Yellow brick road

Post by MatthewP »

Yellow!! Just seems to be one of those colours that never seems to work well. Always runny and takes multiple coats.
Does anyone know of a good make of yellow paint?

white undercoat, then yellow, then finish with an orange ink wash.

Not quite "yellow" but it works for me.

First Sienna (dark yellow) then yellow
mix your yellow with a little white to make it less transparent

Start with a dun or tan color, then ink and highlight with yellow.

Some people have had luck with mixing some metallic into the base coat also to keep any darker primer or other color from bleeding through.

Matthew

Try mustard colour - usually much thicker than the bright yellows.
If you must have bright then yellow ink on top of a bright (skull) white works well.

Several possibilities and some of them already mentioned:
1) Prime or reprime (if needed) in white and then yellow (it can be very annoying to clean every yellow part)
2) Use the darksun yellow from Citadel foundation. It really covers anything without needing a very thick coat. Then use another brighter yellow for lights
3) Start with ocre as the base coat and put lights with additions of white and yellow

These variations will go from brighter to darker and the first one can be combined with the third one

I vote for the GW foundation colours too. One coat does it with 'proper' yellow highlights

This is the way i do yellow and it looks good

GW colors by the way

White spray under coat, Golden Yellow, then Orange ink, then dry brush with Bad Moon yellow (will require acouple of coats to look right) then highlight with bad moon yellow mix with skull white (2 parts y to one part w) if needed. Most of the time the highlight is not needed.

Here are some examples

Vallejo paint.
Start with Dun , then flat yellow, followed by either lemon or light yellow. That is from a black undercoat. I have also used the GW method on 40K stuff. White undercoat, Flat yellow, then wash (quite heavy) of 1/2 burnt sienna & 1/2 yellow wash, highlight (when fully dry) in flat yellow, then highlight in Lemon or light yellow.

Examples of lots of yellow in these old pics, all from the first black undercoat method:
