Division B
rbodleyscott (Franks + Vikings) defeated sunnyboy (Byzantines) 61:27
This despite being completely suckered in by sunnyboy's trap and having three units of Byzantine lancers emerge from the woods behind my engaged left flank and within charge range for the next turn.
Excellent tactical roleplaying by the devious Byzantines, but sadly their part-time troops were not up to the heavy fighting.

Division A
Sunnyboy (Phoenician 681-539 BC) beat hidde Urartian (681-585 BC) 41 - 9
After some initial manoeuvre fruitlessly seeking some perceived advantage the Phoenician advanced through the storm of Urartian arrows with only minimal disruption. As the opposing armies clashed large sections of the Urartian line crumbled. The brittle Urartian foot making the below average Phoenician spearmen look like supermen.
Thanks for the game Anders!

Division C
Geffalrus (Antigonids) defeats Sunnyboy (Jewish Revolt) 45-19 via an early rush and a lucky rally.
First to fight last season because we didn't know any better, this season we waited to face each other last because we knew it was gonna be rough. The Jewish Army is a scary list at the best of times, and I was not looking forward to dealing with Sunny's facility with medium foot in rough terrain. The field itself ended up being decently open with some large rough patches. The challenge as a Hellenistic army is balancing having enough units in total to match the sheer numbers of the Jewish list AND having something to deal with 10 or more archers AND having something sturdy enough to survive a frontal charge by Superior Impact Foot + General. Mass pike will most likely win the melee in the long run, but is expensive, completely useless in rough terrain, and loses Impact POA when taking loses from skirmishers. As such, I went with more skirmishers, all my light horse, and a large heavy horse contingent. A small, but elite force of pikes was accompanied by a collection of Thureos. Sunny, on the other hand, brought maximum zealots and just a ton of archers. Yikes.
At first, Sunny got the best of the shooting. I countered the only way I know how - with an all out cavalry charge. Light horse and heavies got good angles and pursuit rolls, resulting in a quick rout of a surprising number of archers. Overeager, some of the heavy cavalry wandered too close to the Zealot swarm and got dragged down or chased off the field. At the point, I realized that my cavalry was not in the healthiest of shape, my skirmishers were all scattered, and I didn't actually have a plan for dealing with 11 Zealots. Even worse, my infantry was split trying to score some quick points beating up some Irregular Foot, and some elite pikes and Thureos had to stand and receive Zealot charges with the promise of Zealot FLANK charges the following turn. It wasn't pretty. Sunny was catching up in score real fast. I made a second line of pikes and Thureos, said a few quick prayers, and prepared for a second helping of pain that the Zealots proceeded to do their best to deliver.
And then the match ended. Not because of any particular tactical brilliance on my part, but because I'd survived just long enough for my routed Veteran Pikes + General to rally. That plus the early lead I'd gained through my cavalry's brave charge was just enough to cross the 25% threshold. So that's it for me and Classical Division C this season. It was a pleasure to face familiar players like Morkin, Sunny, Karvon, and Lydianed again, as well as some new (to me) folks. And now, off to join devoncop's FoG: Empires multiplayer game..........
Final positions of the two armies.

Cunningcairn - Viking 900-1049 AD (Irish ally) beat GDod - Ghaznavid 962-1187 AD (Turkish 600 -1036 allies) by 29% to 9%
GDod did the honourable thing and surrendered saving his troops for the opening of his fast food restaurant chain. Thanks for a good game where the dice favoured me.

Re: Poll on player army choices restriction
Personally I like the paired challenges we get in the slitherine tournament, perhaps you can pick any army but have to play a paired match with your opponent's army?
