Re: Live Draw for the Themed Event will be on Friday 25th January at 10am (UK time)

Post by stockwellpete »

Just a couple of hours to go before I make this draw. I will be sending a group PM to everyone early next week just outlining a few things that need to be done to make the group stages work properly. You will be playing three single matches against the other opponents in your pool. The paired game format will start in the knock-out phase when we get down to the last eight players. I hope everyone has already downloaded the three scenarios required for the first stage of this section - Soissons, Tolbiac and Vouille - if not can you please try and do so over the weekend so that any issues arising can be sorted out before next Friday (February 1st). It should all be very straightforward. Some players will use the Frankish players twice at the group stage, others will only use them once. It will be the two players with the lower ratings (or no ratings) in each group who will play with them twice.

A very interesting draw, I think. In Group 1 there are three players who are currently playing in the lower divisions, so at least one of them will reach the knock-out stage. Nosy_Rat, who is defending two successive wins in this section, is drawn in Group 2 which looks quite tough with both Nijis and IMC currently riding high in the ratings. Group 3 has a really "old veteran" feel about it with pantherboy, Triarii and hidde resuming old rivalries that pre-date both FOG1DL and FOG2DL completely and go right back to the early days of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (LOEG). And finally, Group 4 looks to be a very open contest, although schmolywar, the current leader in Slitherine's automated Xmas tournament, probably starts as the favourite to qualify.

 It is worse than that because I am afraid that I am going to have to ask you to make a fifth selection as all your four choices were taken! You were seeded number 1 in Division C so you were the last player to have their army allocated. You will need to choose an army from a nation that has not already been selected. I will post up the full army selections shortly.

Just a few statistics for you . . .

In Division A, 7 players got their first choice, 2 got their second choice, 1 got their third choice, 0 used their fourth choice and 0 was asked to make a fifth choice. We can show this as 7-2-1-0-0. For Division B the figures were 8-1-1-0-0; for Division C 7-1-0-1-1; and for Division D 9-1-0-0-0.

So overall, the figures for Classical Antiquity are 31-5-2-1-1, which tells me that the system has worked very well in this instance, with just under 80% of players receiving their first choice army.

It works superb, it does not even need fine tuning.

Totally agree. A very subtle and effective form of handicapping that still gives the strongest players in each Division almost always one of their preferred top 4 selections.

So overall, the figures for Late Antiquity are 30-7-0-2-1, which again tells me that the system has worked very well, with 75% of players receiving their first choice army and around 92% getting either their first or second choice army.
