Division D
MikeMarchant - Roman 105-25 BC beat uneducated (Jewish 163-111 BC) - 64/24
A whirlwhind of a scrap where the result really doesn't do uneducated justice.
It was a steady tromping advance by the legionaries in the centre until contact on a broad clear hill. The opening rounds looked bad for the Romans as the Jewish Zealots cut their way through a legioanry unit against the odds and the Roman right flank started to look under threat. On the left flank, the Romans accidentally advaned a cavalry force behind a hill, unseen by the enemy, and swept into the Jewish flank just in time. The pike units on the Roamn flank held out bravely but evetually crumbled at the flanking cavalry, supported by infantry, wrapped round. The Roman right fell to the Zealots and Jewsih cavalry but by then it was too late. On the final turn there was an almost complete collapse of the Jewish army and their general was captured and sent off into exile in a jelly bean grove on Crete, for a sweet retirment.
Great game, undeducated, a pleasure to play with you.
Best Wishes

Re: Tournament diary and news . . .
You may start your matches in Early Middle Ages now. bomber23 has withdrawn from Division C and I hope to announce a replacement shortly. There will be no Time Control at the 3-week stage in this section this season, but the second Time Control at the half-way stage (after 5 weeks), when players are required to have completed 3 matches, will still be in operation. So I would recommend players issue 2 or 3 challenges quite quickly now to make up for the week we have lost. Please don't leave it another week before you start playing matches in this section.

desertedfox - Egyptian 570-525 BC defeated General Shapur - Carthaginian 550-411 50 to 24.
Lucky the game ended when it did for me, as more points were in the offering for Shapur.

I have taken the liberty of assuming that Cunningcairns army is actually Vikings (Ireland) as the regular Viking 900-1049 list does not have Irish allies. Hopefully this is correct.

Division D
MikeMarchant (Roman 24-196 CE) beat uneducated (Jewish 64 BC-6 AD) 64/49
A realy brutal bruiser of a battle, this one, which could easily have gone either way.
The challenge for the Romans was the terrain. The centre of the field was dominated by large patches of rough ground and not an ideal dance floor for Roman legionaries when facing an army heavy with medium foot. So, the romans deployed the majority of their forces wide to the left flank, where the field was clear. Behind the centre of the field, on a hill, some auxiliaries sat watching, backed up by a little cavalry, and then behind the right side of the field, on another hill, a few more auxiliaires were watching, also backed up with a little cavalry.
The Jewish army crossed the field to meet the main Roman force, intent on a plan of divide and conquer, and the legions managed to turn their line to face just in time. The Jewish forces were packed with lights who, while irritating, offered little to the brawl that followed. It was back and forth as the initial success of the Romans on the open ground was lost as the fight pushed closer to the rough ground. It was then that the auxiliaries stationed behind the centre of the the field and to the right of the field were given orders to march to the sound of the Eagles.
The Roman legions, aided by auxiliaries in reserve manage to completely wrap the Jewish right flank, and then, in two waves, the other forces arrived on the Jewsih left flank. The Romans now had both flanks enveloped and soon after closed the circle.
On another day, on another field, against another opponent, this would have signalled the end of the battle, but the forces of ZIon fought like lions, and causalties were heavy on both sides. Brutal toe to toe melee, with the pendulum of advantage swinging back and forth, continued on and on as the Roman encircelement strangled tighter and tighter.
At the end of the day, the fanatical faith of the Jewish forces was insufficient to overcome the fury of Mars and Mithridates and they simply dissolved into pitiful bands of bloodied refugees, crying out that their god had abandoned them. And so, the Romans demosntrated the superiority of their religion - for when a god abandons them, there's always another waiting around the corner.
Epic battle, uneducated - 'The Battle of the rRoamd Quarter' as we've chosen to call it - excellently played. Bad luck, and I look forward to our next.
Best Wishes
Mike
