Field of Glory 2 - "Allies" Feature Explained

Post by Daniele » Mon May 20, 2019 10:52 am

By popular demand, Update 1.5.12 adds a major new feature to the game – Allies.

It is now possible to choose to have allies from a different army list in SP and MP custom battle armies. The main army list provides the majority of the troops available for selection, the allies provide a smaller proportion.

The permitted allies for each list are based on known historical alliances. Hence some army lists can have as many as 12 possible allies, others may have none. Altogether, well over 400 allies are currently specified, which, together with the 281 single nation army lists, makes a total of more than 700 pure or mixed army lists in the game. This in turn means that, including “what if” games, the number of possible matchups is now over 500,000! And that is before unit selection.

For example, here we are setting up a custom battle representing an episode from the Third Samnite War (298-290 BC) in which an army of allied Samnites and Gauls meets a Roman army with Lucanian allies.

The army list previews show an asterisk in front of the allied units.

Here we can set up a situation similar to the battle of Clontarf in 1014 AD, in which an Irish army with Viking allies fights a Viking army with Irish allies:

Good job :) I think allies should have a different banner color.

I like that.

I agree with Mirek69. Banners must be different.

Allies are kind of rare and often unreliable. So will there be any uncertainty as to whether allies will be available even if historically they were allied at some point in time?

No, this system assumes that they have turned up. However, the list of potential allies is filtered by Geography and Date (unless the filters are turned off) so that the allies are plausible both against the chosen enemy army and their allies, if any.

Forgive my cluelessness, but maybe I'm overthinking this. The main article says "The permitted allies for each list are based on known historical alliances. Hence some army lists can have as many as 12 possible allies, others may have none". Is this limit of permitted possible allies only enforced if you have the "Date" and/or "Geographical" filters selected, or is it absolute? In other words, if I de-select the "Date" and "Geographical" filters, will I be able to select allies from any army list, or just that permitted zero to twelve?

I did see the reply posted just above by rbodleyscott mentioning "(unless the filters are turned off)" which I guess answers my question, but I just thought I'd ask for clarification.

Thanks for tolerating my confusion :D, but then my wife has been doing it for forty years

Only historically known allies are permitted, even if Date and Geography filters are turned off.
