Round 16: Dawn of a Dynasty
By 393, the tetrarchic system was in full operation with two Augusti and two Caesars (Diocletian and Galerius in the East, Maximian and Constantius in the West). But it broke down in 305 with the retirement of the senior Augusti. Dynastic tendencies in the military elevated Constanstinus, son of Constantius, and Maxentius, son of Maximian to strong men in the West. Lacking the collegial spirit of the first generation, civil war was inevitable. And it was the house of Constantius that was to emerge as the winner.
----------------------
CALLEVA ATREBATUM 296
A separatist regime had developed in Britain in 286 in the aftermath of the rebellion of Carausius that Maximian, busy with the Rhine frontier, was unable to put down. Constantius was finally given the task of subduing the separatist province. In 296 he managed to land two divisions; the one under his praetorian prefect Asclepodotus carried the day at the battle Calleva Atrebatum against the forces of Allectus.
-----------------------
MILVIUS BRIDGE 312
After securing the Rhine, Constantine marched into Italy, brushed aside Maxentius’ forces in northern Italy and quickly approached Rome. Maxentius came out of the Aurelian walls for one of the decisive battles of Roman history.
