies are aesthetically appealing (particularly Egyptians and Persians) and have an interesting, diverse range of units. The light chariot armies, by contrast, are all just variations on a Celtic theme. And I have my doubts about the historicity of light chariots in FOG - I suspect that they were just 'battle taxis' for noble warriors, rather than fighting platforms.
I'd prefer larger battles - 600 or even 800 points - but if the consensus is for 400, that's fine.

Re: Chariotfest
Thanks for the comments. No turnips, but it does include Cyrus's slightly questionable mobile towers to make up the numbers and along with the scythed chariots to neatly slice any turnips that do happen along!
The reason for 400 points is that it maximises the proportion of chariots in the armies. Depending on the list 400 or 600 both give 6 heavies and 800 only increases it to 7.

Chariotfest Launch
Thanks for the feedback. I think there is enough interest to launch and the balance of opinion favours the heavy chariots this time. We'll go for a groups and tournament 'world cup' structure so everybody gets at least 4 games. Depending on how many people want to play, we’ll go for 8 forming 2 initial groups of 4 or 12 forming with 4 initial groups of 3.
So far, I have 7 names down, Ulysisgrunt, MikeMarchant, Londo, iandavidsmith, LordNytram, Jackal1917 and me. Could I have preferences please (ideally from the first 8 armies on the list in case we don’t get 12 players). There is room for 5 more players on a first come first served basis.
Please include preferences. Do remember that all games are paired, so don’t worry if you have a poor army as your opponent will have to use it too.
Armies:
1. Early Carthaginian 1
2. Kyrenean Greek (Early)
3. 26th Dynasty Egyptian 1
4. Classical Indian 1
5. Early Achaemenid Persian (Cyrus) 1
6. 26th Dynasty Egyptian 2
7. Mauryan Indian
8. Kyrenean Greek
9. Early Achaemenid Persian (Cyrus) 2
10. Early Carthaginian 2
11. Kyrenean Greek (Later)
12. Classical Indian 2
Rules:
All matches are a pair of games with armies reversed on the second game. Please try to play paired games simultaneously if at all possible. The overall match result (1 point for a win ½ point for a draw) is taken from the net result of both paired matches. So a loss with 85% to 100% and a win 100% to 75% counts as a simple win (1 point at +10%), making overall draws very unlikely. In the mini groups the casualty difference is applied like ‘goal difference’ if points are equal.
You can be as flexible as you like on army selection between battles, provided you use a minimum of 6 heavy chariots (or scythed chariots or war wagons) in every battle.
Groups for 12 Players
Group A (paired games against other opponents)
Early Carthaginian 1
Kyrenean Greek (Early)
26th Dynasty Egyptian 1
Group B (paired games against other opponents)
Classical Indian 1
Early Achaemenid Persian (Cyrus) 1
26th Dynasty Egyptian 2
Group C (paired games against other opponents)
Mauryan Indian
Kyrenean Greek
Early Achaemenid Persian (Cyrus) 2
Group D (paired games against other opponents)
Early Carthaginian 2
Kyrenean Greek (Later)
Classical Indian 2
1 Winners of Group A versus 2nd in Group B
2 Winners of Group B versus 2nd in Group C
3 Winners of Group C versus 2nd in Group D
4 Winners of Group D versus 2nd in Group A
Winners of 1 versus Winners of 3
Winners of 2 versus Winners of 4
Final
Optional 3rd/4th
Groups for 8 Players
Group A (paired games against other opponents)
Early Carthaginian 1
Kyrenean Greek (Early)
26th Dynasty Egyptian 1
Classical Indian 1
Group B (paired games against other opponents)
Early Achaemenid Persian (Cyrus) 1
26th Dynasty Egyptian 2
Mauryan Indian
Kyrenean Greek
Winners of Group A versus 2nd in Group B
Winners of Group B versus 2nd in Group A
Final
Optional 3rd/4th
PS A Special prize for the maximum chariots used in a battle by both players. By my calculations the most you could get to is about 8 heavies and 5 lights for one army. So could we manage 20 chariots in a game?

No, if you want them, they are yours - Army 4 (Classical Indian 1). I'm trying to keep it simple. I'll go for Carthage myself, that's Army 1.

I'll take Early Achaemenid Persian (Cyrus) 1, please Richard.
An old favourite of mine, though they're rarely successful for me.

Was looking at the Indians,
So 4 heavies and 2 wagons, check!
Fill the army out with anything else? Including 8 gorram elephants??? Or is that the heights of cheese-mongery???
