You will play everyone at least once over the span of three rounds. Pairings will even out in the long run.

Londo wrote: Sat Feb 23, 2019 4:14 am It becomes harsh for Dacia when the Legionaries and Praetorians finally get into action. Makes you wonder why the Romans aren't leading with the heavy infantry, instead of asking Auxilia to stand up to Sarmatian lancers in the open!
Roman generals don’t play FoG  . Standard procedure is to commit the most valuable troops last, if at all. Legionaries are strategic assets not easily replaceable, especially in a period when only Roman citizens can become legionaries. Caracalla extended citizenship to all free men in 212 which drastically changed the makeup of the legions in the following decades; this led to the rise of the Illyrian military elite within the army as Italy faded as a recruitment ground (and losing its martial traditions) in favour of the Danube frontier area. Later in the century, under the ‘barrack emperors’, legionary command was closed to the traditional senatorial class (further dissociating the old Italian elite from the army) and the legions themselves in the chaos of the mid century crisis became more vestigial administrative units rather than fighting units.

Last two results of the round:

Result for Issus
Edmund (Romans) 48/80 defeats allendeuce (Romans) 89/85
Edmund 10.5
allendeuce 6.0
Jim played it defensively keeping everything he could behind the river while sending all his cavalry around the enemy rear. This looks a clever strategic ploy, but it means you don't get many of the marker points, leaving you playing catch up on the score - all careful scenario planning by fogman I suspect. In the event it also allowed Severus to gobble up markers with his front line troops whilst releasing all his cavalry and some of his reserve infantry to counter the cavalry threat. As a result, when it arrived, the flanking cavalry couldn't break through. Thanks for the game Jim.

Result for Mons Grampius
Edmund (Romans) 62/68 defeats IMC (Caledonians) 103/98
Edmund 10.5
IMC 9.1
It took a turn too long for the tribesmen to break the markers, allowing the legions to arrive before the auxillia broke. A turn sooner and it could have gone the other way. Thanks for the game Ian.

the markers are used to force the players to attack or defend a certain position, according to historical patterns. If the Severan legions did not attack frontally, Niger would just pull his troops out to avoid the encirclement and there would have been no battle at Issus.

Parthians (Edmund) 56/67 vs Sasanians (Enakan) 58/58
Edmund 10
Enakan 8.4
The was something inevitable about the way the Persian 2ic charged boldly in won his combat and immediately fell off his horse! Morale faltered on the Persian left and the line looked distinctly wobbly and I'd have happily conceded a draw. But somehow, the left hand units hung around and to my surprise it was the superior Sasanians rather than the average Parthians that eventually crumbled. Number count or better dice? I'm not quite sure how, but I'll take the result. Well played Paul.
