Gs 3.1

All usual settings.

Fog of War IS on by the way, we restarted the game after I noticed it hadn't been checked after the first turn.

After Poland we capture Holland fairly quickly without much if interest, then the phoney war settles in over the winter of 39-40.

Manstein is recruited to lead the assault on Belgium and France as soon as winter ends and the weather allows.

There's a bit of bombing of the UK with Norwich taking a beating but they deserve it.

19th March 1940

Fair Weather

PPs

GER 76
ITA 8

Belgium falls in one turn with only 4 steps lost for the Wehrmacht - we had to deploy the paras to take Brussels though, but they emerge unscathed. Next France!

Turn 12

8th April 1940

Fair Weather

Production
Germany - 78
Italy - 8

The German blitzkrieg is not as quick as hoped, Lille is captured but the French are defending in depth with mainly GAR so will be a long slogging match.

Turn 13

28th April 1940

Fair

Production

Germany - 79
Italy - 8

French launch a counter agttack vs a weakened (7 step) ARM at Lille and reduce it to 1 step so this unit withdraws to the German border.

We manage to destroy the BEF and French ARM with its leader so no strong French units remain other than the Corps defending Paris. This is fortunate as one of my MEC units is reduced to 4 steps, so it may survive but will be touch and go.

Reasonable progress into France, the enemy will struggle to replace losses to maintain double line of defence now.

Turn 14

18th May 1940

Fair

Production

Germany - 79
Italy - 8

As feared the French counter again and a German MEC was destroyed! The German ARM that was reduced to 1 step begins to rebuild in a safe location.

Other than that the Wermacht grinds on, Blitzkrieg now in slow motion.

Being careful not to take too many losses we get to within 2 hexes of Parid.

British Convoy recduced to 2 steps by German submarine activity in the Atlantic.

France now has no real chance of any counterattacks with just GAR forces and 1 Corps in Paris.

German Luftwaffe units will need to redeploy to help capture Paris as they are still located on the Dutch border.

Turn 15 - 7th June 1940 - Weather Fair

Production

Germany - 80
Italy - 10

Slow progress this turn, wiped out 2 GAR but also 2 German units down to 1 step, the French are running out of units.

British convoy destroyed.

We order a new Armoured unit.

Oil 378 (end of turn) Need to get this up as high as we can ready for Barbarossa.

Image

I've missed a turns worth of notes, but:

Turn 17 - 17th July 1940 - Weather Fair

Production

Germany - 80
Italy - 21

Italy joins the war.

Paris should fall next turn, surrounded with little hope of succour.

Image

The Italians consider their move.

379 Oil (+1)

Turn 18 - August 6th 1940 - Weather Fair

Production

Germany - 80
Italy - 21

Total = 101

Paris falls, casualties higher than hoped.

Image

Too late for Sealion this year probably. We turn East, deploy ready for Barbarossa 1941 but keep a few German units near the Channel to hopefully confuse our opponent.

Italians move to the border with Egypt, Italian Armour comes over the Med with a German Armour deployed to Munich possibly to send the Afrika Korps.

Turn 19 End August 1940

Quiet.

Oil - 383

Too late for Sealion so we'll get ready for early Barbarossa in 1941 as soon as the weather improves.

I won't bother with the Balkans as that's just going to slow me down.

Built a MEC.

Turn 20

15-Sept-1941

Production

Germany 91
Italy 23

The Allies attack Syria so I'm sending Italians into Egypt whilst their forces are otherwise engaged.

Bombing Britain whilst moving main forces for Barbarossa.

Turn 22

Oil 371

Italians continue to advance in North Africa, closing in on Alexandria.

Turn 23 - 14th Nov 1940 - Mud!

Production

Germany - 109
Italy - 23

OIl 383 (+12)

Turn 24 - 4th Dec 1940 - Snow

Production

Germany - 110
Italy - 25

Total - 135

Graziani loses his unit and injured in N Africa. Italians now looking decidedly weak and vulnerable in this theatre.

Not much else to report.

24th December 1940 - Snow

Production

Germany - 110
Italy - 25

Italians fail abysmally in North Africa, not sure why I trusted them without any German support. They'll lose another 2 units this turn as they've managed to get surrounded.

OIl 402

Jan 1941 - Snow

Not a lot going on, I decide to make elite Von Manstein's Armoured unit ready for Barbarossa. Plan to invade Russia early as weather permits.

Italians fall back in N Africa, can hopefully make a stand at Tobruk.

I transfer some air units to the Balkans, may try to capture Yugoslavia before Spring.

Oil 492 (+90)

Not much to report for the next few turns, Italians pushed back in Africa, Italian air force sent over to help.

Turn 28 - 22nd Feb 1941 - Mud / Snow

Oil 497

Preparing for Barbarossa and building forces up ready to hit Yugoslavia.

Turn 29 - 14 March 1941 Weather Fair/Snow

Production

Germany - 112
Italy - 27

Total 139

We now how 6 SUBs deployed so can start hunting in the North Atlantic, but it will take a couple of turns for all units to be in the right position for this to happen.

DOW on Yugoslavia. We need a quick victory here to allow us to deploy ready for Barbarossa as soon as the weather allows.

Von Rundstedt leads the attack with an ARM division, 2 MEC and 2 Corps plus support from a Hungarian MEC and 3 Corps and a Romanian Corps. Air support is 2 TAC plus 3 assorted air units from the minor Axis powers.

Belgrade survives with 1 step.

Image

Possible Barbarossa next turn, weather permitting but I may have to delay another turn to allow time for my forces to properly assemble.

Oil 507 (+10)

Not really enough oil!

Turn 30 - 3rd April 1941 - Fair/Mud

Production

Germany - 112
ITaly - 27

Total - 139 PP

Oil 493 (-14) this is due to moving all units forward to the Russian frontier in readiness for good weather next turn so Barbarossa can begin.

Yugoslavia knocked out.

Bad luck this turn as a SUB is wiped out as an enemy DD bounced into it, we have hit a RN BB down to 4 steps and hit a convoy as SUBs now given the go ahead for general open warfare in the Atlantic.

Turn 31 - 23rd April 1941 - Fair/Snow

Production

Germany -115
Italy - 27

Total 142 (+3)

Poor weather still prevents Barbarossa.

Relatively quiet turn.

540 Oil (+47)

Turn 32 - 13-May 1941 Fair

Production

Germany - 115
Italy - 27

Total - 142 (-)

Barbarossa!

Oil 588 (at start +48)

Subs attack a British BB and knock it down to 1 step.

Manstein commands Army Group centre and is being given priority for supplies.

He commands 3 Panzer Divisions incuding an SS divsion, 3 MEC divisions and 4 Corps.

Rommel commands Army Group North, his task is to support Manstein and to cover his northern flank. He commands a panzer divison, 2 MEC divisions and 3 Corps.

In the South Rundstedt's task is to drive on Stalingrad and help cover Mansteins southern flank whilst trying to reach the oil in the Caucuses if possible.

He commands 2 Panzer divisions, 1 MEC diviosn an 4 Corps with most of the Romanian, Hungarian and Bulgarian forces in support.

Luftwaffe support is 3 TAC and 3 FTR units.

Initial attacks are reasonably successful in the centre with Kaunas and Vilna taken but progress is slow in the south.

Oil at end of turn - 500 (won't last long!)

Image

Turn 33 - 2nd June 1941 - Weather Fair

Production

Germany - 120
Italy - 29

Total - 149(+7)

Oil at start 539 (-49) - 11 turns worth!

Barbarossa progresses well in the North with Manstein and Rommel both getting praise from Hitler for their rapid gains. Rommel captures Minsk injuring a Russian general in the progress and resistance in this theatre is being crushed mercilessly. The Russians do seem to be forming up a defensive line behind the Dnepr however so we may need to regroup and resupply shortly.

In the South Rundstedt has been summoned to the Fuherbunker to explain his tardy performance. Chiesenau has still not fallen (1 step GAR remains) and the Russians are forming good defence around the Southern Bug and Odessa. If it weren't for the fact that the Southern theatre is being given a lower priorty and therefore less equipment and supplies then Rundstedt would probably be back in Berlin by now filing paperwork!

Rommel has asked for more forces to help shore up the flanks of his ever longer supply chain, these are granted as more Panzer units are ordered but the oil supplies are diminsihing at an alarming rate already.

The first Russian units are surrounded 2 GAR SW of Lvov.

Russian casualties are heavy but not excessive and they've plenty more where they came from!

Don't worry, troops in the South are at very low ORG, so it shouldn't be too hard to obliterate them. The problem is that you didn't manage to destroy too many MECHs. I'm surprised that your Luftwaffe is so weak! 3 TACs is definitely not enough at this stage IMO.

Italy - 29

Total - 150 (+1)

Starting Oil 484 (-55)

Rommel and Manstein grind east taking Riga this turn and crossing the Dnepr.

Image

In the South Rundstedt has made some desperate progress after the threats from Hitler and broken through the Russian defences around Chisenau but losses have been higher than expected.

Oil depletion this time isn't quite as bad as before.

Turn 23 - 12 July 1941 - Fair

Production

Germany 123
Italy 29

Total 152 (+2)

Oil 456 (-28)

Rommel and Manstein capture Bryansk, Smolensk and Gomel and threaten Moscow. The Russians have put up a defensive line however blocking the way to the Russian capital.

Image

In the South Rundstedt breaks through the Soviet lines and threatens Dnepropretrovsk.

Image

We are quite thin on the ground to defend the flanks so 3 Corps are requisitoned. Also as oil is low we need to build units that don't need the black gold, so Corps will be requisitioned more often from now on.

Large convoy intercepted in the Antlantic, we knock a transport down to 6 steps.

1st August 1941 - Fair

Production

Germany - 136
Italy - 29

Total - 165 (+13)

Oil 424 (-32)

The advance on Moscow slows a little as the advance MEC and ARM units led by Manstein and Rommel hit a wall of Soviet Corps. All available Luftwaffe units are transferred from the South to help in a coordinated strike on the capital over the coming months before the weather turns.

Another 5 Corps, 2 ARM and 2 MEC will be sent to this front to augment the existing forces in time for a major offensive in August and September.

Image

Elsewhere the southern front grinds on and a transport is sunk in the Atlantic.

Image

The African theatre is a lost cause now but Tobruk and Benghazi hold out another turn.

Oil is getting very low now but there will be enough to support the Autumn Typhoon on Moscow and we can then hopefully gain more oil over winter when a general halt will be called in the East.

End of turn oil 328 (-48) - 6 turns worth remaining.

Turn 37 - 21-Aug-1941 - Fair

Production

Germany - 135
Italy - 27

Total - 162 (-3)

Defences around Moscow stiffen and so it is now unlikely that Moscow can be taken before winter, we prepare to go on the defensive whilst whittling away at the Russian Corps that form the bulk of defenders.

In the South defences are sparser and Kiev is taken this turn, we will exploit the Russian build up in the North by sending some spare units south.

Image

We need more units to form a defensive line so Corps are now being given a priority regards building new units.

End of turn oil 278 (-50) - 5 turns

Turn 38 - 10-Sept-1941 - Fair

Production

Germany - 137
Italy - 28

Total - 165 (+3)

Advances are slow this turn as we get ready to go on the defensive.

Orel falls and another 3 Russian cities should fall next time.

Image

Still building Corps (3 more this time) ready to form a defensive line. We will be forced into the defensive in any case soon due to oil supplies dwindling, Case Blue is looking a necessity!

Oil 326 at start of turn - at end of turn oil 227 (Used 99) - Only enough for 2-3 turns!

Turn 39 - 30th Sept 1941 - Fair

Production

Germany - 138
Italy - 28

Total - 166 (+1)

Oil 274 (+47 produced)

Several Soviet cities fall this turn, 5 in total including the key city of Karkhov!

Odessa falls
Dnepropetrovsk falls - Govarov injured.
Karkhov falls
Kursk and Vitebsk captured too.

Image

We destroy a Corps and 2 GAR around Moscow, being careful now where we attack with a view to forming a defensive line.

In the south we have broken through the Russian defences and it looks clear as far as we can see with the exception of the Crimea which is stuffed full of mainly GAR units defending Sevastapol. For this reason we are only sending limited reinforcements to the South and concentrating on heading East rather than clearing the Crimean peninsular.

Production

Germany - 136
Italy - 28

Total - 164 (-2)

225 Oil (start) Production 47

Rebuilding, Stalino captured, a general halt is called throughout the front line in the East so we can form a defensive line as the weather deteriorates.

185 Oil used 40

Turn 41 - Fair/Snow 9-Nov-1941

230 Oil (47 produced)

Production

Germany - 138

Total - 166 (+2)

Consolidation continues this turn.

The Finns have been surrounded as they advanced East, so am sending a Corp or two across if we can manage it.

Turn 42 - 29th November 1941 - Winter/Mud

Production

Germany - 139
Italy - 28

Total 167 (+1)

Oil 223 (47 Production)

194 Oil (Used 29)

Mostly reorganising, rebuilding and upgrading.

Small attack near Moscow knocks a GAR down to 3 Steps costing 4 Steps for our units so arguably a waste of resources.

A German corps arrives in Finland, will probably need more to rescue the isolated Finnish forces. Small advances around Rostov area.

Turn 43 - 19th December 1941 Mud/Winter

Production

Germany - 136
Italy - 27

Total - 163 (-4)

Finland surrenders after getting most of its units surrounded without supplies, not the greatest idea to advance East.

German BB is lost that was in the Finnish port awaiting repairs and the corps that was sent to help Finland has to be recalled.

193 Oil left now.

Still losing oil need to stop moving units for a turn or two.

Voronezh should fall next turn and starting to surround Rostov.

Turn 44 - 8th January 1942 Winter/Severe

Production

Germany - 137
Italy - 27

Total - 164 (+1)

Starting - 223 Oil

US joins the war.

Things getting sticky now the Winter has worsened, general offensives halted as we strengthen the front line ready for a new push once Spring returns.

Oil is getting a bit desperate though, may need to concentrate on heading for the oil initially in Spring.

163 Oil at end.

Turn 45 - 28th Jan 1942 - Mud/Severe

Production

Germany - 137
Italy - 26

Total -163 (-1)

A German Corps is now cut off in the North, elsewhere we manage to hold the line fairly well but PPs are being spent on upgrades and replacing losses rather than building new units. The line is too thin in places and gaps are starting to appear.

End - 141 Oil - still losing oil!

Turn 46 - 17th February 1942 - Fair/Winter

Production

Germany - 138

Turn 47 - 9th March 1942 - Fair/Snow

Production

Germany - 138
Italy - 27

Total - 165 (+1)

Overlord? We manage to damage 3 transports in the Atlantic as a large enemy flotilla approaches the UK.

Image

Manstein injured as his unit is destroyed, losing too many units on the Eastern front and PPs being spent on replacing losses.

150 > 124 Oil still losing it but this turn at last usage was less than production.

Turn 48 - 29th March 1942 - Fair / Severe Winter

Production

Germany - 139
Italy - 27

Total - 166 (+1)

We need the winter to end soon as the Eastern front is crumbling, Russians starting to isolate my forces which are too thin on the ground.

Image

Image

105 Oil remaining.

Turn 49 - 18th April 1942 - Fair / Mud

Production

Germany - 139
Italy - 29

Total 168 (+2)

We actually managed to end the turn with more oil than last turn, but supplies are still pitiful.

The Eastern front is deteriorating into a disaster with not enough units to hold a coherent line. Summer needs to come fast and even then it's probably a lost cause.

Image

Overlord also looks likely any time now and with just 3 SUBs to help defend the coasts it won't be hard for the Allies to get a beach head.

US SUB spotted in the Med, is an invasion of Italy imminent too?

Oil 123 (at end)

Turn 50 - 8th May 1942 - Fair

Production

Germany - 135
Italy - 29

Total - 164 (-4)

Large allied fleet heading for the Med, I am blocking the straights with 2 Italian SUBS but they will easily overwhelm what we can muster.

All available air forces from Western Europe (not much, just 3 units) are diverted to Northern Italy with 3 GAR units.

In the East Rundstedt is assigned command of the South now as armour is transferred south for Case Blue. It will take a couple of weeks to move all armour required to his command before we can strike in this theatre.

With oil so low it is critical that oil is captured before winter hits again and so Runsdtedt is tasked with driving as far as he can by the end of September and will now be given priority with reinforcements etc.

Rommel commands the centre and has a reasonable force under his command but there are some gaps in the front near Kursk and Moscow that need filling.

With Manstein injured until June Hoth is commandeered and will arrive to take command of the Northern flank shortly. The Northern flank is most threadbare and will need at least half a dozen units to shore things up.

Vitebsk is recaptured and the front is now generally stabilised although it will take a few more weeks of replacements before we can go on a general offensive in the East.

Oil now critically low at just 88, barely enough to sustain attacks much past July unless we restrict air and naval movement.

Turn 51 - 28th May 1942 - Fair

Production

Germany - 139
Italy - 29

Total - 168 (+4)

Oil 125

Rundstedt crosses the Don but we've only been able to send an additional armoured unit so far as all other forces are committed around Moscow.

Image

Hoth arrives to stablise things around Vitebsk and with the addition of the 1st SS Panzergrenadiercorps, newly refitted he can begin to go on the offensive soon hopefully.

Around Moscow Rommel has allowed 3 units to be surrounded, all units are committed to extricating these forces and whilst we wipe out 2 enemy MEC units there is still a chance at least 2 German units, a Corps and ARM will not be able to escape fully.

Image

Simply far too many Russian units around now, again all PPs used to strengthen damaged units.

In the Med a British BB is seen exiting the straights of Gibraltar and he will run into our two Italian SUBs next time around.

Italy has been reinforced with a motley selection of GAR and Corps from mainly the minor Axis powers.

Oil 76 at end of turn.

Turn 52 - 17 June 1942 - Fair Weather

Production

Germany - 137
Italy - 29

Total - 166 (-2)

Oil 121

Slow progress in the North but Rommel seems to have stabilised things around Moscow and extricated the XIV Panzerkorps for the loss of a Corps.

Image

The Northern flank may now be under control but at the risk of weakening the centre. We still haven't been able to send as much as hoped south to help Rundstedts drive on the Caucuses but he has progressed quite well with just 2 Armoured units and a Mec, but a trap is looking likely as he simply lacks enough units to take the objective whilst holding his flanks.

We will need to clear Rostov of defenders to help reduce this risk and that will take time, but perhaps next time we can send another unit or two to support.

Oil 59 - we seem to be using so little oil as our forces dry up that we will be OK for the rest of the year but will have to continue being careful.

In the Med the US find the Italian SUBS, they pull back for one more attempt to slow the inexorable advance of the US forces.

We have quite a few units in Italy but until we can work out where the invasion will land we cannot fully commit the defenders. A total of 17 defensive units are in Italy but mainly weak GAR units with just a couple of Corps.

Turn 53 - 7th July 1942 - Fair

Production

Germany - 125
Italy - 29

Oil 98

The fighting around Rostov and Moscow is desperate again as the Germans maintain some kind of momentum in the south for heavy losses.

Rundstedt has now been reinforced so he commands 3 Panzer units including an SS unit and another SS Mec, with the XXII Panzer not far to the North if required. However, some of these units are barely at half strength.

Image

Around Moscow Rommel is still struggling to extricate his forces from the Soviet encirclment but the Russians are looking a little short of men if they want to try it again, but the experience XIV Panzer may be lost.

Image

In the Med the US has a large invasion fleet closing in on Tunis, it looks like they intend landing in Southern Italy or Sicily. The Italian navy cannot do much about it but will try to inflict casualties where possible. More units arrive in Italy to bolster the defence.

Badoglio is commanding the defence of Rome with the 9th Corpo MEC, in total there are now 18 units on the Italian mainland plus 3 air units.
