The Syrian War help (ps2)
Great game. I love strategy and I'm happy that i found one for ps2, but here is my question:
I'm stuck at syarian war these elephants are driving me nuts, here is my army:
militia X3 (around 10 to 12 level)
light infantry X2 (4,5 level)
heavy chavlary X6 (around 14 to 15 level)
light chavlary X3 (17,15,15 level)
velties X2 (both 10 level)
principe X2 (around 11, 10 level)
triarri X1 (12 level i think)
auxulary chavlary X1 (3 level)
Please help, I now that I can use scrub aginst elephants but there is too little space for whole army
and if i send whole army on theirs left flank and part of middle and leave my light troops in scrub,
the elephants just go to the bunch in the left and middle flank and don't want to attack those light troops
in scrub (i think its bushes) please help
My army doesn't have any upgraded equipment.
please can you give me some help detailed
Thanks

You got this far without upgrading your equipment! Bizarre. Are you expecting to take the denarii with you? Be a Caesar, not a Crassus.
Yes, upgrading your equipment will help a great deal. There are diminishing returns starting about Level 4, (Level 2 for Helmets), and you shouldn't invest in armour for skirmishers, for example, but otherwiswe you really have nothing better to send it on than troops,, and those are limited to 20.
If you cleverly line up your heavies against the back wall on the right-hand side, you can significantly delay when Antiochus's archers start firing. Use a cavalry unit to kill Antiochus himslef before he messes with your infantry line, then withdraw them somewhere. As soon as most of Antiochus' heavies are dealt with, unveil your cavalry against A's archers, and begin the roll-up of his line.

My biggest worry are elephants on right flank. On the left flank are those light troops I can beat them in no time. Now I can defeat the elephants and whole right flank but I have too many losses. I can't beat right flank with light troops.
Also I have another profile where I'm little farther from here. I'm on some mission where i must limit my losses and win in
certain amount of time. It goes somehow like this "your scouts have fail you badly". Field is mostly covered with woods.
If I fight in the woods i lose couse i have many heavy troops and heavy chavlary. So my tactic is to wait them in the open with my heavy troops, and send my light troops on the left flank where is forest. Also i take one squad of heavy chavlary on left flank. With that I can deafeat those skirmishers that are still in the open and loosen up some for those light troops.
And I'm in the good position except I don't have enough time to defeat all of them.
My army is somehow like this
Mostly heavy chavlary around 16th level
4-5 heavy infantry around level 11
2 militia level 12
1 skirmishers level 14
2 auxulia level 0
and ofcourse leader level 17 i THINK
I didn't played this profile for a while but I'll be back with correct data after I play it
(And this army doesn't have any equipment upgraded )

Your army is too heavy on cavalry, and has insufficient light troops, particularly missilers. My army builds up as follows, with most troops after the Spearmen built at the first possible opportunity, except the principes are bought over a few turns:
Legate
Militia 1
Skirm 1
Scout 1
Spearmen
Militia 2
Skirm 2
Scout 2
Nobles 1
Hastati
Velites 1 & 2
Principe 1 & 2
Principe 3 (or Triari)
Auxilia 1 & 2
Aux Cav
Archers 1 & 2
at Magnesia (against Antiochus), I keep everything not being used to defeat Antiochus's left wing hidden in or behind the woods initially. One cav unit is used to kill Antiochus when he charges out, and then dusks behind the forest also. My heaviy inf., archers, legate, and velites are lined up against the back wall to keep A's archers idle as long as possible. When A's 2nd wave of infantry moves out, I swing my cavalry out to the right and into his archers, behind his 2nd wave of infantry. Once I have defeated hisleft wing, I start swinging around against his right wing and laucnh my light infantry in the woods as the anvil against which the hammer of my right wing 'smotes him'.
The rebalancing of your force, and the use of equipment upgrades, will help in the other battle also.

In that battle you fight in the forest but i tried that and didn't worked probably couse, as you said I have too many cavlary
units. So, I'm thinking about making new profile.
I need tips about what do i buy in first militias, scouts, or do I save money for something else. Should I buy skirmishers or I wait for archers.

My buy order is in the previous post. In addition, I occasionally buy a couple or three peasants as pin cushions, but only for one or two battles at a time. The only key buys early on are Spearmen 1 and Nobles 1, which must be done at the earliest possible moment to get by Hernici Farmers and then Men In Black.
In GBOR you don't get archers for a long time; you will definitely need missilers before then. As stated above, I get 2 skirms and 2 velites. For a total of 600 denari, plus another 140 or so for upgrades, this is a very sound investment.

Not one cavalry unit, four. By mid-campaign when my army is complete I have 2 Scouts, 1 Nobles, and one Aux. Cav. Early on I experimented with discarding superceded units and replacing them with the newer unit types, but the experience loss was (in general) too valuable.
So my final army composition is:
Legate
Cavalry * 4 (Scout *2, Nobles, Aux.Cav)
Missilers * 6 (Skirm *2, Velite*2, Archers*2)
Light Infantry*4 (Militia*2, Auxilia*2)
Heavy Infantry*5 (Spearmen, Hastati, Principe*3)
You will be pleasantly surprised how effective missilers are against even heavy infantry, particularly if you can maneuver them onto non-clear terrain.

Triari (and spearmen) are specialized anti-cavalry heavy infantry, not ideal for general-purpose use. Principes are the best bang-for-buck of all the heavy infantry types available to the Romans. I sometimes get one Triari instead of the third Principe, but that is all.

Compare the stats of a Triari at level 2 (cost = 900d) and a Block upgrade, with a Principe at level 2 with Armour-1, Weapons-1, Helmet-1 (cost = 800d) and a Swordmanship upgrade. The Principe is superior in every category except Trample Avoid and Morale. Only above about level 13, with equipment above level 4 available, will the Triari overtake the Principe.
The Triari is really an upgrade Spearman, not an upgraded Principe or Hastati. If you want an upgraded Principe you must go for the Legionary or Praetorian.
Remember that you will almost always deploy Triari (and Spearmen above level 6) in Disciplined-Offensive in order to get a decent Melee Attack number. This formation is particularly vulnerable to missilers, so you will want to get numerous Block and Missile Defence upgrades for them.

The 'Possum Method' advocates upgrading with Swordmanship-Drill-Feint in a cycle until Level 13, (inserting Disciplined Formations at level 6 of course). I usually modify this slightly as follows:
- for Militia I often substitute Protection from Infantry instead of Drill, and NEVER select Block;
- for Legate I select Quick Thinking once, and select Swordmanship and Anti-Infantry when ever available;
- for hoplites (ie Spearmen and Triari) I take Block when Swordmanship isn't available; and
- for Cavalry and missilers I take Drill religiously as I will re-point these troops type frequently during battles.
