After some "tutorial" campaigns, i started one tough campaign (level IV) with Gauls (Senoni) Vs Liguri
first open battle went really well and now i have to decide to pursuit or to march at a normal pace

Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
Be careful about the pursuit option. I got whooped badly doing that when my small force was overrun. My Italian troops become roadkill in barely a minute of action.
Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
Thanks i think i would lead my Senoni at normal pace considering they are far better than Liguri in a normal open battle

What happened? Why did you lose so badly? What kind of units were you using?

Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
That Greek army looks considerably cheaper than the opposing Pyrrhic army. What difficulty are you playing on?
Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
I am playing level 3, battle was very small and I lost mainly due bad handling agains phalanx (it tends to advance after melee so uncovering flanks and rear , I did not exploit very well) and other greek infantry is not so good as Epirus one
Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
Did you charge using your Phalanx units as if so I think that increases chance they will follow up if unit is pushed back by them. Don't think that happens if they were defending v charge......
Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
Oh no i was against a phalanx with theurhoporoi
Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
After the sounding defeat against Epirus i tried a 5 battles, level 3 progressive campaign of Macedon Vs Greek league.
I won rather easily, excpet i had some bad moments in the very first battle. Battles were 1: open; 2: open; 3:open; 4: baggage escort; 5: open.
Here is the final unit lists.
And now i am asking you, which campaign i will try next?
Gauls Vs Romans?
Romans Vs Greek western?
Samnites Vs Romans?

Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
New Sandobx Campaign, Level IV, 7 battles Progressive.
Horse Germanic tribes migration Vs The Romans
1st "Limes clash" was a piece of cake, my goths smashed the unskilled roman legion.
We managed to migrate trhough forests and deserts until we met an arabic tribe and we decided to pay tribute to them to continue fighting the romans, from the steppes, to the desert and towards the Danube ... eager to fight the 2nd battle.
By now the already excellent narrative feeling is even better with the last update. Thanks FOG2

Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
On the danube my goths turned against the romans but we lost; we reformed and battle a rearguard action (new sandbox campaign feature - play another battle even if one is lost) but the romans held the terrain and we routed.
The head of Chlodowig son of Vulmar is now on some roman pilum.
Campaing verdict: Romans limitaneii and auxilia palatina are really strong, cataphractoi are a good challenge to goths cavalry. I managed really bad my noble cavalry charging infantry in front à la "Montjoie St.Denis!!" sort of... infantry held my horses and slaughtered my men.
---
Next campaign?
Maybe Romans (Marian reform) Vs Ptolemaic ?

Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
Indeed, the next campaign is Romans vs samnites (a classic). Here the new update shines!!
Level 3 progressive 5 battles
1st a skirmish between romans and samnites with a tough win for romans
2nd the Senate inform me that gauls are closing to help my enemy, but their armies are divided, so opting for a central position I attack the samnites, winning.
3rd the samnites call for a truce, but latins are moving against Rome so the Senate recall me. I close with latin army and, thanks to lucanian allies I manage to win the day.
4th samnites are hard to die, they break the truce and attack my army, I am outmatched but I win ... with heavy losses
5th.... and now the final battle.....
This last update is awesome

Do you find level 4 buffs units fighting quality? I played Maranga as the Sassanids, and cataphracts had difficulty charging the front of Roman MI auxilia. When I played Tigranacerta on level 3 Armenian cataphracts could charge HI legions.

It doesn't.Delbruck wrote:Do you find level 4 buffs units fighting quality?
This is because the early Roman legions are on +100 POA for impact foot when charged by cataphracts, the late Romans are on +166 POA. (100 for light spear and 66 for darts vs cataphracts).I played Maranga as the Sassanids, and cataphracts had difficulty charging the front of Roman MI auxilia. 5th: The final clash. Proconsul Ulpius Gordianus lead the veteran hastati and the lucanian allies in a mountain pass to ouflank the Samnites, the roman approach is well managed but the samnites are really hard to fight. The Romans manage to wheel the samnites left and press them to the mountains and to the rough hills, but the legion lost momentum and Ulpis Gordianus is surrounded and killed leading his men.
The battle is over, nor the romans nor the samnites can claim the field. The Roman legion come back to the Urbe with lucanian allies to protect the rear, samnites won't pursuit.
The campaign end in a standoff, but Ulpius Gordianus Proconsul did well in winning the samnites in the first clashes, and destroying a big latin army, his name will shine for many years in the "Rei Publicae Annales".
If you are in Rome in the Capitolini Museum search for Ulpius Gordianus, you might find something about his glory and his death leading the roman legion.

Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
A new Campaign unfolds:
Roman British Vs Anglo Saxon (thanks to Osprey publishing Arthur and the Anglo Saxon wars)
Level III , Progressive, 7 battles.
1st and 2nd battle against Anglo Saxons (and some hill tribes) won thanks to the Roman British cavalry, my infantry is really weak, but Saxons have no cavalry so i won thanks to mobility and flank/rear engagements.
Now 3rd battle.... an unkown enemy is approaching i might fight with my echelon force or with my army.... unkown enemy... must be Mordred i suppose

Re: Adraeth's little FOG2 page
Nowadays i am playing a campaign Romans Vs Romans on the 100 AD, it is interesting that sometimes the engine bring me other army lists (not romans) and i like it very much.
Anyway i was thinking, does this apply even to other army list in the period for the roman one?
I mean if i start a sandbox campaign with Romans vs Syria in the 100 AD, might be possible that a Roman army will fight mine during the campaign? simulating a "sort of" war to become the new Caesar?
