Me.109E vs. 109F

Post by ptje63 »

Im a bit discouraged while travelling through Russia in January 1945, so decided to have a third go at Afrika, Manstein level.
My strategy regarding Italian units, is to exchange for German units, as soon as prestige permits, in order to have them gain experience (and heroes) as soon as possible, while maintaining a healthy level of experienced/in-experienced units. Also due to the fact that Italian units (understandable) cannot be upgraded to German units.
Im having trouble if I should spend 40 precious prestige to upgrade the Me.109E to F: does the 7 vs. 11 initiative and 18 vs. 19 air defense weigh up to a drop of 14 vs. 12 air attack? Asides from the +1 movement and +12 fuel...
Current unit only scratches surface of British Beaufighter |-).

With the higher initiative, the F will fire first. Should not take as much damage in Ftr vs Ftr combat.
The E should be somewhat better against bombers

The extra gas and ability to be out in the field for longer periods of time does it for me

Agreed. The extra 12 units of fuel is about another turn in the air. With the remote airfields in the AK scenarios, this can be important.

For me, the extra fuel of the F is most important in AK, then the inititive.
The E is slightly better on defensive fire because initiative doesn't matter for this and against very low initiative bombers and biplane fighters but that's about it.

The Fritz, even with the less attack power, is more valuable in the long run than the Emil due to the better range and initiative. Hell, it's arguably at least on an even keel with the early Gustavs. Ultimately though, I stay with the Gustav because the Spitfires, La-5s, and Yak9s become mighty tough if you don't have any or minimal Fw-190s.

Personally, i think Spitfire MkV is modeled quite underwhelmingly.. it was superior to all german fighters up till FW-190A appeared.. yet you have literally no problems facing these..
