Random generated maps

Post by rebel1233 »

Hi, I just wanted to ask if there is some specific reason as to why the maps randomly generated for campaigns or skirmishes are so terribly unsuitable for large battles. They're covered in forests and rough ground with often very little flat terrain. But the bigger issue is that armies are forced to deploy in an awkward way, such as right behind a forest or with artillery beneath a hill. Surely in real life generals would choose more suitable terrain for their battles, and surely they wouldn't start the battle in such an awkward position, considering this is a pitched battle and not an ambush.

Thanks

I suppose the short answer is for variety. It would not be a very interesting game if the battlefields were all wide open plains.

Because of the relatively loose formations used, most of the infantry in the game are not seriously inconvenienced by rough terrain, only by Forests, Mountains etc.

Where the terrain constrains the action, you can form up between the pieces of terrain, or go round them. The map is just a map of the local terrain - it isn't the battlefield. The battlefield is where the combat finally takes place, which is usually only part of the map.

Battle maps in history books usually depict the situation after the army had manoeuvred into battle positions. In the game, the last part of such manoeuvres can take place on the game map.
