Gendarme special instruction in various lists - Karsten

Post by rbodleyscott »

This special instruction is found in several lists:
 Minima marked * only apply if any Gendarmes or more than 6 bases of men-at-arms with mixed equipment are fielded.
Does it apply if gendarmes from elsewhere in the list are used - eg. Spanish?

If not, should we clarify the situation by calling the Gendarmes "German, Austrian or Bohemian" or something like that.

This will need to be tailored to each relevant list. It also needs to be corrected in Appendix 1.

No, it should only apply to the "Germans".

In which case we need to call them German gendarmes, German men-at-arms etc.

But presumably they were not all Germans, so what should we call them in each such list?

Erh.. good question can't we get around that and maybe say that if any Gendarmes marked with an * are used then...? Might be easier then to find a fitting term.

Would prefer not to use asterisks (or equivalent) for something different from usual. It will confuse the punters.

Hmm, maybe forgo naming them and just excluding Italian, Spanish or Burgundian Gendarmes might work then? Alternately one could call them Imperial, Feudal or Mercenary Gendarmes (although 'Feudal' is a rather medieval term it still aptly describes many of them) without the need to specify the 'nationality'.

The Gendarmes concerned usually get top billing in the lists.

In which case there may be less confusion if reference is made "to the first troop-type category line of the list" or "Gendarmes troop type referred to in the first ____ lines. . . " rather than national or ethnic identifiers. I'm not suggesting trying to identify list line numbering farther down the page.

Cheers,

Mike

I think this is the way to go.
