For details on each period see the UKGE website or the BHGS Challenge pages on the BHGS site

The BHGS Challenge is one of the UK's longest-running multi-ruleset competitions, with the first edition having taken place back in 2002. Each year up to 200 gamers regularly take part, playing rulesets covering all eras of historical gaming.

The BHGS was set up in the 1990's to promote historical tabletop wargaming. Our main role is to organise a number of multi-ruleset wargaming tournaments across the UK each year, including now The BHGS Challenge@UKGE.

This colocation with UKGE is a great opportunity to promote and grow the hobby of histocial gaming by exposing it to thousands of other gamers at the UK's biggest and busiest gaming event. All types of gaming are growing rapidly in popularity, and so to have the opportunity to be part of an event with thousands of other gamers gives us all a wonderful platform to promote historical gaming to the widest possible audience

Richard Denning of UKGE commented – “We at Expo aim to promote tabletop gaming in all its forms. Historical Wargaming is one of the ancestors of all forms of tabletop gaming having led the way thanks to pioneers like HG Wells in the early 20th century and giants like Donald Featherstone in the 1960’s and 70s. Fantasy and SciFi wargaming, roleplaying and many forms of board games owe their very existence to the earlier historical gamers. As such it is great to add in these tournaments to those on offer.”

I might have missed a bit...

"All Competitions are priced at £16 for 2-day events, and £8 for 1-day events but you will also need to buy a UKGE pass for the days you are planning on attending as well. These are £22 for two days, with other options (3 days, family entry etc) also available for those of you who want to take part in some of the other UKGE events.

Ticketing is being handled by the UKGE team, and so if you have a query about ticketing please contact them via their Ticketing FAQ page , as we will be unable to help with any queries relating to tickets"

Okay - thanks Tim. I thought £16 was looking good but £38 for 4 games is twice the price of Roll Call? Other than admission is there anything else included within the price?

The price is a couple of pounds more than Challenge has been for the past 5 years or so, so it's more that Roll Call is very cheap and Challenge hasn't had a price rise in a while anyway.

There is also a huge amount going on at UKGE in terms of events and a massive gaming trade show, all of which you have access to as well, including the opportunity to play additional social games in the venue as late as you wish on Saturday night.

We'll review the "4 games vs 5" option after this year again, but for our first time in the venue we thought it best to go with a later start and a shorter overall running time this year for all of the "3.5 hour" games to give players the chance to prove that the travel and parking will be as easy for us Wargamers to successfully navigate as they are for the 12,500 board gamers who go every year!

That and the fact none of us seem to be getting any younger ....!!

Fwiw across all the gaming systems we cover, the "3.5 hour" format is also becoming increasingly atypical, with ADLG, Bolt Action, Saga and (apparently the intention also is for) MeG to run more, shorter games in a weekend - at Roll Call next year for example only around 1/3 of the players will still be on the "4x3.5 hour" schedule.

And who knows, maybe next year FoG v3 will mean 2.5 hour games are the norm for too FoG anyway?

This is a question for Mr Ruddock. If The Challenge has been reduced to 4 games, does that mean its value in calculating the overall rankings will be reduced to the same value as Rollcall?

No. The main reason for the challenge and Britcon being "premium" events is because there are no pools. Historically both warfare and roll call have had numerous pools.

I'm not changing mid-year, but I'll review after Britcon if either of those comps is a single pool.

I've not released any rankings for ages, but will do so imminently. Can't get the Scottish open or derby results :(

In just three months time the NEC Birmingham will be full of workers setting up for 2017's biggest gaming event - UK Games Expo, including for the very first time The BHGS Challenge!

Each and every BHGS Challenge entrant this year will have the opportunity to take part not only in their chosen competition, but also dive into in a veritable festival of gaming with every part of the hobby represented under one roof:

Alongside the Challenge at UKGE will be Card Games, Boardgames, Role-playing Games and Family Games along with a massive 100+ exhibitor trade show, participation and demo games, star guests, authors and artists, seminars and talks as well as plenty of space and facilities for 24-hour gaming onsite at the NEC!

It's going to be the biggest ever event for the UK gaming community - make sure you are a part of it by playing at this year's BHGS Challenge at UK Games Expo!

The NEC, and the Birmingham area generally has a huge range of transport and hotel options in easy reach, so we have compiled the following advice from the UKGE team about how best to plan your accommodation near to the NEC for the event so you can get the best deal possible.

If you do really want to stay onsite at the NEC, UKGE have agreements with a number of the hotels at the NEC, which include 24 hour gaming space for use by those staying there - but as 'onsite' hotels these are both very popular, and are priced accordingly a 'premium' offering. If you do want to stay onsite the deals on offer are with the 4 closest. To find out more about those deals follow this link : http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/accomodation.php

Outside the NEC campus there are also huge numbers of hotel rooms in a short travel distance, and with road, rail and taxi/Uber there are plenty of options at much better prices in nearby towns as well.

Some of the ideas you may want to consider are as follows:
Trains run from the NEC station (Birmingham International) into the middle of Birmingham (New Street) until 1.29am on Saturday night, and to Coventry until 23.30pm. With plenty of budget hotels and with both routes only taking less than 20 minutes, having a few beers at the Challenge, hopping on the train and then having a night out in either city centre is actually a very viable proposition.
The town of Solihull is just 4 miles away and has a great range of pubs and restaurants - and hotels are much cheaper than those onsite at the NEC. Whether you go by taxi and/or car, this is another good option (and probably what the organising team will be doing!).
Warwick, Kenilworth and Leamington are all only 20 mins away by car - pretty much the same time it takes from Cranfield if you stay in Milton Keynes for Roll Call. If you bolt on a day to your trip you could even take in Warwick or Kenilworth Castle?

There are plenty of hotel booking sites to use to search the best deals, however the UKGE team have also set up a "not on campus at the NEC" hotels page with some other suggestions which you can access via this link. http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/alternativehotels.php

As you can see, there are plenty of options to consider - hopefully we have given you some ideas to help with your planning. However, the most important bit of advice the UKGE team have given us is to just "Get on with it!!" - so even though it may seem a long way off, we recommend booking your hotels sooner rather than later!

(PS - I'm staying in Solihill, and I know of a few folks who are doing the "train into New St" option as well. Expedia has places available starting at under £40/night at the moment all within striking distance of the NEC)

I lived in Solihull for several years and can recommend it. Also has one of the best curry houses I've ever been to.

23 signed up as of today, and usually a bit of a flurry is seen post-Roll Call so we may well be on track to beat last years total of 30 entries!
