Need some book advices

Field of Glory II is a turn-based tactical game set during the Rise of Rome from 280 BC to 25 BC.

Need some book advices

Post by ShahMat »

I have to say that my library is rather empty about Ancient Warfare, at the moment I only own the following books:

Roman Warfare by Adrian Goldsworthy
The Peloponnesian War 431–404 BC by Philip de Souza
Byzantium at War by John Haldon

Do you have other suggestions? I am interested in all topics but not fiction.

Greek Warfare: Myths and Realities by Hans van Wees. I don't necessarily agree with every conclusion he comes to, but it's a refreshing look at the topic.

And of course you can't go wrong with Thucydides.

Thanks to all!

Lot of suggestions, some books are hard to find (in Italy) or too expensive (I prefer the old paper), at the moment my basket includes:

The Art of War in the Western World di Archer Jones
Legion Versus Phalanx: The Epic Struggle for Infantry Supremacy in the Ancient World di Myke Cole
Warfare in the Ancient World di Brian Todd Carey

Good picks. Personally I'd read Brian Todd Carey's Warfare in the Ancient World first as it will provide a good overview and basis for more specific books like the Legion Versus Phalanx.

I recommend to read Roman military manuals by Vegetius, Maurice, Nikephoros Phokas II and Leo VI. Plus the works by ancient historians or chroniclers.

Thank you guys for your suggestions.

Btw, what about the Osprey series books? Usually they are good but I don't have any for this age.

Nothing wrong about them. But they are always specialized on a single narrow topic.
You would have to invest some nice sum, just to have all about some broad subject like Rome, Greek, Carthage etc.

I suggest to buy the DVD with Slingshot back issues from 1965-2015 instead:
-> http://www.soa.org.uk/joomla/slingshot-back-issues

This will give you stuff to read for years.

If you join the Society of Ancients you get 6x latest issue of Slingshot for £27. Then you have to renew your memebership for the next six. And so on.

Osprey does have a sale going on through end of May. 45% off ebooks, 30% off print books and 20% off games on it appears almost everything. They do have some pretty interesting books on both medieval and ancients and the sale makes them a bit more affordable.

Given that I prefer the books, 30% off is a good deal!
Legion Versus Phalanx was already on my list, thinking about the Campaign and Combat series.
