CAESAR'S CAMPAIGNS IN GAUL

Post by maximvs »

Here are the latest scenarios I have put together, this time following Julius Caesar's campaigns in Gaul.
It is my intention to cover each of the major battles he writes about in his commentaries. The entire campaign lasted from 58BC to 51BC.

I will add further battles to this post, in chronological order, once they are completed.

Although I have playtested each game (to the point where I think it is possible for each side to win against the AI), I would still appreciate readers' comments and suggestions.

Caesar in Gaul 52BC - 5 Alesia LINK: http://www.mediafire.com/?zq1n0wzzdmw
The final showdown as Vercingetorix attacks the Roman lines from inside whilst his brother Vercassivellaunus attacks from outside.

Although hostilities continued into the following year as Caesar mopped up isolated tribes who failed to show sufficient enthusiasm for Roman rule, no further significant battles were fought. So this wraps up the series which I hope will provide you with as much fun to play as I've had putting them together.

Disappearing units

Post by Sull51 »

I was playing Caesar in Gaul 58BC - 2 The Helvetii (player=Helveti, AI = Romans) when in the middle of the game during an AI turn his units disappeared although you saw numbers flashing indicating the game was continuing. After the Ai moved I saved and loaded the game and the units reappeared. This happened twice
At first I thought a case of too many units on the map for the graphics card to handle, but the second time there was not that many units left.
All three scenarios were entertaining

MAXIMVS wrote:Yes, that's wierd. It has happened to me once whilst playing, but I can't remember which battle, and it was just one unit.

It sounds like a graphics glitch. But as you say you did, any time I get something strange happening, I always save the game and then restart. That seems to fix any problems. Glad you're enjoying the battles.
If you see this again, please post a note in the support forum so the issue can be tracked. Thanks.

fine...caesar didn't know the FoG rules though
in a former battle, i won simply by getting all the roman light units to evade off map; so one must bring them in normal battle position ASAP...or play with free deployment

MAXIMVS wrote:In creating these scenarios I'm always torn between keeping strictly historical (given that these isn't much detail anyway) and creating an enjoyable game.
YES Please keep them as historical as possible: using caesar's (admittedly fast-and-loose with the details) accounts of the Gaulic wars and Civil Wars adds a GREAT dimension to the scenarios.

People who want a less historical scenario can always mod it however they would like.

I vote strongly: keep historical battles / deployments/ terrains as accurate as possible

Is there any idea if Slitherine / matrix will package some of the GREAT historical scenarios in future updates to FoG? Would love to see them added to my game next time I download the latest patch (Im very computer illiterate and so dont tend to be able to successfully add scenarios unless they are in self-extracting updates lol)
