I keep forgetting this

Post by ncc1701e » Thu Mar 03, 2016 6:26 pm

I have search in all the Grand Strategy manual and I fail to find the key that is allowing the strategy bomber to attack an unit like a tactical bomber (when a ressource is in the same hex). Would you mind recall me the correct key?

If I am not mistaken, this is not in any manual.

Thanks in advance

X is the hotkey. Probably was added after latest version of manual was made, so its not there.

This is it, thank you !

I remember having discovered this possibility in one AAR but was not finding it yesterday.
This is not something I indeed use intensively but sometimes it helps. :)

Come Overlord and you will want that hotkey! The effect of a large strategic bomber force softening up all of the Axis player's fighting reserves is grand.

Just got the game last week and after several tries I was able to get Warsaw in two turns. Yay !

After that I continued on and I'm now trying to get Malta. It looks like I can't use an amphibious assault [maybe I'm doing something wrong]. I found the Malta section in the manual and am trying that. The German Fighters can only attack the Malta airbase once instead of twice, while the Brit fighter can hit the German units twice. I've looked around for why this could be but have found no explanation. Can any one help ?

And hello to my friend ncc1701e !

And thanks to everyone who worked on the GS Manual and those that post advise here. Now we need to get some beginner videos made. Watching is way more fun than reading !

How RAF fighter can hit twice? No single unit in the game can attack more than once per turn.

If you want to land 2 hits on British fighter per turn do the following:
1. Attack Malta hex with any air unit. One of your fighters will escort and fighter vs fighter combat will occur. (this will not work if British fighter is in sentry mode and does not intercept, but I guess you play AI - AI never uses it)
2. Attack British fighter directly with another fighter.

Oh right. Well, I didn't pay close enough attention, I just saw the German unit getting hit twice. Maybe the Brits had a carrier nearby ?

The issue is that the Brit fighter can't be hit twice. Yes, if he interdicts then it can happen, otherwise not. I mean, the two German fighters should be able to get two separate attacks on the Brit fighter, yes ?

Welcome!

The rule sPzAbt653 is that a hex with an air unit in it can only be struck once. You could shore bombard the fighter as well but then you are starting to use up a lot of oil. Malta is a tricky one to take and the game abstracts the island and its role but in all strategic games you will have a few spots where things are a bit glossed over!

I have only taken it once I think and that was because the allied player got too cute by half and in an effort to hold Tunisia (I rejected the armistice) he pulled the ground unit out and was unaware I had a German airborne within range.

Clear as mud?

AHAH ! I didn't come across that anywhere, so thank you very much !

I did pull up the entire Italian navy and bombed the heck out of the airbase for several turns, but I only incurred one step loss while suffering several, so I eventually retired from the attempt.

Abstracted, yes. Malta probably should not be in supply once Gibraltar, Alexandria, or any other source of possible resupply is Axis controlled. Gibraltar was also dependent on its water from Spain, so Gibraltar would not remain supplied once the water was cut by the Axis [as long as the Luftwaffe were around to discourage the RN from attempting supply runs]. But that would all make it too easy on the Axis, maybe. I also noticed that in N. Africa the Italians seem to be missing three corps that were in Libya [22, 23 and Corpo Libia] while the British have all three of theirs [10, 13 and 30]. But as a scenario creator for another game, I know that the balance in Africa is difficult to deal with. And of course, I am just starting to learn this one, in hopes that I can mostly retire AH's 3R and Three-Sixty's High Command from my play list.

Thanks again for the intel guys !

The only struck once rule becomes important in terms of strategic bombing as the Axis player will place a fighter in a synth oil hex to ensure that it cannot be ground down as much for example. So even if you cannot see into the hex and bomb it hereby exposing the air unit, you cannot attack the air unit... except... if it then goes on to intercept and you can counter-intercept (or leave it to your SACto fight). You still don't get to hit the hex a second time but can damage the fighter... unless it is on sentry in which case it won't intercept.

so many "excepts" and unlesses"!

You used to play A3R? cool. I was on Brice Harper's design team for the Rising Sun and A World at War expansions to 3R.

ciao

That had to be some real fun, those were simpler times !

Does anybody know if a hardcopy of the manual is available ?

Yeah it was. He was the one who designed 3R into A3R. We would play and test all weekend for months on end... even went to AvalonCon and there is was maybe about six hours of sleep each night for three/four days. It was fun; I think. haha

No, re the manual... I believe it is only a download.

Actually if a FTR is on Sentry, it will intercept any air unit that attacks the hex it is in. Sentry means it will not attack outside the hex it is in.

To All,

Send me a message and I can make the manual available to you. If any one wants to host the manuals on the web - I will be glad to have you do it. I no longer wanted to pay website fees.

Alec, are these manuals that you have any better than the ones that ship with the game ? I've had it for two weeks and am very frustrated, finding many things is difficult and some things are impossible/not found. The Strategies are nice but should be separate. The code lines are not for beginners and should also be separate. A lot of the stuff is so outdated its embarrassing. 'Stylus' instead of 'mouse' ? Really ??

The game looks nice and plays well, I'd have gladly paid a little more to have a better manual. Again, Alec, if yours are different I would be happy to host them on my website, but if they are the same, I would not.

Yup - as Duncan stated - much much better :-)
